In this FC Adda, we bring together four screenwriters in Bollywood who are at the top of their game. They tell us if the industry is suffering from a serious dearth of good scripts. Between Varun Grover (Masaan), Juhi Chaturvedi (Piku, Vicky Donor) Himanshu Sharma (Tanu Weds Manu) and Saiwyn Quadras (Neerja) we get a real sense of what it means to be a writer in the film industry, the process of pitching to producers, and what we need to do empower screenwriters.

usman arif Hey Usman, Valmiki was an ancient Indian poet who had written the ‘Ramayana’, the story of Lord Ram. So what Varun meant was, not giving the due to the writers is an age old cultural issue. And this disparity is still prevalent today. Hope I was able to answer your doubt. 😊

You talk about Student but Dharma has a great collection of films like kapoor and sons, lunchbox, etc. It’s unfair to say that about kjo bc he knows how to make money through a certain type of films and invest the money earned in some content driven cinema as well. I feel he is great at the job he does.

When I heard Moh Moh ke Dhaage, I had to do a bit of research to find out who the lyricist was. Then there was this awesome film Masan! I knew who the director was, but did not know the lyricist of Moh was the writer of that brilliant piece of cinema. And then, I was thrilled to discover he is also the same guy who made a fabulous standup comic act on Padmavaat! Varun Grover is someone am currently in love with! Have a gigantic crush on him! I was waiting for this conversation the most and thank you so so soooo much Anupama mam for doing this! Just to add to their point, I always hear actors and producers saying "directors are the captain of the ship", "we need to empower writers more and all". I completely agree but rarely anyone realizes that writers are the GOD that created that world in which that ship floats and travels in. Jobs come from the fact that they wrote a movie so they do deserve a lot more respect than they are getting now. Definitely will appreciate so many writers a lot more now. Thank you Film Companion.

Maybe kapil sharma is a good comedian & just bcoz for the sake of running his show on TV he's doing or maybe actually he is shitty, u can't tell......

One of the best round tables so far! Loved every bit of it. They highlighted all the issues so aptly. And also I feel, it’s high time they get their due. Which fortunately is happening . I mean, I am the one who when likes a song, searches for the lyricist. ALWAYS!! Or when I like the movie, I search for the name of the writer. Not many people do that. And it’s about time these creative people get their due. And we need more of such round tables so that it reaches to the masses as an eye opener. Thank you Film companion. ❤️

being respectful, and not taking names... i recently worked as an assistant director to "this" producer- director who whipped up screenplays with English dialogues and would want translations to those scripts so he could shoot them asap... one film he wrote a night back, he got his assistant to get a person to translate the whole script overnight, and the very next day they began shooting the film. he finished the shoot in just five nights. being a student of old school making where we would work on the script atleast six months minimum, here was a man who wanted to churn out films like instant noodles... i worked with him for just 2 months. i wonder how such people get financers... while people who have worked on scripts for atleast a year have difficulties getting their films made. here im still assisting since 2009 feeling i am still not prepared to make my own debut in direction, trying to grasp sensibilities of writing and direction... and here one finishes his film making course... and viola.. he is churning out instant noodles?? this is another reason i feel content even with scope is coming out without any sense.

Only in India people think assisting can help you in becoming a director. In today’s day and age there is no need to assist. Making your own short films is the only way to learn filmmaking. Hardly 2-3% of directors have been ADs anywhere else in the world. And, yes you are right that people who don’t deserve to direct make movies because when deserving people are busy working on their craft, they are making contacts and doing all kinds of hustling to deceive people with money.

Karan Johar’s Dharma productions has been putting out great movies like kapoor and sons, lunchbox, etc. He directs very few movies like Ae dil, or Soty. And through these films he earns the money to reinvest in the content cinema mentioned above. He’s not a threat he’s trying. The fact that people only relate him to that kind of cinema is just lack of awareness.

vanshika pant Vanshika.. those 3 most famous songs of Ae Dil were remake of old black and white movies of Indian Cinema. you can check Asha Bhosle review on it. SOTY, Kapoor and Sons are good for eyes but there is nothing tht you can take out of theatre. There's nothing new in his movies. Actually.. they kno if the movie doesn't work they ll earn money from KZbin views. He is a show off thts it. A few movies are good like Lunch Box..and tht is how he should work. I hope you have seen movies from Drishyam Films.. Their movies may not be a blockbuster but they have the capacity to stay in your mind and that too for a long time.

Saiwyn Quadras is so correct. This video has got 1888 views. I have always believed a movies stands on 4 pillars. Direction, Story/screenplay, Acting and Cinematography. So it makes writers a 25% share holder in a movie. However we as viewers have no exposure towards writers and their works. Its not a great sign. Story telling is a complex art . It needs a person to expose him/herself to so many situations in life. Writing a story is not easy, rather it takes all the juice out of you. Here we see writers are so much in pain, that this round table seems to be an operation table where 4 patients are telling what they are going thru to Anupama Ji . I can see pain in what they say. Great explanation without using abusive language. This defines what writers are going thru.

Bollywood is a star driven industry. That's why they cast popular actors with shitty story in the movie and most of the idiotic audience make those movies Hit. Nowadays, relate able and content driven stories are need of the hour.

Not just content, the way movies are directed should also be debated.. Even if content is silly, the director should be creative enough to execute it .. the movies are shittily directed where every thing is spoon fed to our dumb audiences...Big Directors like SLB, Karan Johar, Imtaiz Ali probably cannot direct a story which is written by someone else.. The audience is also dumb. I cannot blame the writers as I don't know what wonderful stories they may have written but they never saw the light of day because no one's willing to produce or direct it...

A story well written should also be well directed and U think a country like England,US even Korea can produce such great directors and writers but India with a polpulation of 1.3 billion cannot .There actors are casted accrding to the role wriiten and here roles are wriiten keeping in mind the actors.Thats the reason u will rarely find dynasties in Hollywood.

Some of the issues that Varun Grover raised were quite pressing and legitimate ,especially in the end wherein he stresses about representation in the industry and also of the films which is highly skewed in favour of representing North Indian culture(read Punjabi) as well as also the background of actors who are mostly Punjabis, I am yet to cut across a film(not a documentary)which represents the adivasi culture not as a passing reference but as a full fledged theme of the film. The only film that did that was Manjhi and Newton but sadly enough it was an outsider's view. Moreover we need more people from varied backgrounds so that Bollywood becomes a space which is more true to the pan indian character as varied and as rich as our cultures and traditions are.

India's literacy is 74%. Education is key to understanding cinema with content. Global exposition is necessary to understand complex human emotions. We can simply complain that movies lack content, but we have to be practical that content driven cinema is not accepted in our society because the ability to understand and empathize is not encouraged in our society. Reading literature is confined to arts students and the current youth are reading mythology books of Amish, Devdutta, and books of Chetan Bhagat and the plethora of soft-core porn, amir garib, ucch Dharm neech Dharm, Hindu muslim love stories set in IIMs IITs Corporates etc... Firstly let educate our children and encourage them to read literature and expose them to different types of people, with no prejudices.
@Stephensofceea
@Stephensofceea 6 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. But one place I differ is that the younger, mostly urban, educated youth may not be reading good literature, but their movie literacy is pretty high and that's a good thing and I think that has started a small but sure change in Indian cinema
@sagarthorat9175
@sagarthorat9175 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Anna Marydas I think we are those youth and our movie literacy has improved because we get to see many world movies because of internet. I don't consider us as champions of Indian cinema. We always compare our cinema with world cinema and criticize it constantly. And that writer Himanshu is wrong that it was the same in 2015, 2014...and years before. Because of internet boom I am able to watch so many international series and so many good movies that Hindi cinema seems childish and gimmicky. 2017 was a disaster year for Hindi Cinema compared to years earlier. And it's not going to get better because even these writers on the current table are not that good compared to what's out there. It's cynical of me but that's the truth. These writers are good for the audiences who haven't consumed global entertainment because of language barriers. Take any picture from Best Picture 2018 Oscar nominations, which Indian writer can think of writing a movie like The Post, The Shape of water, Ladybird, etc. and which Indian director has a vision to direct such movies.. ? The last Indian movie with a vision was Lagaan (ofcourse some few more like RDB, Munnabhai, )... now none of the movies surprise you.. Not to discredit their work, they are very good but we need visionaries in writing, producing, directing and cinematography.
@Stephensofceea
@Stephensofceea 6 жыл бұрын
True. The writing in Bollywood isn't rigorous enough. For a nation that has created many literary giants like Tagore, Amitav Ghosh etc. its surprising our writing still lacks depth. And the very fact that people like you and many youngsters like you are breaking language barriers and finally started consuming good cinema and has created a market for better cinema in India. Yes, the movies these writers here have wrote arent cinematic genius that say "The Shape of the Water' or 'The Post'is, but Neerja, Piku and Vicky Donor etc are certainly strides in the right direction. The bar for a script being good in India is so low right now that these good movies seems to be brilliant ones to us. And as cinema literacy grow in India the bar keeps getting higher and higher. The very fact that producers like Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar are atleast talking about empowering writers are signs of a better phase in Hindi cinema. I am a malayali and this crisis hit Malayalam industry in the 2000s. But the cinema literacy in Kerala has risen dramatically and since 2011 the general quality of Malayalam cinema has increased so much that the typical "Masala", "Paisa Vasool" sort of cinema has become a rareity and not a sure bet in Kerala market anymore. ALthough, they still cant match up to the Hollywood quality of writing things have begun to look up and people actually started going back to the Theatres. I think better days lies ahead for Hindi cinema as well.

Really it is a depressing story of bollywood which claims to be de facto ambassador of indian cinema in foreigns. Actually bollywood had no tradition of making quality films except Guru Dutt,Hrishikesh . We are such a huge society- multi faced society, so much warmth so much colour. But still 99% directors deal with extramarital affair, college love , unneccesary songs and dance. These directors must learn something from hollywood, bengali ,malayali and marathi cinemas. Upcoming writers like Varun, Juhi must be encouraged. Hope sanity prevails in Bollywood otherwise i dont want fo spend my times to watch all shit bolly craps.

All writers, lyricists should make and maintain their personal websites and update the list of their works there. Sometimes you hear a song with good lyrics and are unable to find the lyricist even after searching. This way, at least the public will be more aware, even if the music companies don't give credit to all the artists involved.
