The answer to the title question is a hard no. Not because the bike is a bad bike for that class, but because if you are new to dirt riding, you need to have something smaller, lighter, maneuverable for you to get your feet on the ground and get used to it. It is a whole different world of riding on dirt than on pavement. Cannot over state that enough. Ruts, rocks, etc. You don't want to be a novice or out of shape rider on dirt and throw your leg over a big adventure bike and just go for it. That is a recipe for disaster. Fatigue and spills not to mention lifting the bike back up after spilling multiple times is no bueno.

Agree, Only been road riding 2 years , I find the T7 great but I grew up riding farm bikes and trail bikes from about 7 years old till 59 so the T7 was an easy transition but still a handfull compared to a dirtbike.

My first time off-road was on the Tenere explore which is lower. I was scared as hell got my motorcycle license since January and yes I stalled the bike when cornering put feet down couldn’t push it back up from the position and someone helped me balance it. They said for no experience I did great. I wanna learn how to do it properly on the tenere

I somewhat disagree. Is it the best bike to start on with no dirt riding experience? Definitely not. But if you’re an experienced street rider and have done 4x4 off-roading then you understand the principles of off-roading and how to pick lines. Just make sure you’re strong enough to lift the bike back up and ride within your skill level

Literally only have ridden my vstrom 1000. Zero expereic e riding smaller bikes, both on road and off. It's not that difficult. You overstate the impossibilities of bikes off road.

Stop exaggerating. Riding this off-road motorcycle is nothing special, even if you've never done it before. There are people who, if they are given two metal balls, will lose one and break the other. If you are not one of these people, feel free to go off-road with this motorcycle.

I've previously owned a KLR 650, KTM 690 and Kawasaki kx450f. For reference I'm 6'2" 220lbs. The klr was my first bike and it was terribly top heavy and sluggish but did most things alright. The Ktm being lighter was better offroad but not everything I was looking for on the road. Kx450 was obviously best offroad and super light making on road fun but sketchy at times. Now, I bought a T7 recently after not riding for a few years. The T7 for me, essentially a novice offroad with a bike this size has been fantastic. Day 1 of owning it I took it down some of the worst class 6 roads I know here in western NH, all big rocks and mixes of loose sand / slick leaves without falling or dropping the bike. This bike feels like a mix of all my previous bikes with better clutch control, slow maneuvering stability and throttle responsiveness. To end this essay. Is this a good bike for new adv/offroad riders? That depends on each individuals skill level and what you plan to do with it. If its your first bike ever on road or off, no a 700cc with emphasis on low end torque shouldn't be. For me though its been the best bike I've ever owned and the best fit to able to learn/ grow my skills with. Thanks for reading!

you mentioned several of the bikes I am looking at... rode street 1989-95 (average squid skills) and had a crf250r set up for single track 2012-2014 (decent at it but not great) thats it and its been so long I feel I am basically beginner. Looking for a bike to get around town but mainly for trips on as much dirt road as I can find (MABDR type stuff, nothing hard other than washed out road and river crossings) I keep reading people recommending tiny little bikes but $$$$ seems like an expensive way to go... 5k on a starter bike only to drop 10-14k a year latter..... I get the little bike thing but I keep going back and forth between a starter bike and the t7 I really want. (it's not exactly big by adventure standards) 6'2" 200lbs but 52 years old. ***hardest part of buying a motorcycle seems like my height, good grief "big" huge displacement bikes are physically smaller than 500's on my day :O

I'm a beginner motorcycle rider and have a tiny bit of experience riding a 230cc dirt bike, but I am seriously looking at getting the Tenere 700. The reasoning behind it is because I have been riding BMX, mountain bikes, and electric mountain bikes for about 45 years, and I am a very skilled at it. Not all bicycle experience translates to motorcycle expertise, but on the other hand a lot of it does. Considering that I'm 6'1", 210 lbs, in very good physical shape, can drive a 5-speed manual transmission in a car and a 10-speed transmission in a semi-truck, and have tons of valuable experience riding MTB's seriously, I am highly confident that with going to a motorcycle safety course and approaching the motorbike with caution and respect, I will have very little problem learning how to ride it proficiently. What are your thoughts?

I learned to ride off road on a T7 and definitely feels like learning on hard mode despite being young, relatively fit, average height and having plenty of experience riding ATVs, moutain bikes and occasionally taking street bikes down moderate dirt roads.

For a new offroad rider id recommend a 300cc dual sport like the crf300l or kawasaki klx300. Frankly more guilt free fun can be had, and its less tiring. This is coming from a more experienced rider who has had both the smaller dual sports and larger bikes including a t7 which is my current bike. I can only have 1 bike and like both adventure, road, and offroad riding and the t7 fits the bill for me. So far im loving it but its no dual sport offroad thats for sure.

thats hard to do... $6k for the little bike, another 1500 for suspension and not going to get many highway miles in (everything from where I live involves highway) not much in the middle, a Honda 400 Rally sure seems like it would sell really well in the US.
@joshdoddadbod

@MrRay645 the klx 300 has fantastic suspension as stock. For more experienced riders larger displacement would be nice for sure. The unicorn dual sport lies in the 400-500cc category in my mind.

Yamaha killed it with their commercials featuring Pol Tarres. Lots of new ADV riders / beginners thought they could do the same thing with the bike. The reality is very different. I personally went for a Tuareg 660 which fits me better

This bike is NOT suitable for NEW riders, especially off-road. Too (top) heavy and very difficult to pick up from the ground. Be smart and stick to sub-500cc with a low seat height when you start. Maybe go for a scrambler if you want to do some off-road.

Would something like a DR650 be any better? Problem is I don't really want to spend time/money loading bikes on a trailer, so would need something that's somewhat highway/road capable to get to some suitable dirt/off-road areas?

@@richardsimpson3792 brother a KTM 1290 super adventure is sub 250 kg and off road bikes don't get any bigger than that, i think somewhere between 170 to 180 kg wich is what the G 310 GS and KTM 390 adventure weigh respectively is already pushing the limits of what a beginner should be riding off road. (although the size of the rider matters too.)

I just bought the T7 with zero off road experience. I only ride light gravel roads in a really slow pace and getting used to standing up on the bike. Anything else, I wouldn’t do on the T7. If I had access to trails and more hardcore riding, i wouldn’t have bought something 250-300cc bike to practice and learn on. The T7 is way to high and top heavy to learn on. I had a tip over with it, and man is a bitch to lift up again 🥵

I own a T7 and I strongly disagree. The T7 is NOT a good bike to learn offroading, for this it is too heavy. Get a lighter bike, like a Honda CRF 300. I love my T7, it its a great bike, no complaints at all. But every kg counts, find something in the 160kg range, it will be a lot easier and quicker to learn offroading.
@mesabman
@mesabman Күн бұрын
Let me ask your opinion. Even though you disagree that it's NOT a good bike to learn offroading on (and I also agree), I have over 45 years of dirt riding BMX, MTB, and E-MTB, so I already have a lot of skill and experience navigating in loose & soft dirt, hardpack, and rock gardens. I am proficient at light jumps, bunny hops, and track stands, and can ride Black Diamond MTB trails. Even though the T7 is not the ideal motorbike to learn to ride on, I think all my biking experience gives me a significant advantage.
@ruedigerfriebel8454
@ruedigerfriebel8454 Күн бұрын
@mesabman i totally agree. Having that experience changes the picture. Shifting the 205+kg of the T7 while riding is a challenge, to pick it up even more. I now downgraded to a Kove450, but would take the T7 to offroad track happily, having some thousand Kilometers offroad experience. When you know what you are doing it is good offroad, but if you do the wrong thing, you get faster in trouble than on a less heavy bike. Having a lot of MTB experience means you know what to do, most of the time at least smile, like me today.
