I’ve owned a gsxr 600 and a Honda RC51 and even though those bikes were STUPID fast, the r3 is my absolute favorite and I would choose it any day out of the 3. As someone who lives in Europe and has a r125. Even an r125 with a whopping 15hp it's enough to keep up with traffic. Cruises at 70-75 top out at 80-85, if anyone isn't convinced an R3 isn't enough for longer journeys and highways then you probably don't have enough experience to jump on a bigger bike in the first place.

I commuted via Ninja 250 for most of two years (barring bad weather), racking up about 10,000 miles quickly. The old Ninja 250 isn't especially fast, but could easily reach 100mph. It was also quicker than most cars on the streets from 0-60. It never, ever felt underpowered. They redesigned the Ninja 250 around 2009ish, and that redesigned bike was significantly slower. Although I personally have never ridden it, I suspect that I would find it underwhelming. I've also ridden the Yamaha R3, and I currently ride a CBR 250. The R3 has a fair chunk more power and torque than my old 250 had, and felt far more like a mid-sized bike (definitely not a full 600 supersport, but more like a generic 500-600 cc regular sportbikes) in performance. It was also incredibly comfortable to ride down gently winding roads, just so lithe and nimble. The CBR 250, on the other hand, definitely feels like it's somewhat lacking in torque and power. A 250 cc single should never have been made. Aside from the noticeable lack of power, though, the bike is lovely, once again a lightweight, comfortable bike to ride on winding mountain roads.

I don't even know why people are talking about how fast the bike can go, when majority of the time you won't even be doing those speeds. I own a 2019 R3 and I've done less than 10 top speed attempts because its honestly just silly if your mentality of buying a bike is supported on just its speed alone. I've done over 13,000 kms on the bike and I've kept up with 1000cc bikes on the Twisties. If you have never ridden a bike before, I strongly suggest staying away from 600cc bikes because YOU will be immature towards its power output. Stay on a 300-400cc bike for around a year or so. Until you can ride the bike's maximum potential, don't upgrade. And one last thing, I can see that majority of roads in the US are straight and I understand twisty roads can be far away, which makes small bikes boring. Just buy a 300, who cares what others say. Ride your own ride

I see you are a judgement person. About your question, maybe u should learn why some people love peak performance. I assume you like comfortable motorcycles, that's why you chose r3. When you have r3 and hear someone talking about speed. Your pride hurts cuz you know r3 is not the fastest bike between 300-450 cc (with similar price). When someone talks about how good r3 is at some point (not speed) that boosts your ego and wants to judge (silly) to someone that talks about speed on r3. There is feeling good when what you spend is worth the cost whenever you need or want. Why not switch to r15m if speed is not what you want?! R15m probably increases your chances to reach top speed, good features, good design. You can boost your ego with that bike. 😂

The r3 is more than capable on the highway. If you feel like it is not then you are not keeping the bike in the powerband. The powerband lies in the 7-10k rpm range. If you let it drop below that then yes it is going to feel sluggish if you try and give it acceleration without accommodating with a downshift. So if you struggle with not knowing what gear to be in without needing to actively be looking at what gear you are in then yes you will feel like it struggles on the highway. Otherwise if you learn to get a feel for it you will know as the bike will literally tell you when its slipping out the powerband and thats when you need to downshift. So no being in 4th gear at 4k rpm is not where this bike will be comfortable you are sacrificing so much torque that could be readily available if you keep your revs where they should be. And no keeping the bike in the high rpm range does not stress the engine at all that is how it is designed to run. The r3, r6 and r1 are all high revving engines and their powerbands reside very high in the rev range compared to any other sport bike. Every bike is different you need to learn where the powerband lies in whatever bike you are riding. I have 20k on the odo through 1.5 yrs of ownership, I weigh 165lbs and commute on the highway 35 miles one way and I stay going 80-95 mph for nearly 90% of the commute and reside around 8-9k rpm the whole way, so I still have plenty of torque available in 6th gear to reach 110 mph whenever i feel like it. Bike is totally fine
@justathinker86696 ай бұрын
Yeah you are right. Only thing I noticed on my R3 is that at ~100mph /150kmph the R3 is at ~11k rpm which really sucks the gas. At those speeds you can get like only 100-150 kms distance before the gas tank goes empty... 😂

I personally own a 2020 R3 and an 2019 XT250 down here in the mountains of western NC where just about everywhere is curvy and hilly and I never really ever feel outgunned. Those 231CC mills are meant to be ridden pinned and kinda abused if we’re being honest. Past 7k RPM and the R3 turns into Mr. Hyde lol. A quick note on PPE- Fly Racing makes a “Flux Air” jacket that’s basically like an armored jacket made outta football jersey material. Even in 90 degrees when you’re riding it doesn’t even feel like it’s on. Abrasion is NO JOKE!! 🥴 Same for the shoes- ditch em and get motorcycle specific stuff. Can a R3 (or any 300/400) keep up with normal traffic? Yes, easily. Is a R3 (or any 300/400) fun? Yes, at any skill level, its also cheaper to maintain than higher CC levels. Will a R3 (or any 300/400) feel fast if i'm a new rider? Yes, super fast. Will I outgrow a R3 (or any 300/400)? You will get use to the acceleration in a month or two. But mastering handling and braking will take years. Can a R3 (or any 300/400) keep up with 600cc+? If they are going all out than no, but rarely people are going all out on the street. On a curvy road you may even pass one if your skilled enough. Is it worth getting a R3 (or any 300/400) if im not knew to bikes? Depends, if you already know you love HP than no. But if having a lot of power is not important to you, then its worth getting because your getting 90% of the experience other sport bike riders are getting. And at a much less cost. I finally decided by a 2015. At 80 miles an hour on the freeway it's not near Red line. It's pushing roughly in the 8000 to 9000 range. Which is just under half of the RPM but honestly up there it just doesn't have much power. As far as in town it seems to be okay but the biggest problem that absolutely has is the massive amount of engine braking. So much so to the point it breaks the rear tire loose and starts to Skid if you fully let off the throttle. And that's even with better aftermarket tires.... I'm hoping to save up enough to do the Norton tune that supposedly gets rid of some of the engine braking problem. I could see a new writer easily crashing because of the rear tire braking free due to the engine braking and not knowing how to recover. As for anybody wondering why I chose the r3, I don't want a larger bike. It's not that I can't handle it I just want the lightest weight bike that I can be on and I need a seat height that is correct so that I can get both feet flat on the ground. Yes that's a necessity for me because I have physical limitations due to health. I've always owned Yamaha motorcycles. I mean technically I guess the two Hondas I ever had would count has owning something else but so minimal it doesn't really count in my mind. I probably own roughly a dozen Yamahas

Thanks for sharing! I can totally agree about the engine breaking. After I got my tune from bauce racing on the r3 the reduction in engine breaking definitely helped smoothen the ride. Current on a 2023 r7 on stock map and the engine breaking on that is still quite intense. When I let off the throttle I get surged forward and it’s quite uncomfortable. Ride safe!

Bikes get affected a lot by rider weight, especially the low HP ones. It is for that reason the vast majority of them are geared short, as in top speed way over their top HP rpm, to cater for heavier riders imo. For that reason, If you are a light rider, like below 80kgs, you can easily get away with lenghtening the gearing to reduce highway rpm on the R3.

it has as a bit more power as a 125 while still being 70kg heavier for smaller roads its fine probably but the only sports bike ive owned was a ducati 750 and a mito 125 rest were enduro/supermoto and ive never been on bigger roads with them

A bit more power? From 15 hp to 42 hp is a way more than a bit, that's 180% more power. It's like you're saying an R3 is a bit more powerful than an R6.

The Kawasaki z400 will scare you if you full throttle, full throttle is a 28mm twist from zero, most people that ride the z400 never even 1/2 throttle, it too wicked.😮

If anyone thinks its underpowered then they haven't put the throttle to the wall yet. I'm constantly surprised by how much power it actually has. Mind you I'm new to riding so maybe that's why. Its tame down in the low RPM's, but the power shows up once you are north of 8k rpm. I've hit 110kph in 1st gear at about 11500rpm. Its a good beginner bike. On the other hand if you are comparing it to an R1 then... yeah its underpowered.
@PerciusLive Жыл бұрын
110 kph is impossible in 1st. You redline 1st gear about 45kph.

It's very underpowered. On ramps to the highway, I had to redline the bike in every gear to get up to the flow of traffic to merge (75mph).

I think that 390-400 cc range is perfect for people who want performance at an affordable rate. In India that money gets u a duke 390 which puts out 44 bhp.. which is quite fun to ride tbh. I have such fond memories of the duke 390.

Do you wish you upgraded into something bigger than the R3 coming from the Z125? Or did it still feel like a big leap upgrading to 300 from 125?
@RickyMoto2 жыл бұрын
For me the 300 was a big jump, especially when I first got it I felt like the r3 was overkill. I’m a fairly new rider even though I been riding for a bit over a year I barely rode my z125 and same goes for the r3. I also wanna go through each class of bike and feel the difference gradually as I eventually hope I settle at a 1000
@cenix47572 жыл бұрын
@@RickyMoto I respect the patience taking your time learning to ride and not jumping straight to the biggest bikes but what I think you'll find is that a 1000 is just going to be unfun to ride in the public streets, especially in a place like new york. Anything past a 600 sport bike you really can't use the bikes power on the public roads unless you're willing to risk serious fines and losing your lisence going 150 mph on the highway
