I'm 48. And I'm considering getting into tech. I could see myself working for a number of years in the tech field. I think the advantage that us old folks can have is having experience working in several fields. Software development often exists working with other fields. I'm thinking like medical, fitness, etc.

I was shocked to find out that my age almost prevented me from getting my current job at age 51 after having more than 20 years of experience in IT and software development. I did obviously get the job though where my performance has exceeded their expectations but it is a bit depressing to know that this is actually an issue with getting a job.

56 and I'm not stopping. It's not the 500 no's I might get. It's the, "Yeah, Pops, we're ready for you. You bring the coffee; we'll bring that tasks." I'm not sweating my age because 1.) I can't lie about it successfully and 2.) I have life experiences that can help shape something like a piece of software to be young AND elder friendly. Did I just say "elder" to avoid saying "older?" I think I just did. Seriously, I think my chances are pretty good if I think about all the software I've been using over the last 30+ years and whether it has grown to be helpful to as many people as possible, regardless of age. And for that, you might need a little experience. Then again, my experience has been to bloom late into whatever I've tried, so it's not unfamiliar to me. You do you, no matter what your age is - and let numbers take care of themselves. Or initialize numbers to be an empty array. Whichever way you want.

Bravo Tiff! I'm a 66 year old DBA and not really ready to wind down my career. I started in the early 80's using Lotus 123 and Aston Tate's DBII/III on IBM's PC/XTs. I switched over to writing COBOL code on the IBM mainframes using JCL in TSOV environments for aerospace/defense companies for years. Moved over to the client/server environment where I picked up UNIX/Linux skills and was introduced to databases and SQL. This is where I'm at now and I love mining databases. And all of this...I did without the benefit of a degree, just blood, sweat, tears and an intense desire to better myself. Sure, I went to college, got my pre-reqs out of the way but life and family happens. And, truth to tell...I wouldn't have it any other way. If I could impart any type of advise, it would be: Be persistent. Keep that desire to learn burning within you. Keep up the good work Tiff, you are doing wonders for the tech industry.

It's far worse in software than in other segments of tech. I've worked in networking and server administration and then moved to development. The hiring practices in dev are the worst out of all of them. The testing is always based on "the google way" and specifically for wrote memorization of algorithms that are rarely used. You can eliminate most old people by simply testing for recent graduate knowledge that typically older people will look up when they need it. So if you're not a recent graduate you need to drop everything and find the books that the interviewers use to eliminate people. You can expect 5+ hours of testing for any developer position from a "google way" interview that jumps around to different aglos from the books, which is frankly stupid.

I agree. These tests only test memory, not your ability to think and problem solve. Most managers love to quote the "we need someone to hit the ground running" which sounds really short sighted when you think about it.

As someone who in my mid-50s jumped into this world, I am definitely concerned about ageism. So I deeply appreciate your video. And especially the part about networking. I doubt that pummelling Indeed or Dice with my resume will be as fruitful as it would for a recent college grad in their 20s. Another plus of networking: guiding you away from bad fits. Nothing more powerful than going to a friend who worked at company x, or knows people there, expressing your interest in that company, and having them say "stay the heck away from there".

I answered in length about this in your video "Harsh Truths No One Tells You About Programming" so i won't repeat it all here. Needless to say, I'm a developer with 35+ years experience packing shelves at the local supermarket. That should tell you enough how big ageism is in the IT industry is. I even removed all the dates from my resume, removed half of my jobs. Yes, I then get people calling me, but when they see me, I can tell very quick by the look on their face that I am wasting my time. So my answer ( my job provider recommended I do this ) was to screw the industry and start my own business, which I am in the process of doing. The last decade of working in the IT industry with all those needy backstabbing, work stealing nerds has been rough and I am no hurry to get back into it. In hindsight, I wish I did something like a law degree, where you're experience would be valued.

You nailed it and thank you for genuinely CARING about this issue and for being open to the fact that it's real. What's sad is that the computer industry started with the baby boomer generation and GenX, the people in their late 40's - early 60's took it AND RAN WITH IT AND BUILT AND EVOLVED TECHNOLOGY and our kids want to kick us out? Shame on them! Like you said, EVERYONE gets older. They may be older, but they are NOT old or forgetful or "useless". We have so much to offer and we're not afraid to work hard and put in the extra hours --- we've been doing it OUR WHOLE LIVES. We paved this wonderful road for the 20 & 30 somethings. RESPECT! And thank you Tiffany :) AND... we're not allowed to even think about retiring until we're 67 years old ---- we HAVE TO KEEP WORKING. The 20 and 30 somethings will have kids some day and they will also be 40 something, etc. like GenX, so they need to think about the big picture and respect where this industry has been and who built it and how what they are doing is building it for the next generation.

A friend of mine is a manager and hires people. He says there's nothing he hates more than someone he just hired leaving after a year or less. And younger people are more likely to do this. So he prefers hiring people over 40. He says younger people often think too highly of themselves and don't appreciate their job, because they think they can always go somewhere else. He says people over 40 have usually taken a beating or two in life, and so value the job he gives them more. They are also less likely to be on their phone all the time. That's just what he says.

I'm 42 and about to graduate engineering school from my state university in a few weeks for computer science. I was offer a software developer position at a major automotive company and it was the third company I applied to, so maybe I got lucky? I'd like to think that they value the fact that a new grad already has professional experience, albeit in pharmacy, but still, it's something that sets me apart from all the other new grads. I think that as long as you are motivated and willing to learn that age doesn't have to be an issue. And if your 42 and already have 20 years under your belt, well then I would definitely want you on my team!

Hi Tony! I'm 38 and just graduated with my BSCS. I haven't faced discrimination directly, however my sister in law works in front end development and when I sent her my resume to review, she suggested removing my earliest employment history which would have been a hint at how old I was. It's an unfortunate truth, but its not a stopping block , just another thing to overcome. I was recently hired for a government position where I think this is less of an issue. Honestly....most people look younger than their age these days so it's not tough to hide, just stinks that we would need to since there is a lot to be said for maturity. Good luck with your degree! I love this field....and thanks for the video Tiff! Love your content

You guys keep me motivated by knowing that I'm not alone in this journey. Team 30+ , let's go!... On a personal note I was recently hired as an IT Project Coordinator because of my age and the fact that I had a family. They wanted someone grounded and mature for the role, because all of their engineers are in their 20's with very little to no responsibilities. Guess being 'old' isn't always a bad thing.

I worked tech in the 80s and 90s. Back then, it was the Microsoft philosophy of work hard play hard compounds that felt like University campuses exclusivity that attracted young people. A young well paid work force is easy to manipulate. Working hard morphed into work all the time.

I work in AI and machine learning and literally 85% of the people in the entire company are under 35. In tech, you age out at age 40. It is pretty common for the average 45 year old tech worker to get laid off because they make more than the entry level person and they might have a family so they might not be able to put in 50-60 hours a week as younger workers can. Also, even the managers and directors are generally under 40. I actually almost never find any body over 45 in private (tech or otherwise), it's like you fall off the earth after 45 because most companies don't hire older people and today old and older really means over 45.

I had a friend that prior to working for Google as a software engineer he worked for Dell, they basically weeded him out because he was the young guy with great ideas. Then he worked for Microsoft and none of the older colleagues liked working with him. Ageism in the workspace is real because people believe "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" which is hilarious in the tech industry.

I read that with 400K programmers employed there is still a need for 1M more. Im 57 and was encouraged to get into coding or programming. I dont understand ageism if a person is capable. I know younger IT guy can be paid less. Is it also because older IT guys are nearing retirement? Maybe the healthcare costs(heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc) are too much for employers? It seems that young people have maybe 20-30yrs and then employees start to scan the next up and coming generation.

As an older developer ageism has always been a fear for me should I need to look for another job. To give a little background my career path in tech started when I was 29. I came to it form a background in banking as a teller. However, I always dreamed of being a developer. I got my nephew interested in tech and he convinced me to go back to school at 27 and I got my first developer job at 29. 23 years later I am now a 52 year old working in tech. My fear was that as I get older it will be harder to get jobs due to the fact that there is younger developers with new tech fresh in their minds. To overcome that I made it a point to continue to learn new technologies. I may be a little behind the curve on some stuff but I remained competitive in the workforce. Recently though I started looking for new employment in order to garnish better wages due to the increase in demand for remote workers. I had two interviews got, got very nice offers from both, and got a counter offer from my employer. I decided to take the counter offer even though it is a little less than the others but still significant enough. What I learned through that experience is that although there are your people out the with new tech fresh in their minds, as long as you are working toward continuous improvement you can still compete. The key is keep learning and don't get stuck in old technologies, or as I often say, don't let yourself become a dinosaur. A well rounded background with a wide knowledge base and progressive technology stack demonstrates your adaptiveness and can bring something to the table the younger people can't, experience.

In 2007 I graduated with my bachelor in computer science in software engineering, magna cum laude. I was 34 and applied for many jobs but got very few interviews and those that I got it seemed I was the oldest person interviewing. The few offers I did get were for much less than I was making working in a call center in customer service, and were contract to hire. I'm married with a disabled wife so contract to hire was not an option. Didn't think about it until about a year after I started working on my masters I got an interview with a major company for a position that required a top secret clearance. I walked into the conference room everyone was gathered in and the only people that were older than me were the hiring managers. All the others were 20-21 yr olds who were either in their senior year or just graduated. We were called in to be interviewed by the different managers, and each manager who I interviewed with made at least 2 references to my age, and asked at least 3 questions related to my age. Yes, I got the usual "What do you think you can bring to the job that these younger applicants can't?" easy enough to answer. It was the questions about whether I could keep up with the long hours as well as the other applicants, and other similar questions that made me wonder if the only reason I was called in was because I am a veteran. I walked out of there and tossed the clearance paperwork they wanted me to fill out in the trash. I graduated with my masters in 2010 and gave up looking about 5 yrs ago. Every interview I had has had elements of ageism. Not saying that I am a great interviewee or that ageism was the reason I haven't got a job but I definitely noticed it. In the meantime I have taught myself C#, Java, Python, and am currently working on learning full stack web development. Been working for the same company for 21yrs, not in anything close to my field of study. I'm 48 so it might be time for a change.

I'm the lead of a small programming team and when I hire people I'm more concerned with their skills and ability to organize and be productive than with age. We get all ages of people who apply and then fail the technical questions. I prefer an older applicant who knows how to code because they have all those years of coding and troubleshooting experience and probably spent time learning how to code well as opposed to just putting any old code down that works. A young person fresh out of college may know some newer coding skills but often they just code to make it work and don't think about organization or writing code that's maintainable or well commented. I'm 48 and haven't been looking for a job in 9 years so maybe it would be tougher in the job market these days but as you said it's probably not worth it to work in a place that doesn't see value in older more experienced programmers. Also as you age you find the health drawbacks of programming long hours and the desire to spend as little time as possible at work go counter to what some of these younger companies might want.

Great video, if not midly worrying (40+ and been at the same company for over 13 years). I think that companies that overlooks a person that has completed few more laps around the sun is the experience they can bring, which could mean the difference between a project failing or being a success. I am fortunate to work with a wide age range of people and it is amazing when an idea sprouts how the different perspectives help it come to life, which by limiting the age groups would be lost.

Is there ageism in tech or is it that because tech changes so much that if you don't keep up you find yourself on the outside looking in as you get older? This is why you should not take a job that does not offer training that they pay for. I've been in the industry since I was 20 and now at 46 I am being hired by Microsoft, one of the reasons I was sold on them is they have employee growth embedded in their culture.

It is seriously frowned upon if you are not in management by age 35. It is sad, but true (and will remain this way for a long time) that most people believe 'innovation' stops sometime shortly after age 30. Because of this culture, many boomers in tech (not management) who enjoy their work and had planned to work well past 66, are now changing their tune and retiring as soon as they can afford it. It is very challenging and somewhat humiliating to go to a tech interview where you are tested on 'college material' that has nothing to do with the job you are seeking. I have also heard managers say that they will avoid hiring older workers at all costs because it is uncomfortable for them. My advice to young engineers/developers is start training for management as soon as you start that first tech job.

Ageism is in all industries, not just IT. You know when people advertise that it is not too late to change your career or it is not too late to study, that's all false. Society will always follow the norm of hiring young people for the jobs. When you pass that age, you're shit out of luck to enter the entry job position.

As probably one of the oldest software developers on the team, I’d say overall tech (at least the top tech companies) is one of the most inclusive places. Not just inclusion for people of different ages, but the overall friendliness, kindness, acceptance of different opinions, etc. probably because in order to work on large scale complex software projects you have to learn collaboration and resolving conflicts. I feel that every time I encounter people outside of work (even family members, neighbors etc) there’s much higher chance of hearing something racist, sexist, ageist, or homophobic.

Hmmm. I got out of tech in the early part of the 21st century. Mostly sys admin and networking. I decided to get back in so I just picked up an A.A.S. in System and Networking Administration to freshen up a bit. I haven't started looking for a job yet because we're relocating next Spring but I must say I'm a bit concerned. I'll be 54 by the time I start sending resumes. All I can do is put myself out there and hope someone sees value in experience and perspective. I'll be lucky to get a job resetting passwords and updating group policy but if I have to start at the bottom, so be it.

Very often, it is coming from your co-workers. They might be young and fresh graduate from college/school. They want to hang out after work but you probably won't go to the place that you will be singled out. My friend who is older than me and he tried to get back to his original profession as a programmer after so many years of non programming work. He was lucky and found an employer who was a few years older than him. That's why he was hired.

The networking & data center installers are very old.....which is a VERY good thing. The Cisco & Cloud Certs can get people far. If someone wants to work in FAANG, they may face ageism. But if somebody works in the IT department for any company or building, I think the ageism is not as much

at 50 years old and woman.. yeah, I see ageism in tech. but I also seeing myself not working on IT security too long, I prefer in few years have another job after 20 years in IT , one thing I noticed is keeping updated with technology and certifications are a huge help, I only disclose my latest job experiences / education/ certification to keep resume short and with reasonable dates... still I think I will probably leave this field in few years.. just getting tired of it and want to work in something different.

It is not only about the age. I am 38. But I have a family and I did career in another area.. So it means making less money in another place, I am Industrial Engineer and I would have to quit my job to be hired as Jr. developer. I am passionate for coding , I did more than 900 leetcode questions, I have my own mobile apps published. So I would do anything to work with software development, but I do not want to affect my family. But ageism is really true, I did about 30-40 interviews with tech recruiters and software Engineers. All of them were younger than me.

The only challenge is that I have family so that makes things more complicated, but with family support and good organization everything is possible. :)

Agree, that if someone is ageist at interview, you really don't want to work with them. I have invisible disabilities, there really is not reason for me to bring it up prior to getting the job. I'm entitled to use the 'guaranteed interview scheme' where it's run. Contrary to popular belief this doesn't guarantee you an interview, it only guarantees you and interview if you meet the requirements of the job and someone bias can always find a reason why you don't. As such, I never used to use it, as I would get fewer interviews. However, after a few bad experiences, I now always use it if it's available, because it saves me a lot of wasted time in preparing for interviews, or worse getting the job and having to deal with people who assume I'm incompetent simply because I may have to do some things differently. Is it more difficult to get a job with a decent employer if you have a disability, yes, is it possible, also yes. I imagine the same is true of ageism, at least I hope so because I'm 40+ and learning to programme!

Oh YES there is! I've made a video about ageism in tech on my channel several months ago, but the point is: YES, you should absolutely be prepared for facing ageism when you'll get "old" enough. So you should think in ahead how you want your career to unfold. Do you want to become a CTO/VP of Technology/Director of Engineering in a great company? Do you want to start your own venture/tech business? Do you want to save hard and retire early? Do you want to shift from the industry when you'll get older? All of this is up to you, but you should be aware of the sad tendency and prepare yourself. In fact, I've started to think about "ageing" starting 30 yo, and I'm glad I did. Great topic, great video. And great crypto platform recommendation ;) relatable to the topic in a certain way, if you think about it ;)

Generally get worse when people reach their 40 &50, and when they marry and get kids. There are 4 route to choose from there, go into management, become expert/architect in some technical area, start your own company, and switch career and doing something else. Want to stay technical, become expert/architect in some technical area is pretty much the only way to go.
