I've owned a 2017 AT/DCT for a few years now. Got a great deal on it and have come to love the DCT. That said, I was pretty keen on the lighter weight and better off road manners of the T7 about a year after I got my AT. I wanted one pretty badly for a year or so but unfortunately, they were virtually impossible to find in my area, so my AT stayed the the garage. Now a bit farther down the road, so to speak, I'm fine with the AT, and have a KTM500 for more serious off road. Setting it up to do some light overnight trips and see how it works in that environment. I ride alone most of the time and even the Tenere could be a challenge to pick up if something went wrong in difficult terrain. My KTM, no problem. My AT is perfect for secondary/gravel/jeep roads and can still knock out more road miles in a day than I want to ride. Bottom line, my AT and KTM are working for me now.....

I harp on about this a lot, but cost for adventure bikes is more important than cost for street bikes, because if you're spending a lot of time off road you *will* be crashing that bike, and you will be fixing it. I'm fine spending more on a street bike because I'm not going to break it, so I'm just spending that premium once. I find the more expensive the bike I'm taking offroad is, the more hesitant I am to "send it" and have fun. If I was riding a 20,000 BMW, I'm absolutely not going to try the stuff I'd try with a $10,000 Tenere.

Great comparison, all valid points. I was in this exact boat a year ago. In the end, I went for the AT. For me, the base AT strikes a really good balance between offroad capabilities yet still comfortable on the street (esp. the seat, cruise control, wind protection, gearing etc). Especially if you want to travel two up like I plan to do. I also use my bike for commuting, so the safety features were important for me as well (especially in the wet and cold in winter). The fit and finish was what sealed the deal for me. What you mentioned on the standing up position/maneuverability is very true. Standing just feel natural and easier to handle standing compared to the T7, but on road the opposite is true where the AT handles better. It is all about finding the compromise that is right for you.

I have over 17,000 miles on my T7, including 4500 miles of the TAT last summer; cracked side stand switch and cracked front rim (I tried to bang out a dent right on the manufacturing seam) are the only issues I’ve had with this bike! I love my T7! It’s fun, simple, reliable, and looks great. I have rented Africa Twins in France and Georgia (the country) and love this bike, too. I would not trade my T7 for one but if I ever replaced my BMW R1200 GSA, it would be with the Africa Twin Adventure Sports. I love the BMW but would never get another bike that expensive past my wife; only got it because the Africa Twin wasn’t available in 2014. I have a BETA 500 for the roughest stuff.

Just picked up a manual 2017 Africa Twin for the same price as a new Tenere with only 3300mi on it (steal of a deal). I was in the same boat comparing the two and ended up going with the slightly larger ATwin. I live on a dirt road, with trails all around, and I gotta say it feels lighter than the 511lbs wet, even when picking it up. It's still a bit of a bear but the CofG is great on the thing. Friend of mine has a T7 and I prefer the AT ergos over it. All in all, both great bikes, and comes down to user preferences. At least with the 2017 model year it didn't get that wonky touch screen, huge misstep that honda did there. Wonderful channel, man, keep up the good work

great comparison, well presented! I agree these 2 bikes are very "comparable" - in that if you were shopping for a new adventure bike, these 2 could easily be on the top of your list! I agree that the AT does lean more towards "touring" - but to me, that includes a simple long day of riding. If I'm out for 10 or 12 hours, some highway time, back roads, gravel roads, un-maintained roads, maybe a power line track connecting a few roads, the comfort of the AT is undeniable. Add in cruise control and Android Auto and it makes a top notch experience.

My AT is 2016 and doesn't have all the newer electronics, but it does have the extra weight of the DCT, tipping the scale at well over 500 lbs. On the other hand, most of my riding is on pavement or not too technical off-road, so the AT is perfectly suitable. Great comparison. I like seeing the T7 compared to every bike out there. I'd still go for a T7 over anything besides a Tuareg 660 at this point. Seems like the new bikes coming out are more of the same and aren't trying to compete with the T7. I've felt like the T7 was special since the press release branded it as a streetable off-road machine with a CP2 engine. It fits my use purpose as an all-rounder and I feel like I made a great choice with owning one. Feels like owning a truck in terms of utility. Comes down to value for me as well. If you put the price difference of the bikes into $4k worth of upgrades on a T7, you could add ~10HP, shave off 20lbs, and upgrade the suspension with a combination of de-cat/slip-on, ECU tune, lithium battery, tail tidy, lighter skid plate. Out of the box, they're both great bikes that are capable beyond my skill level. I prefer lighter/value if given the choice. Picking up 500lbs is a struggle for me and could leave me stranded. 450lbs is really pushing it, 500lbs is trouble, which is why I focused on lightening my T7. Also, the T7 is one of the best sounding bikes I've ever heard. Absolutely wicked sounding blip.

I think adventure bikes weight is way overblown issue. Im riding adv bikes for almost 10 years, and recently got ktm640 adventure as lightweight adv mostly out of curiosity and 30cm suspension. Lets see if that weight diff helps that much! And to be honest i hate it. I hate everything about it. Yes. she can go evverytwhere, its basically enduro with fairing, but thats not what make adv bike an adv bike. Everything besides hardcore offroad capability is absolutely terrible about it. Onroad for anyrthing more than 30minugtes- forget about it! Tbh i never needed to drove my 200kg twin bikes anywhere where they are too heavy. I rode there because i WANTED and wanted a challenge, its fun. But for real adv riding, you dont need 30cm ground clearence and 150kg weight. And single cylinder is just absolute mistake for adv bike. So for me - yes please, comfortable, easy to live with, non vibrating, 200kg twins with good wind protection all day. Too much people confuse adventure riding with enduro.

If your wanting multiple week adventure, putting on big miles some days, remote. Get the adventure sports. We don't run single track on these, so all of us have DCT. Fits all conditions better. City traffic, and slow terrain, won't stall. I have Electric suspension on mine and wouldn't live without it now. Tunes for dirt, gravel or pavement, comfort/ compliance or pillion/gear needs at a push of a button. Incredible!!! 21000km on my 2020 ATASes and Honda reliable. If you can afford, get the suspension and DCT. I'm 6'2 210 and 56 years young. Rode dirt most of my life, and this bike suits me wonderful. Cheers Cesar, happy shopping :-) P.S. get some Mitas E07'S too!

The Adventure Sports is the better touring bike with monster range and the electronic suspension is awesome. However, I don't really ride across the continent so I'd save some money on the base model. It's also lighter for off roading.

The AT Adventure Sports does NOT weigh 505 pounds. The standard version does!

AT is much better - more power and more comfort. T7 looks made from cheap Chinese components : cables are not weather protected and so forth. However, if you drop T7 you will not be crying, just workhorse, thought it's still overpriced.
@Angry-Lynx Жыл бұрын
Just some thought on price, very important point though imo ; currently i can get 2016 AT for arouond 40k PLN(9300usd), while cheapest T7 is atleast 50k. so if you dont care about having as young bike as possible for sake of age (like most normal people), technically AT is cheaper. I could potentially afford AT but thats at max of my budget. T7- nope. And thats more way advanced, objectively higher class bike. With that said i MAY be in market for AT, while T7 doesnt interest me at all. Not because its bad, i just cant get it under 40k :) And i do prefer AT anyway but thats besides my point ;

I think Honda might as well have looked into their crystal ball to the future, and designed a bike that made the T7 irrelevant. If the AT was released a couple years after the T7, the reviewers would have called it the T7 killer! I own both and the Honda is better in every way, even off road. The bikes when released out into the wild are actually very similar overall considering their differences. Both of these bikes feel huge. The T7 is about 50lbs lighter, but feels like it's heavier than the AT because it's center of gravity is way up high. The suspension is stiff in the top of the stroke which makes it nervous, yet it bottoms out like a freight train on every g-out, washout, and kicker when you get a foot or so of air. The AT isn't any better at bottoming resistance, but it's much more compliant and keeps the tires on the dirt. The yamaha is a real handful to ride in technical terrain because of that stiff suspension action, taller seat height, and ridiculous top heaviness. In contrast, the africa twin suspension soaks up the rocks and roots in technical terrain like they're not even there, making it much easier to control, even fully loaded with luggage! The T7 is a well balanced bike in terms of the forks/shock and can be ridden like an absolute goon on fast smooth dirt, but the AT is no slouch here either and has a much more usable suspension everywhere else. Throw a few loose rocks into the mix and the AT becomes far more trustworthy at speed, because it's not bucking and kicking sideways all the time like an MX bike in the woods. As mentioned in this video, they aren't made for hardcore off-roading, but on the "hard adventure" side of things you can get both bikes to all the same places since the size and weight is the limiting factor for both bikes, not one or the other. Skill level is irrelevant here, because that doesn't change when you hop off one bike onto the other. As far as on-road performance goes, there's simply no contest. The AT can be left in 1st gear at green lights in town, while on the T7 you're shifting to third by the time you're leaving the intersection like you're riding a dual sport. Similarly, in the twisties the T7 reminds me of a 125. You're screaming the engine and banging through gears like mad, but you look down and you're not really going very fast lol. On the AT, you can pretty much leave it in 2nd or 3rd and blow by the T7 in those same twisties, while having to let off on the straights to reduce the chances of loosing your license. On the highway the AT can be fully loaded with luggage and still get better fuel economy than the naked T7 at 130-140km/h. I can bang out 1300km days on the AT but it's a struggle to hit 1000km on the T7. The elephant in the room is of course the price difference. The base model AT, here in Canada is about $4500 more than the base T7, and worth every single penny. I'd only buy the base model of each unit. If you're gonna be in remote areas simple is best, and off-road lower is best. For true on and off-road exploring I'd take a 1st gen crf1000l over any of the new stuff. For more road based travel I'd take something bigger. Just my 2 cents.

For $3500 what can I add to the T7 to make it just as good as the AT1K
@DifferentSpokesTV Жыл бұрын
It will never be as powerful as the AT but it’s lighter, so that’s a trade off. Just depends what you do on it. You could upgrade suspension to make the T7 even better off road.

I SIMPLY LOVE THE GEOMETRY OF THE ADVENTURE BIKE AND GIVEN MY AGE, ( 66 LAST NOV.) THESE DAYS I WOULD LEAN MORE TOWARDS THE BASIC A T. BUT DID OWN THE YAHAHA 400 ENDURO 2SMOKE BACK IN THE 70S...... THESE DAYS ID EVEN CONSIDER THE TRANSALP IF HONDA EVER GOT OFF THEIR LAZY BOY RECLINERS AND IMPORTED THEM TO THE US......... HELL WERE LUCK TO EVEN SEE THE TWO NEW 2023 MODELS OF THE A T.... UN LIKE YOU IN THE NORTH COUNTRY..... GRRRRRRR IM READY TO BUY BUT HONDA IS STILL DRAGGING ITS FEET..... BTW YET ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO...... WELL DONE........

The AT is just a way better bike. I got to have a T7 world raid for a whole weekend. I liked the engine. But the rest of the bike was so dissapointing i stil cant get over it. Over hyped bike. Where i live the bike is very expencive. But feels like a bike worth much less. Buttons feel cheap. The KYB suspension is no where near the honda showa suspension. Even road riding felt uncomfortable. Bad seat. I cant remember the last time i was so dissapointed. If i would have to get the T7 to a modded lvl as the honda. It would prob cost the same. And stil have none of the tech the AT has. Non dct version. The world raid is without a doubt not worth it from my experience riding it. My butt is still offended hehe. Sure if you ride 20% road and 80% dirt the T7 standard version is prob worth a look. But i would stil look at something else. Maybe even a tuareg. The most important thing you can do when chosing a bike. Never buy if you can not test it. Never.

Don't get the DCT till they fix the low speed clutch burnout issue. Tell Honda you won't buy till their dct clutch is safe to practise moto-gymkhana skills

I had the T7 Rallye for a year. After 12,000km, I can say that: too heavy and high for enduro (I'm 189 cm so not short). Terrible on road (not enough power, revs high, drinks heavily). Changed for the ATAS and it's a whole different universe. It's superb on road, feels like on a cloud - much more power, better seat, better wind protection, nice information on the dash, actually reliable fuel gauge, much better range (I did 600 km on 1 tank!, try that with the T7), cruise control, etc., etc., etc. Yes, it's heavier on the scale BUT, the center of gravity is much lower and I find the bike way more balanced than the T7. Of course, on gravel trails or dirt tracks, you have to watch your curve speed, brake a bit earlier, etc. but when you go slowly (trial - like), I feel as good on the AT as on the T7. Quality wise, it simply is 2 different universes, not to mention the ease of maintenance, where the ATAS is wayyy superior (just removing and replacing the bash plate on the T7 was such a pain and the ATAS is such a Honda breeze).

These bikes have more electronic do dads and modes than the wife's bedroom buddy when I'm out riding. I'll stick with the KLR, you can toss it in the bushes and not care and less Murphy or his kids to say hello IMO. That said, if any weekend warriors that went back to Bronco Sports want to sell theirs to me, I won't say no. I'll make her a dirty girl.
