What is UP KZbin! Welcome to Fred's Full Throttle!
After a few weeks of Z06 news, and last week's video of my time at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, I can tell everyone is waiting for my next Z06 Deep Dive! So let's not keep everyone waiting!
This week, I am doing an overview on the Z07 package. I'll be talking through what it includes, differences with the regular Z06, pros and cons, and then ending with my take on it, and if I plan to spec it on my Z06.

Hi Bill, Huge huge thank you for such kind words! You really don't know how much this kind of comment boosts my day! A lot of people probably don't think about the logistics of running a channel, and most importantly how much work/effort/practice go into filming anything, much less doing it repeatedly, in an entertaining manner, with decent editing, and keeping the audience engaged. I gotta say when I look at my older videos (honestly anything older than 6 months old....so MOST of my videos), I can't even believe that I'm the same person. The quality has improved so much with all the practice. It's just such a nice feeling to know that others enjoy this thing I do for fun. :) Have a great day, and thanks for brightening mine! -Fred

Hey Fred! Congratulations on becoming a "Headliner" on MECF (Mid-Engine Corvette Forum) posted by John. I know you kinda felt like you got a bit beat up on with the your first video I submitted a few months back, but it was all the result of a misunderstanding in messaging. Looks like you got some Kudos for this video on the forum, so well done. I believe the key is you're doing your homework and sticking to the facts, which I can't say others have been doing lately. Too much unfounded speculation and reliance on so called "Insider Information" from unreliable sources has been their downfall..... Keep up the good work and by all means, keep having fun doing what you're doing...

Hey Tom, Thanks, I appreciate it! I didn't actually know it was posted till I saw your comment, so thanks for sharing that! Definitely made me feel good to see it mentioned in a more positive light this time! I really appreciate your kind words, and I do plan to stick to the formula of being as accurate as I can, cite my sources, and not give in to speculation, heresay, or rumor. Those "insider sources" are too inaccurate for me, so others can run with it, but frequently it's turned out those people haven't had the whole story, so it muddles the message and/or lets people down when they take those things as "truth/fact" and it turns out it's not right. Thanks again man for sharing this and letting me know, really made me feel good that MECF cast me in a better light this time. Agreed that the last time was less clear messaging on my part, which I've worked to be better at. :) Have a great weekend, and thanks again! -Fred

I'm with you. Personally I'll be getting the low wing on mine. I don't plan to do any actual racing, and for trackdays or autocross, the regular spoiler is still more than enough, as I'm not a good enough driver to where I'd be at speeds where the big aero really would make a difference. -Fred

Nice video but I believe your comment on the suspension and the CF wheels is a bit off when I asked the engineer I was told the car is calibrated different for the CF wheels and buying the CF after the fact would not yield the same set up as if you bought everything from the factory. I was told the cars suspension, braking and I believe steering calibrations are different and the Z07 is 15% stiff over non Z07 regardless of CF wheels. Idk but again nice video overall man
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, Thanks for reaching out! My apologies if my wording wasn't right or didn't make sense. The point I was trying to make was that the calibration is different for a few of the systems (forget which ones I mentioned in the video). Those calibrations aren't physical hardware, just software. This part I got directly from Road&Track among several sources. This means that the software can be updated, however as to if Chevy will offer an update to non-z07 cars in order to accommodate the CF wheels is unknown (my guess would be no, but not sure). The stiffness percent differences were sourced from Chevy directly, as well as multiple publications. My apologies if I relayed the wrong numbers. Hope this helps clarify, my intent was not to mislead, occasionally mistakes happen or my wording isn't perfect. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video. Have a nice day! -Fred

Hi Justin, Thanks for reaching out, and for the kind words! I appreciate it! I try to keep my approach simple: Keep it honest, to the point, cite my sources, and don't give in to clickbait, rumors, or heresay. I started covering the C8 Z06 specifically because I couldn't find what I wanted (that approach) on any other channels, and was doing the research myself to learn more about the car. I figured "I bet others are in the same boat", and decided to start sharing the things I learned. Turns out it resonates with a lot of people, and have been growing pretty steadily since then (last fall). Anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and nice to hear from you! -Fred

You mentioned one difference in the aerodynamics was the side skirts. From what I’ve seen both the Zo6 and Zo6 have the same wide side skirts. No?
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Taunupe86, Thanks for reaching out! Both cars do have side skirts, and from what I can tell, it's the same shape/size, however with the Z07 the side skirts are exposed carbon fiber (possibly you can get them in carbon flash painted too if you want). The base Z06 they are some sort of plastic/polymer in a matte finish (like the C7's). I should have been a bit more clear about that. One other difference is the underbody strakes are only on the Z07 cars, and those come out right under the side skirts on both sides. Thanks for pointing this out! Have a nice day, nice to hear from you! -Fred

I like the deeper front lip spoiler and canards of the Z07 but I could do without the big wing spoiler, just looks cheap to me, I think the low spoiler I integrates much better and makes the car look classier and more sleek, in any case let's just joke the dealerships don't drastically mark them up.

Awww Yeaah... It's Fredday Again...ha ha ha! Fred, Hope you enjoyed your Vacation & Porsche time! Our take on the Z06 and planned use for the car are very similar and probably why our build specs are the same! Maybe you can confirm this, but aren't the CCBs being limited to ordering the Z07 spoiler option too? Anyway, excellent break down on Z06/Z07 differences and options! With the Z07 being used as the Indy Pace Car, I was hoping for some more GM information to start trickling in, but unfortunately it has not! Not sure if I mentioned this yet, but we are doing Live Chat's on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm on Justin's, Horse Power Obsessed channel! @@TrigunV4S if I remember correctly, it can be added to the Z06 package, but it comes with the Z07 wing as a package deal! I was originally looking at the Orange calipers as an option and was told the Orange are CCBs only and must come with Z07 wing. I'm hoping I'm wrong though.

Hi Shane, Sorry for the huge delay! Night Train Rides is correct, CCB's can be optioned for any version of the car, though Z07 then makes them mandatory (part of the package as it were). My last Corvette was as stiff as possible, all after market parts. In fact the only original equipment was the alternator. That car and the new Z06 has basically 2 uses: track days and cruising in the mountains. However, I run the mountains like I run at the track. I pick low volume roads with no houses around and run hard. As far as track days, I checked and Road Atlanta has ~20 track days between now and Dec 31st. I will try to attend as many as possible once I have my Z06, at least monthly spring through fall, maybe more, so the Z07 for sure! As you know from the tire discussion, Cup 2 R for me! I ran Nitto R-compound track tires for on the street on my C5R-427 and IMHO well worth the extra $$$. I do agree, for most people the Z07 option is a waste. Although this may offend a few, the Z06 is a waste for most too. One additional comment: according to Motor Trend the Z07 suspension is only 8% stiffer, so I am not sure it would make the ride on the street in Touring Mode even noticeable.

Like ZTK, I’ll take a pass. Not interested in the wing or Michelins that last 3,000 miles. Even Tadge himself said steel brakes are better if your not tracking the car. While we have no pricing, these 3LZ guys with carbon revolution wheels and ADM are going to be looking at $150k+
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Z07 really only makes sense if you "must have it" for looks, exclusivity, or ideally because you're going to track it. I think there will be more than a few people who check the box, not realizing how quickly those tires are going to wear out. I also agree that you tack on just a couple options like the carbon wheels and z07, and things are going to get mighty pricey, mighty fast. Thanks for reaching out Golden Maneuver, nice to hear from you again! -Fred

@@goldenmanuever1176 I'm both humbled and very appreciative! That's cool we're about the same age (I'm 38....jeez, coming up on 39 lol). You must be one good looking dude (I think I just hurt my arm patting myself on the back), lol. I'm with you about other channels, not that there's anything wrong with them, but it's not usually for me. I will also say that I do feel MANY car channels get caught up in the spectacle of supercars, glamour shots, showing off (whether overt or just "humble bragging"), and it comes across to me as pretty insincere and more just chasing views. Not that I blame anyone with hundreds of thousands (or more) of subs, but it doesn't do anything for me. Heck, at cars and coffee meets or track events, while I think exotics are alright, I'm way more interested in the cars that get driven, are tweaked and tuned by the owners, and have a story. I appreciate that you appreciate a bit more critical eye, and a more measured approach! Have a nice evening, and thanks again! Side note, I haven't really moved up on the list at MacMulkin too much (1 slot in like 5 months), but I'm committed to the car, and already have all the money I need saved up, so it's really just putting in the time waiting at this point. I do have a few things in the works to potentially get to drive/borrow one of the cars this year so I can do a few videos on my impressions well before my own car comes in, though nothing is confirmed yet. -Fred

Hi Nam! Thanks for reaching out, nice to hear from you again! If I was buying a set of tires separately, for good performance, but better longevity, for me it would be the Pilot Super Sports (now replaced by the Pilot Sport 4 S's). That's what my car came with, and what I replaced my original tires with last fall. They have TONS of grip, heat up nicely on the track, and my first set lasted 16k miles, many of which were 3 car control clinics and an autocross. 16k miles doesn't sound like a lot for a daily driving car, but with my car being weekend only, those 16k miles lasted 5 years. I assume there are several alternatives, but for me that seemed like a fair balance between grip and endurance. Hope that helps! Have a great day! -Fred

Hi Gage, Thanks for reaching out, and for the kind words. The choices aren't easy (are they ever for something this expensive?), and especially without pricing info released, it feels like we only have half of the story. The funny part is that there isn't even some blanket advice like "buy what you think will give you the most fun, or suit you best" (which is what I'm doing), because people buy cars like this for a lot of different reasons. From Tracking, to wanting to sell for a profit later on, to cars and coffee queens, everyone has a different motivation for the options they pick. For me I think the biggest unknown is that it's unclear that I'll have any chance to drive the car before I have to place my order (a situation many of us are in). It's weird thinking about spending this much money without getting to touch, drive, experience the result first. Fortunately the consolation is that the C8 came out so good that I'd imagine this will be a home run no matter what. Anyway, have a great day, and good luck on the choices! Trim levels will be my next deep dive, don't know the exact timing, but keep an eye out! -Fred

Excellent presentation and well thought out Fred! The “Deep Dives” you present have done more for me in looking more realistically at the ZO6 than any other Vlog. Really makes me consider: Want over Need! I want the ZO6 because of all it offers, but at a large price tag. It’s going to be a True Super Car. But given all that, Do I need it? The place I’m at on the MM List, I have years to digest the reviews and commentary of those before me. It will also give me time for a market recovery. The honest few factors as Cons might be: My Age in 4 years? My Health? $$$$$$ to purchase My purpose(s) for wanting the car? Realistically, the ZO6 is probably not the car for me I’m sad to admit! I’ve barely scratched the surface of the 2022 HTC C8. I’m still in the Break In Period. I might wait out my place on the list and then decide! But, No ZO7 for me
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Doug! I appreciate that, thanks for the kind words. As is probably painfully plain to see, I'm an engineer in my working life, and that mindset trickles down into everything I do just about. Unless I do a thoughtful analysis of things on my own, I get "analysis paralysis", and can't make a decision. Lead with data is my motto. So the funny part is that I'd have done this kind of breakdown myself in a spreadsheet even if I wasn't filming for YT. The fact that others appreciate the approach has been a nice silver lining to the mental processes I've been doing for my whole life. I think you're approaching it right, and I think you're asking the right questions. Separating want, from need is a difficult thing, but I think doing these mental exercises is beneficial. Your line about the Z06 not being the right car for you potentially, isn't a bad thing. I've had things that I set my heart on, spent years working towards, but when it came time to pull the trigger I just couldn't do it, because a part of me realized it wasn't the right/best/appropriate/responsible choice. That said, you do have plenty of time to decide, and the plus is that I'm sure your current C8 could fetch a real good price when you get the call from MM, but at least you're weighing your options. Take it one day at a time, and I'll be interested to hear what you think of your current car once you open it up past break in. FWIW, I never really considered the C8 because of how good my C7 GS is. It's everything I really wanted in a car. The C8 Z is enough different (in many ways), that it finally is what pushed me a bit to think about changing cars. But, if I had a C8 like you do, I don't know that I could justify the extra money to bump up to the Z. As my wife has told me, there'll always be something out there a little bit newer, faster, flashier, exclusive, and unless I had money to burn (which I don't!), it can be a painful cycle to try to keep up. The key (with the wisdom I'm growing over time), is to find what makes YOU happy, and especially at your stage in life, what little advice I can offer would be prioritize your own happiness over anything else. I don't know if that will help decide on the car, but one way to think of it, would be to imagine: If you were the only person left on earth, and you had your current car. There were no new reviews, no people to impress, no car shows to win, no races to have, but just driving. You, the road, and your C8. Would you feel that you needed the Z06? The answer might be yes, that's something only you can answer. But for me, when you think of yourself and remove all the societal parts of a decision like this, it can sometimes help clarify what matters to you. Just keep in mind that maybe some of those social factors do matter to you (everyone is different), so my best advice is go with your heart. :) Hope that helps! -Fred

@@FredsFullThrottle Thanks Fred!!! Your insight is “Spot On”! Lots of what I must consider. I’m lucky that at this point in life, I can make a big purchase if I want because we have been good savers over the years. ($ituation was much better at the end of December vs the Market Decline.) I could buy a new vehicle if I wanted, but my daily driver is a 2006 Ford Explorer with 152,000 miles on it. I like being under the radar in most instances! I’m enjoying the C8 and it’s more than enough power up to 4000 RPM thus far! So with the ZO6, I’ll see if I have an opportunity in the future to get one or perhaps my son will be in it. He just got married at age 29 this past weekend and in July he will begin his medical career as a Hospitalist. 26 weeks on and 26 weeks off, but when you’re on for 12 hours a shift it is very demanding. He might pass on the ZO6 because he’s more like his mother: Cars are transportation. Me, I started learning to drive on a 1960 Pontiac Bonnieville Convertible and took my Driver’s Test in a HUGE BOAT, a 1970 Buick Electra 225. The Trooper giving me the test said he usually sees kids in smaller cars, not the ones that take days to turn around! For my H.S. Graduation Present to commute to the PSU Branch Campus, I got a brand new off the showroom floor a 1973 340 Cuda. ($3,400 MSRP was just over $4,000) (Not sure if I told you my car history or not?) Because of a number of electrical issues, the Cuda was traded in on a 1975 400 4 Speed, Silver Trans Am. That was followed up by a 1979 Z28 I ordered. I wanted to go back to a “Stick Car” so I ordered a 1981 Z28. While out at a local watering hole, I ran into the son of the owner of the dealership. He told me about a 1976 Bright Blue Corvette that was in their showroom. Ok, I took a Test Drive and said I’ll take it, cancel my order on the Z28. So from 1981 until 2019, I had the 76. I then got more practical with my selection of vehicles. Maybe I should add, my dad was a school teacher and my mother was a housewife. He also had a mom and pop type convenience store and worked there at nights from 10pm until midnight. I had the 4 pm to 7 pm hours and on weekends I worked Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm. I never realized back in my teenage years and early 20s how much my parents sacrificed to buy the new Cuda. After that, I had to make the payments. I guess that’s why I lived at home until I got out on my own. Cars were a desirable item, but expensive to maintain. I often look back and wish I would have bought 4 wheel drive vehicles instead of running the tires off hot cars.

Thinking back in time some years ago, I realize now that I lied to myself! I remembered vowing after the purchase of my 2009 C6 to be more practical in the selection of future vehicles. Practical in the sense of thinking I should buy all wheel drive vehicles. I have more vehicles due to liking what I have and/or running them until they die. Daily Driver: 2006 Ford Explorer 152,000 miles (Just keeps going & going, surprisingly very dependable!!!) 2009 Ford Mustang GT 17,600 miles (Christmas family choice - I got outvoted on the Hemi Challenger) 2009 Chevrolet C6 Z51 Coupe 7,200 miles (My retirement present to myself) 2011 Ford F-250 Pick Up with Snowplow 11,400 miles (Have over 2,000 feet of driveway to plow) 2013 BMW 328xi 11,500 miles (Told the owner if he ever sold it, we wanted 1st chance to buy it; we did) 2016 Ford Explorer 76,000 miles - Wife’s Daily Driver (23s coming out, it’s 7-8 years old? Hard to believe!) 2022 C8 HTC Z51 411 miles (Best Corvette Ever!!!) Lucky that I have garage space for all. I/we just can’t seem to part with any vehicles! I just didn’t envision the C8 coming on the scene and/or having my retirement life cut short by Pancreatic Cancer. I’ve been doing well with my current treatment, but with just how much time I have left, I’m going to try to do the best I can to enjoy family, friends and activities. Fred, you have also been a great help to me in many ways! Thanks

Thanks Fred...Interesting details that I would not expect from the other guys. I would not be racing the car. I don't need the stiff suspension, the ceramic brakes, racing tires, the pair of strakes that project down about 1 1/4 inches + on each side behind each front wheels that channel the airflow under the car (would they bump into things like parking lot speed bumps?). I also like the sleek look of the low spoiler. I would want a splitter in the front and I do like the bright alloy wheel option. You probably can't get the dive planes without the Z07 package. I am not a real fan of carbon fiber wheels in general but I do believe that the C8 Z06 Carbon Revolution wheels are the best looking carbon fibers that I have seen...better than GT500 or even the Ford GT. I also see carbon fiber wheels as a fragile "unrepairable" option. Just takes one dumb curb rash mistake or worse, a pot hole or road hazard that you were not expecting. HOWEVER...I'm guessing that for future investment/resale purposes, the car may be worth more and be more desirable with ALL options. Ideally maybe have a set of those carbon fiber wheels in the garage if they are a relatively low cost option.

My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it! I'm with you, as several others have also mentioned, the restrictions/constraints on which options can be had together is a bit of a maze to navigate through, and I haven't yet found too many people that can get their ideal spec exactly as they'd ideally choose. Will be interesting to see when the *real* configurator comes online, rather than the kinda stripped out visualizer we have today. Have a nice day! -Fred

Another excellent video, Fred! So far on my score sheet related to your buildout, I'm 4 out of 5 (you threw me off on the HTC!). Thanks for the great content, and for keeping us well informed and entertained while we all painfully wait for this car to jump out. Quick question: Looks like your next Vid will be on trim packages - are you also going to reveal your paint and interior trim colors for your buildout? I know it's purely subjective, but as I'm building my Z06 along with yours, I'd be interested to see how you would complete your build! Very Best!

Lorenzo, my man, how are you doing? Nice to hear from you! Haha, I had to toss in the HTC to keep you guessing! To answer your question, I will share my full spec, including colors for the trim. I can't promise it won't change (especially upon seeing more Z's in person once they're released), but I've got it fairly narrowed in on, provided they don't discontinue colors that I'm interested in before my reservation is called. I'd be very interested to know your spec as well! Talk to you soon man! -Fred

@@FredsFullThrottle Fred, doing great! Thanks for responding; I know it's probably overwhelming with all the thoughtful responses you're getting, but always appreciated man. Agree with you on colors: I've narrowed it down to a few, but honestly this could all change depending on when my number finally gets called. I could honestly change my mind because I'm not dead set on anything yet, nor should I be I think. Anyway, here's what I have in mind for my build pulling from your score card categories: 1. Seats: GT2 2. Wheels: Forged Alloy (not sure on finish, but likely Machined Finish) 3. Brakes: Originally Standard Brakes, but strongly considering the CCB's based on your excellent comparison. 4. Style: Coupe 5. Z07: No Talk soon, Fred. Be well! -L.

Do you still think the Z07 is a deal at $22K??
@FredsFullThrottle
@FredsFullThrottle 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Black Widow, Thanks for reaching out. It's hard to say, and likely depends on the individual buyer. Not trying to be evasive, but a lot of the reasoning comes back to what's important to the person making the choice. I think that people making that choice probably should think about how they'll use the car, or what matters to them. For people who want the aesthetics of the high wing, they actually luck out, because they can get those looks without Z07. Personally if I could get the high wing, WITHOUT the front lip spoiler, I'd do that...but I can't. I would hazard to say (based on completely non scientific observation) that a fair number of people want the wing for looks, and will never track the car or drive fast enough to get an impact from the aero (myself likely included). For people who are true track junkies, I think Z07 does make quite a bit of sense. It'll definitely give you the most capable version of the car. That said though, my top thought on this revolves around: "How many buyers out there ARE honestly the drivers that can take advantage of those features on track?". 10% of buyers? I think that's very generous. 3%? 2%? I've spent a fair bit of time at tracks and at trackdays, and would say it's the rare driver with the budget for something like this, and actually drives hard enough to leverage it. A lot of people who get heavy into track certainly have all the fancy gear, the nice cars, the big hauler rig, etc... but as to their actual track ability, I haven't seen too many really flogging their ACR's or GT3 cup cars. The point for me, is if you go back to last fall and look at the Nurburgring test videos of the car, you see Z07 (or the car with just the aero, can't tell honestly), back to back with the standard car. They seem to be neck and neck throughout the testing, and driving a pretty hard pace. I'd imagine that even for most trackday enthusiasts, the Z06 is a more capable platform in standard form than most drivers are capable of exceeding. The limits of the car likely outpace the average person. Haha, all that said though, the real key is if someone wants it, can afford it, then I say go for it. I'm personally reasoning through my options, but that's in no way saying that others shouldn't just vote with their heart. Hope this makes sense. Thanks for the question! -Fred

@@FredsFullThrottle thanks for the thorough thought process and opinion. I appreciate the time spent on responding. For me I want Amplify Orange and orange calipers. Only way to get orange calipers is to get carbon ceramics. If I only option carbon ceramics its almost 10K. Half of the Z07 cost. Might as well go all the way

honestly man if you do upgrade anything it should be the trrim. 3LT is ridiculously nice rivaling that of Ferrari and Lamborghini. personally i think the 3lt trim is better than those other brands. Full suede and leather... double stitched steering wheel... you really dont get better than that

You know, I honestly hadn't considered 3LZ until fairly recently, but I LOVE the idea of a nicer interior, and am leaning that way. I have to do my homework for the next deep dive video (on the trim levels and options), and think that's going to push me over the edge. As long as I don't have to get an Alcanterra wheel, I think that's likely the way to go. Thanks for the suggestion, I honestly appreciate it. I don't think I'd really spent much time thinking about it (at least compared to other options), and your comment and a few others have got me thinking now. :) Have a nice day! -Fred

Good catch, didn't think of that one. Will be interesting to see how much lower it is. That said, I bet very few owners of either car ever get the chance to take it up to vmax. I've heard speculation that it's a 2-Ton+ top speed, that'd be cool. Have a nice day Mark! -Fred

@@FredsFullThrottle Yes, I find it interesting that a lot of people are about top speed yet they will never be able to take it there. I suspect the wing on the Z07 will take a good 15 mph off the top speed.

It is a track car. I will run Road Atlanta and when I had my 650 HP C5R-427 the highest I could hit on the longest straight-away was in the 160's. Handling means a lot more than top speed at the track.
