I think you had better get someone with ground penetrating radar to go over the property just to make sure there aren’t any voids
@bludaizee243 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you can get someone out there with a LIDAR machine? Which is ground penetrating radar. To get the dimensions of the hole without any digging. My Mom's old property from the 30s had a septic "tank" it was a square box in the ground about that size and it was made with old railroad ties as well. The days before permits & all. Lol. Also if you do somehow get it open and it's an empty hole of some kind be very mindful of potential of gases seeping into it. They can be odorless & colorless & heavier than air. But can shutdown your breathing before you realize it. They often claim 2 & 3 lives at a time because the first person goes down and others rush in to save them not realizing. This happened in Calmar near Leduc years ago to some guys. It was very sad. But I'm sure you'll be cautious. Great video Alex! 💞💞💞

LIDAR and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) are two different things. GPR is the one you mean for detecting differences within the soil, but that would be most useful for mapping the entire property to see if there are other objects or infills around. LIDAR (Light detection and ranging) is used for topographic/relief maps bog or small. It can penetrate vegetation, but is rather useless within the soil.
@Bobbywolf643 жыл бұрын
LIDAR isn't really the right tool. It uses lasers for ranging, and mapping. Ground penetrating radar uses radio waves. Just a nit pick. And yes it would be cool to pursue this further. I think the most economical thing to do would just get an excavator to pull it up. He will have one anyways when digging the foundation for the house, so what better time to do a bit of extra digging and exploration.

In the first video where Alex showed the heavy timbers in the ground with the large galvanized bolts someone in the comments suggested it was the base for a windmill. So I went to a book that was originally published in 1910, "Windmills And Wind Motors". In the chapter titled "A Practical Working Windmill" they have a diagram for a "10 foot windmill", so not really tall, and describe the base of the structure: ...."Four 3/4 inch bolts not less than 3 feet long must be carried down at the four ends of the horizontal members, into pockets of rough concrete of 2 or 3 cubic feet each. The holes above the concrete must be then very firmly filled in and rammed, and if the ground is soft or yielding, a greater depth and more concrete must be employed. It is perhaps nonetheless to insist on the importance of having all this timber, but especially that in contact with the ground, thoroughly well tarred, or better still, properly creosoted, and all bolts should be galvanised. Large thick washers under the nuts of the 3/4 inch bolts are required." So it could have been a windmill that pumped water for livestock from the creek or it may have been above a well, so I would dig on the outside of the timbers if you don't know if there is a hole/well on the inside. The gravel on the inside is curious, gravel is usually used for drainage? so if you were capping a well wouldn't you use concrete or maybe they just used what they have? Windmills used to be common on farms in North America and were used to pump water for livestock, usually to an open air 'dug out', and used to generate electricity for the batteries that ran house lights and radios before there was an electrical grid system in the rural areas.

Maybe check with the title company for the land abstract. I was amazed to see one for a house in a major town that went back to a Spanish Land grant detailing every sale of the property including one where the land and building was sold along with five slaves all as a package for a price. Really weird reading material but amazing in the details it included. Hundreds of years of history on one piece of land. That might give a clue on the RR tie structure's purpose.

I was going to suggest the same. The abstract will give a ton of info. The hard part is locating it... Sometimes they were kept by title insurance companies, sometimes by attorneys, sometimes by banks. Sometimes by property owners.

I suggest you pop a card in the mailboxes of your neighbors. Introduce yourselves in the postcard & and let them know who you are and that you are happy to be living in such a beautiful neighborhood. "Please excuse the noise and bustle whilst the building is commencing and if anyone has any information on the property at all, no matter how small, can they please share to the email or FB page etc." You learn a LOT about your property's past and the people who owned it before pretty quickly that way, and if you use a postcard, you aren't doing anything uncomfortable like face to face for some ppl these days. Barring that, go to a local coffeeshop or hangout and find the oldest person around there and ask them directly. They will probably be flattered to be asked and love to chew the fat about what they know. :) You could even add a New Neighbor Discount on the postcard for %off at the store when they come bring the card in so you can meet them and they get to do the same and get some cash off some goodies. You would only be doing a small run of maybe 20 around that immediate neighborhood so the discounts would be limited to those cards and you would know them by the cards. :D

You're looking for older land surveys of your property which may reveal what the structure is and/or a purpose for it.
