Some of you may not be aware of this, but on these modern machines the dig depth of the blade/scoop is set automatically to the millimetre, by the driver on the screen in his cab. I work in a cemetery.

My favourite Time Team was when they dug at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in the Lea Valley. (I live about 8 miles from Cheshunt.) They found, amongst other things, the remains of a malting floor, where barley is prepared for making beer. Malting still takes place in the Lea Valley: it has a smell like scorched coffee or chocolate. Amazing to think of an industry that's been going on here for nearly 2000 years!

He has taught in university, I believe he is currently a field archaeologist for Wessex Archaeology teaching archaeology students how to do field archaeology, digging trenches, proper protocols for digging etc. on actual digs, not in a classroom.

Looking for a spring, determined there is NO spring, then Francis comes out and declares yes there is, but there is no evidence of one.

While I do get annoyed at Francis with his always trying to find iron age/bronze age on practically every site he's on, I have to defend him on this one. He said he was wrong, there is no spring, the area was a bog with a stream, he even said they were both right about the iron age and Roman people were there for the water "But I'm also right in that the reason they came here was the stream, we've proved that now" and when Guy said there must be a spring in the area Francis flat out said "No, there aren't any springs in the area."

Phil is the Master, I remember one time Phil saw a coin covered in dirt about 10 meters away from him as they were digging with the bucket digging machine? Front end loader, O well It is a invaluable machine and saves a lot of time of course. Love the show but no digging for me let alone in the rain.

There isn't actually a year zero! We go directly from 1BCE to 1CE- but if you mean to ask when we decided to split history into a before and after, as with tonnes of qns, it depends haha. You could go by a guy called Exiguus who used it in the sixth century CE, but his system wasn't wildly used for a few more centuries. The Venerable Bede is also involved a little while later with his comprehensive histories.

I take exception to archeology in the states being eurocentric in focus. in Washington state, there have been indigenous people since 8000 BCE. the fact is that in the climate of the area and materials , little would be left of wood, refuse or any organic material. the notion that unless some stone buildings, monuments or metal working archeology somehow elevates the prestige of a ancient people is not only an unfair and biased pov, it is just bad archeology/science. i understand some being more inclined and, indeed excited by archeology that they somehow have a genetic/cultural link to, it remains that indigenous people often are marginalized by focus and import being placed on european culture, language and genetics. North American burial mounds have been torn down in order to use the earth/clay for european brick style buildings. remains of ancient indigenous being disrespected as they were ground up to make bricks for a a state house. please rethink mere "200 years ago" it lacks context and is heavily biased,

Have you ever heard of mini-mills? They are steel mills that use scrap metal, rather than ore, to produce iron and steel. They are of great importance. Another good example is the run up to WWII. One of the things the US did was to restrict the export of scrap metal to Japan. This was a huge issue for the Japanese who had no iron ore of their own. Even today, when we put out the trash, in an upper middle class neighborhood, the day before there are people who comb the streets for any type of scrap metal. There is a heugh market for scrap metal. Three decades ago I was moving and, sadly, had to get rid of an old MGB. There were people advertising $40 for old cars. Now I had stripped the car of everything but the basic body. When they got there they ended up charging me $20 for taking it away. Scrap metal is a great source because it takes less resources to create new metal than ore.

Who told you Japan has no iron? Sure they do, it's just not great quality, which explains a lot about the way they made their swords. They used a bit of good iron for the edge, and the lesser quality iron for the rest. People who buy cars for scrap want the good parts--it's a large part of how they make money. Around here, if you can drive the car to the scrap yard, they'll pay you a lot more--it costs money to run the trucks and pay the driver. I wouldn't do business with anyone only willing to pay $40...unless the car is completely trashed, it isn't hard to find someone willing to pay more than that. Of course, if you've stripped the car, you can't expect much from the buyer.

Certainly cars are stripped for parts, but then they are recycled. Even back in the early 1980s there was a salvager advertising that he would pay $40 for a car. When he got to my house and saw the MGB he ended up charging me to take it away. As I was moving out of town, I paid it. If you go back in the news you will see lots of articles about scrap steel prices going up when there is demand. One of the major sources of scrap steel is cars.

The Kingdom of Lindsey was an independent polity / Anglo Saxon kingdom for some time before being absorbed into Mercia . In fact after the Romans left it is thought it wasn’t long until Lincoln colonia assumed independence , called Linnius and probably retained its Romano British culture for much longer than many other areas. There are many villages in lincolnshire with the suffix “Wal” which refers to welsh or foreigner - so designated by the Anglo Saxon cultural areas .

It is because when iron gets oxidized rust forms. So basically oxygen is vital for rust to eat away the iron but when iron gets buried little oxygen gets to it so it remains protected.

I think the Romans would make dedications, and donations to the Vulcan God of Mars maybe thats why there so many small intact pieces of broaches and ladies pins, beautiful pieces of jewels? There was only potential evidence of two holes in the bowl. Even in their examples of hanging bowls, you need three chains or the bowl would simply tip. I can't believe they ignored that fact. It's a lovely bowl, but it wasn't a hanging bowl.
