My Little Pony Make Make Your Mark Episode 1 was released on Netflix as a special for G5 before the rest of the series comes out. A New Generation released earlier, and My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale has had several episodes released. Will MLP Make Your Mark hold up the legacy of Friendship is Magic? Is G5 doomed already?

Did you know that a panda eats 26 to 84 pounds of bamboo per day? Once again, I want to say that I love the creators of G5, I think they all are genuinely trying to make something special and care about this fandom, but just aren't familiar enough with MLP to do it. Believe it or not, I actually had a ton more points I wanted to discus that I wasn't able to get to without the video running way too long. Character analysis, episode synopsis, countless other things in the creator interviews, and a bunch more. I am not exaggerating when I say there is enough to fill 3 hours. A lot of my time was spent just picking what I believe are the most important points. Definitely put more work into this video than any other on the channel. Went through about a million technical difficulties with this one. But it's out! I don't want to continue on with all the negative content forever. I want to start getting back into the more positive stuff. (Mostly G4 content) But hey! Maybe the show will be good and I will have some positive things to say about it!

That is true, maybe they are having a really not so good start and probably will have better writing or story in the future. However if it doesn't turn out that way I'm not surprised. I feel like the only thing I'm interested in is how exactly time from timeline G5 got to that point, and the visuals and some character designs. They are pretty enjoyable to look at nonetheless.

I have shown my 7 year old cousin both and did not like gen 5 and said that gen 4 was better, and when I said the graphic looked really good in the movie she did not care. And this is a problem cause usually kids of new generation start to like the new things more then old things which we liked like lego ninjagos new seasons vs old seasons and old mario games and new mario games. But MLP gen 5 is not liked by nether fans, not old fans and not new fans.

It's interesting that for G4, Hasbro hired Lauren Faust by chance when she approached them for a completely unrelated project (that project was called Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls, by the way), and then she established the whole worldbuilding, character arcs, and themes that made the show what it is. They only started branching out into spinoffs and other media after two or three years, once the foundation was already in place. Now for G5, they started all these parallel projects from the beginning and it seems like there is no overarching plan for what type of story they want to tell. Gillian Berrow is the showrunner for the main animated series, but there is so much stuff that has already been established haphazardly across the different media that she has to take into account (or does she? I don't even know). And to make matters worse, they picked an art style for the series that is not compatible with the budget and timelines, and we saw the result of that in the Make Your Mark special. So even if she manages to come up with a good story with all these constraints, the visuals are not going to help sell it. So basically it seems that Hasbro put a lot more thought into G5 than G4, but they made it worse because they didn't think about the most important things. Kinda makes you understand why Lauren left G4 so early on, and how the folks she left behind were absolute heroes for keeping the show good despite Hasbro's best efforts to screw with it.

Personally I like the idea of Twilight creating the crystals, she thought ahead and into the future. "What if we're not around and something like this happens again? How long will our students last against this kind of devition? No! I won't risk it!" She then creates the crystals, after a long discussion with her friends at their once a month meetings. And peace was kept. After a new generation comes and goes, the new ruler of Equestria, after Luster, cracks under the pressure, and lets false friends be their guide. Under the new leader's rule famine spreads as does mistrust from the other nations. Spike tries to lead them back on the right path, but fails and flees, or is banished from, Equestria to go to the dragon lands. Smolder following shortly afterwards to try and help him get used to living there. Discord, meanwhile, tries his best to keep things from falling apart and for a few moments things look like they're going to get better..... unfortunately the new villans have Grogar's Bell and drain him. Fortunately for Equestria that's all they know how to do with it. He runs away to get Spike and Smolder, and manages to convince them to fight the good fight, and while they all manage to save the day, the damage has been done. The ruler banishes all three of them, thinking that they came to take their throne and shortly afterwards things reach the tipping point. The Pegasi and Earth ponies raid the castle, not wanting a snooty unicorn to have all that power to themselves. The Unicorns for their part, don't want the other lesser races to have their crystal so they take it and flee Canterlot for the forest, assuring themselves that someday they'll retake their old home. They never do. With the crystal separated things slowly go wrong, the Pegasi taking their crystal only exasperates the situation. They flee with it to Cloudsdale and created their own country, magic fades and things that once were stable in the sky begin to fall. They quickly decide to build their own city on the side of a mountain. The Earth Ponies get their crystal and flee, the paranoid leader thinks the other races will come for it so they order the construction of a lighthouse to hide it in.

Alright, I made up my mind, G5 is just an alternate universe for me, here's what I think: I like to think that the Mane Six and their friends would be able to seal that "mysterious pony" away, lock it in Tartarus, or reform them, no crystals of magic are created. And that G5 is just an alternate universe where they failed to stop that mysterious pony. In the main universe, Mane Six has a good life together in Equestria, with Twilight growing older, and her friends too. She prepares Luster Dawn to be her successor after she passes away, just like Celestia did to her. Luster Dawn and her friends rule Equestria together, the Student Six help them a little, and are also teachers at the school. Then, the Mane Six passes away, being in the memories of all the ponies of Equestria, for being great rulers and friends. Discord chooses to pass away along with Fluttershy, using his magic, maybe leaving some successor of chaos magic (he would be sad if Fluttershy passed away and he did not, as seen in the comics of G5). A stained glass (vitral) showing Twilight and her friends (including Discord, Spike, Starlight, Celestia, Luna, and Cadence) are in the castle in Canterlot. A statue of them in Canterlot and the center of Ponyville, just like the statue shown in the first seconds of the last episode, S09E26, but with Twilight bigger, and the addition of the other six. Paintings of them in the School of Friendship, Tree of Harmony, and the Castle of Friendship, where Luster Dawn and her friends would stay. Luster Dawn and her friends do things together, going on adventures, Sunset Shimmer and other humans from her world visiting Equestria, meeting the new group. Sunset is sad about knowing that Twilight, her friends, and Celestia passed away, but being able to go on, and honor their memory. Then, Equestria has some moments of peace, with few bad actors appearing. Luster Dawn declares a day to honor the memory of Twilight and her friends, remember them, and throw a party in Canterlot, Ponyville, and other places. And they lived happily ever after... Connection to G5 (how it should have been): Luster Dawn prepares a pony to be her successor, giving her alicorn magic, she and her friends pass away, being remembered like the Mane Six and their friends were. The successor, not being able to make many friends, fails to contain another mysterious pony from spreading discrimination among the ponies, and the three races split up. She thinks that magic was the thing that split them because they would not be jealous of each other if they didn't have magic. So she used her alicorn powers to gather all the magic in Equestria and create three crystals, one for each race. They could go away, but they would not have magic if they hated each other, the crystals have to be together to work, just like the pony races. But the races were already split and the crystals didn't get together, she should have joined the crystals together, and the ponies too. She failed... And resigned from her rulership. Each pony race has gone to a different place in Equestria, to start a city there. The non-pony creatures who lived in Equestria, seeing how the ponies were split, and that friendship is now literally magic, but there's no friendship, decided to leave Equestria, returning to the place where they lived before. The Pegasus, having machinery and scientific knowledge (in Cloudsdale, the factory of Rainbows), created the smartphones, screens, hoof readers (biometry), and other technologies. The technology in Maretime Bay is probably imported or stolen (as the races were angry with each other) from them. The father of Sunny Starscout gets sad by seeing all the ponies split, he has the memories of Twilight and her friends together in his mind. He had the hope that someday, some pony would be able to make the races get together again. For that reason, Argyle kept the Earth Pony Crystal in his house after the ponies split up. He told the stories of ancient Equestria to his daughter, Sunny. Stories about times when the three pony kinds were friends and lived together in cities, he even made toys of the Mane Six for his daughter to play with. He was right, some pony did get the races together again, it was his daughter, and she honored the memory of her father. (Then, the story of Luster Dawn ruling Equestria with her friends, and her successor who failed, is told in a Tell Your Tale episode, or "Season Ten" comics, after the last episode)

Only in the English-speaking community does the G5 receive a lot of criticism, in the Hispanic community it is still very supported, or at least we understand that they are going to combine some things from the G4, but that it is mainly going to be about the new generation, or that they are going to answer over time, the doubts about the connections with the G4, so that we can see the series in its entirety and not leave as soon as they answer all the doubts, but their complaints are also understandable, but it is only curious how different the thoughts are of these two communities with a different language (if something is not understood, I translated everything with Google Translate, although I don't know if they have that option to translate on KZbin, because it would help me a lot so I don't have to translate it manually)

I'm in this weird G5 fan limbo where I only rewatch A New Generation... aaaand a few of good TYT episodes. Mostly because to clearly remember the potential G5 had when we only had ANG for content. Make Your Mark truly has huge shoes to fill. Their most important requirement truly is, not actually consistent worldbuilding with G4, but just to tell a well-rounded story with a solid plot structure, focusing on telling interesting character arcs. Emphasis on character arcs. For worldbuilding, I think it's best that MYM ends up keeping it subtly told, instead of being the forefront. Remember when MLPG4 Season 1 mostly was about the characters, and worldbuilding was only just a decoration to add some flavor to their stories? Yes. Some. I want THAT level of subtlety. 🤔

For me personally the lore and world building of the original FiM series always felt kind of felt like a lower priority. I think that series excelled at smaller character stories than adventure stories that involved a lot of lore. Them not having a story planned out from the beginning does not really bother me because I don’t believe the majority of FiM was planned out either past like season 3. There are some inconsistencies in G5 that are kind of weird, and perhaps it would be better as a stand alone universe but I think if they have good character driven stories it can still be a worthy successor to FiM. Comic issue #2 was the death nail for me, as it confirmed what I've been dreading the whole time the series would do - pulling a Disney Star Wars sequel on it. The original cast was thrown under the bus to uplift the new cast by being better than them, which doesn't even make sense how it happened! If season 8 never happened and the SCHOOL OF FRIENDSHIP never existed, I could've accepted it, however, we've all seen in the final battle of season 9 that thanks to the students attending the school, everybody came together to defeat the Legion of Doom, even though they sowed the deeds of distrust between ponies. This same technique CAN'T WORK ANYMORE when you've literally got an institution that combats it. That was when the suspension of disbelief was destroyed.

I think you nailed it man. I haven't been paying attention to much of the official media lately. I gave it a chance just as I did Disney with Star Wars, but just in the same way, it couldn't maintain my interest. They've stripped away some of the most important core characteristics of Friendship is Magic that made it so special and desirable. To say one positive thing about the new series-- irrespective of amimation modeling, I do consider some of the _character designs_ to be pretty good. Anyway, I hypothesize that MLP G5 is one possible future of FiM caused by extreme levels of interference by external forces... or in other words, it's an "alternate universe". Yeah, to be fair even if I do like G5, I have to admit it's like...character assassination for an entire story. @Stake2_ 2 жыл бұрын
I like to think that too, they would be able to seal that "mysterious pony" away, lock it in Tartarus, or reform them, no crystals of magic are created. A stained glass (vital) showing Twilight and her friends (including Discord, Spike, Starlight, Celestia, Luna, and Cadence) are in the castle in Canterlot. Then, Equestria have some moments of peace, with few bad actors appearing. The non-pony creatures who lived in Equestria, seeing how the ponies were split, and that friendship is now literally magic, but there's no friendship, decided to leave Equestria, coming back to the place where they lived before. The father of Sunny Starscout gets sad by seeing all the ponies split, he had the memories of Twilight and her friends together in his mind.

But seriously though, the comics don't make sense to me even just looking at the ponies of Equestria. That whole "war" against the villains happened within the Mane 6's lifetime, so I feel like it's very probable that ponies remember the exact consequences of becoming divided. Ponies who weren't alive then probably heard about it too through family and school (it was a pretty big event, so I'd assume it'd at least be part of the Friendship school's lessons as a real world example of the power of friendship and unity). It just doesn't make sense to me that they'd let a singular unicorn cause all of that havoc with not a single reasonable resolution. If a group of CHILDREN can help save the day when Chrysalis used her shape shifting powers to put every creature against each other, I think a lot more could have been done in response to one unicorn.

G5's problem so far is that it using secondary media as a crutch to get around answering questions that should be answered outright. And it also seems like they're not giving themselves enough time to perfect what they're doing, as can be seen by the subpar visuals of the Make Your Mark special and the need to hire new animators after that. Tell Your Tale should just be a placeholder, not something used to get around actual storytelling. It seems as if G5 is intentionally ignoring the lessons learned from G4. FiM, for better or for worse, raised the bar for what the MLP franchise can and arguably should strive for. All of what G5 is doing would be fine, if G4 hadn't already come along and done all of those things better.

The year long gap between the movie and the series has always been weird to me, and I wonder if something got messed up behind the scenes. It's going to be irritating if the major lore questions are only answered in the comics. >It seems as if G5 is intentionally ignoring the lessons learned from G4. FiM, for better or for worse, raised the bar for what the MLP franchise can and arguably should strive for. Yeah. Not only did "Friendship is Magic" raise the bar for "My Little Pony", but other cartoons have raised the bar even higher. You can find multiple shows that have more intricate story arcs and are more willing to explore more serious topics than "Friendship is Magic" was. Yeah, one of the problems with G5 is lack of consistency with many things that feels disconnected from art styles to VAs to writing/stories. It's a huge mess for sure and just isn't all that interesting for me. And with inflation/recession G5 came during one of the worst times esp. with streaming services altogether are losing subscribers because of it. However, one of my biggest gripes when it comes to magic with this series is how they're not taking advantage of combining it with technology that basically give them an edge over G4. For example, scanning a QR code to summon a portal or reveal a hidden door, magically hacking computers or even hack phones to mind control ponies, an app that can detect magical signatures or entities, VR headsets and drones infused with magic. Heck, why not a villain that is a magically sentient computer virus. Also, are they doing anything with those Canterlogic robots from the movies? Why not magic them up as well? Such a missed opportunity and wasted potential all in one if Hasbro doesn't bank on it.

Canterlogic actually closed after the movie. At least according to the Tell Your Tale episode Alicorn Issues, which has a scene inside the now abandoned factory. Also, G4 already combined magic and technology sometimes, like Tank's helicopter and the security gate from Equestria Games. Not to mention all the stuff in Equestria Girls. But the magic is new to G5, and they haven't yet introduced a genius like SciTwi to figure it out. Maybe Izzy is supposed to fill that role? That could be interesting.

actually, the fact that the ponies in the G5 have cutie marks, despite the lack of magic makes sense, since there are two types of magic, the inner magic (that of the ponies) and the outer magic (that of the world ) for example, Starligth when he absorbed removed the cutie marks of the ponies, he only absorbed the inner magic of the pony, that is, his talents, but they could still fly and use magic, the crystal thing, it would be the first case of something that absorbs the outer magi of the world, that is that magic that allows you to fly and use unicorn magic, but the inner magic, that is the talents, do not lose it, although there are some talents that depend on magic to be able to be used

Speaking as someone who has only seen G5's movie, and *after* seeing the movie, saw the first four seasons of G4 for the first time, G4 was better. Yes, both had their hiccups, but G4 did a much better job at establishing the characters and their individual personalities in less time (a two-part pilot episode that was about 40-45 minutes altogether) than G5 did. I can't say anything about the rest of G5 since I'm not familiar with it, but if the original movie was that unentertaining, I don't feel any need to see the rest of it.

@@TheSultan1470 This is true, but movies can - or, at least, should - do better at giving their characters unique personalities than what G5's did. I saw a comment somewhere (on a video that I never watched in full) to the extent that an audience will probably forget the plot and setting of a story, but they won't forget the characters. G4's pilot episode snagged my attention a lot more than G5's movie did, and it was probably because they established the characters' personalities so well. As a narrative, the G5 movie did better than the G4 pilot episode, but if you asked me to describe the personalities of the Mane 5, my descriptions would sound something like: Izzy: bubbly and enthusiastic, more intelligent than she appears, but comes off as somewhat air-headed (not an insult btw). Sunny: Cliché naïve girl who tries to convince others of the rightness of her ideas despite her lack of evidence that she is correct; eventually wins through sheer enthusiasm. (an archetype that irritates me quite a bit) Zipp: ? Pip: ? Hitch: Male who is bashed to show female superiority? (not that G4 never had issues with that...). See my problem? Few of the characters had clearly defined, interesting personalities; the only things I could actually think of for Zipp and Pip were that Zipp felt uneasy about lying and Pip loved social media. Sunny, the protagonist, did not interest me. The only moment where I actually cared was when the Mane 5 were gathered around the campfire, and Izzy revealed that she came to Maretime Bay because of the message that Sunny and her father sent so many years ago. That was the only time that I really cared about Sunny. G4 did a better job introducing and differentiating its characters, even though it was at the expense of the narrative of the pilot episode. But I cared more about the characters than the narrative flow. I did see a few people in this comment section suggesting that maybe G5 should have done a show before a movie because that would have allowed more time to establish characters and world, and maybe that would have grabbed my interest better. But G5 failed to make me care about the characters, which is why I watched one movie and stopped instead of watching four entire seasons. Sorry if this came off as confrontational at any point. I like sharing my thoughts about stories.

I was thinking a story for the villain alicorn in Make Your Mark. One thing in particular was that the alicorn was actually a member of a secret organization who wants to get Twilight off the throne so that they can turn Equestria into a totalitarian world dominating supernation. The other was that the alicorn is actually a member of an ancient alicorn race who was sent to actually destroy Equestria entirely since the magic of friendship was badly parodying the ancient alicorns' zealous beliefs.

All things considered, it's extremely likely that the connection to G4 exists only as a way to keep the bronies on board and not out of any actual desire to expand on the setting. And you know the funny part? The connection to G4 was by far the most common complaint about "A New Generation". Out of all of the critical comments I've read, I'd say that around half of them were specifically about the feeling that Twilight failed and people not liking the tribes being split up again. This means that the movie likely would've been even better received if it had been an entirely separate story. I think the way G5's status as a sequel has been handled is an example of executives either not getting the appeal of the thing that they're in charge of or just not getting how people work in general. Anyone who's been part of a fanbase could have told them that "A New Generation"'s would be divisive in the fanbase. But as history has repeatedly proven and will undoubtedly prove again, being in charge of a billion dollar company doesn't mean that you're a smart person. I've never been hopeful that they'd come up with a satisfying explanation for the creation of the crystals or why the ponies separated. The fact is that G4's writers tended to stumble when they tried to deal with more complex plots and I figured the same would apply to G5. Maybe there are writers who could come up with better explanations, but they were never likely to be the people actually working on the franchise. One reason I've never been totally sold on the argument that even utopias end is because I doubted that the writers would truly explore the idea that the good times don't last forever. In the current comic book series, I doubt that the main characters will ask themselves "Will the same thing happen to our cities when we're gone?" or "Are ponies really destined to always go back to hating each other?" More likely than not, Sunny will bring Discord around to her way of thinking and any deeper implications about how quick the ponies are to turn on each will be ignored. I do think that "My Little Pony" is better suited for general moral lessons like "Don't lie to people" rather than complex political issues. The "Make Your Mark" series could be a great improvement on what we've gotten so far, but I don't see any reason to assume that it will be. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="743">12:23</a> I strongly agree with this. If I wanted a show whose only positive attributes are that it's cute and wholesome, I don't need "My Little Pony" for that. I could just watch programming for preschoolers. The reason I initially considered FiM worthwhile is because while it was cute and kid appropriate, it felt like something that had genuine thought into it, and had the potential for bigger stories.

I really don't like how they told Twilight's story in the comics, or how Sunny kept name-dropping every G4 character who didn't even have anything to do with the plot, just to show that she watched MLP:FiM. But for what it's worth, they do have this interesting exchange: Sunny: "I can't believe I'm here." Izzy: "I think you *can* believe it, and that is sort of the problem." Sunny: "I always saw Canterlot as this perfect beacon of friendship. A place where unicorns, earth ponies, and pegasi lived in harmony and nopony felt left behind." Izzy: "That's what you wanted to create in Maretime Bay." Sunny: "Yeah. But seeing Canterlot like this... makes me question how hard it would be to keep it that way." So I guess they're trying at least.

They know that their actual target audience won't really look too deeply into it and would enjoy both shows at face value but the Bronies who got into the story and got attached to the characters would be upset and leave the fandom which I assume is exactly what Hasbro wanted because let's be honest Bronies don't exactly have the best reputation and that reputation doesn't make the company look good.

It's really telling that a Fan working on his own was able to create an entire separate world of MLP set in an alternate future 200 years after the events of G4, has fairly accurate sense of Lore and World-Building that manages to connect their story to G4 and have it be believable, give a conclusion to the overall fate of six of the seven main characters; with only Rainbow Dashs' fate being left entirely ambiguous, have complex and compelling main characters that manage to work together in a group dynamic that showcases their values and don't come off as Mary Sues, and have an actually interesting story that can be talked about at length with a dedicated community that has evolved into it's own sub-fandom. This is why I will always praise _Fallout: Equestria,_ and continuously cite that the G5 writers had attempted to make A New Generation into their own version of _Fallout: Equestria_ without once trying to understand why the story even worked in the first place. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iquwgoZuqM-FjM0

Also, I really dislike the new characters. I was disappointed that they made the main character an alicorn... That also used to be special and rare. The characters were all boring, the unicorn was annoying, and a lot of the movie was cringe, like the random rapping in the middle of a song. I think all in all, G5 isn't bad per se, but it isn't good enough to bring bronies back into the fandom. Adding G4 into G5 isn't going to change that. If anything it makes the fans of G4 upset.

I remember that there used to be occasional complaints about Twilight overshadowing the rest of the Mane Six. That was one of the complaints about her alicorn transformation, people were worried that the show would treat her like she was "better" than her companions. When we got our first look at Sunny, I thought her being an earth pony would make it easier to avoid feeling like she was too powerful and the new cast would be on more equal footing with each other. And then they give her an alicorn transformation at the end of her first adventure. Shows what I get for having hope.
@58jharris
@58jharris 2 жыл бұрын
I always thought the uniqueness of being an alicorn was watered down when Twilight became one and it certainly was when Flurry Heart was introduced. Twilight should have at least remained a unicorn until the end of season eight I think. It would have been nice to have those extra seasons of character development without the wings. Season three was originally going to be the last though which is why it happened then.

At this point, I'm of the opinion that the movie was the best we're going to get from g5. And that left me feeling like I wasted my money within an hour after I finished watching it. The only exposure I'll be having to g5 from now on are the alt-timeline fanfics, the shorts which I consider inferior in quality to the g4 and EQG shorts, and video's like this one. Oh, and maybe reaction video's but I'm not sure if they are even worth my time. After the movie I was hoping for things to get better. That the whole g4 connection would mostly be ignored, that any problems would have started far in the future and that g5 would build its own identity with what happened after g4 serving as just some background lore. Instead, things got worse. There was a chance to recover. But it was completely ignored and thrown away. Too much focus on the visuals, not enough focus on keeping the foundation of the franchise stable.

i don’t think g5 is doomed just flawed. Of corse it’s going to be standing in G4’s shadow. I also hope it doesn’t last too long. There is this rule with cartons to go to 69 episodes and continue if it’s doing really good. My little pony n friends the first mlp tv show ran for 69 episodes. FIM Season three was going to be the finale but it was so well if continued for six more season but I’m not sure about g5, but I think it will go to that. I think g5 may not be the best generation ever, with some fixing it can come close and then Gen six can be a restart.

Equestria didn't fall on its own. It was destroyed by Hasbro through inexcusably awful writing and idiotic planning. The entirety of G4, with all of its characters and all of its fans, was betrayed by Hasbro. And Hasbro has the nerve to sell G5 as a continuation of G4 when it is a bald-faced lie to disguise the usage of G4 as fertilizer to grow the horrifying letdown that is G5.

The reasons why G5 is bad: -The Movie creator didn’t plan anything on explaining why this peaceful world of friendship turned into this shitty world -Too rely on G4, to milk on it, to nostalgia bait the old fan to grab cash for them -Equestria literally fall after seconds of Twilight ruling it, like is the 9 seasons worth nothing And all of this is tied into nostalgia bait and milking on G4

I think here's how my version of MLP G6 would be: G6 takes place after a million-year war between angelic beings known as Luxums & demonic creatures known as Noxums, where the latter achieved victory over the former & took over the universe. In this era, ponykind & the remaining Luxums were subjected into slavery by the Noxums, and positive traits such as friendship & harmony are all but punishable offences, banned & replaced with chaos, hatred & violence. The main character is Angelica, a unicorn princess & daughter of the late queen Galaxia who wishes to form a resistance group comprised of freed ponies & Luxums in order to liberate the universe from the Noxums' clutches, restore friendship & harmony & defeat the king of the Noxums, Grogar as well as avenging her mother's death. She also have to face Grogar's right hoof pony, none other than her sister Obscura. This generation will have things the previous generations lack, such as Judeo-Christian themes & references, thrash metal soundtracks & over-the-top action. Oh, not to mention Angelica has a guiding imp called Kismet.

It's not that it's doomed, but that Hasbro is not putting the same effort into making this something that I, at least, can care or feel interested about. It's more like they're expecting it to succeed just because it's MLP, forgetting the love, effort and passion that FIM had put into it. I just don't feel like giving half a about Hitch, Zipp or Izzy the way I did about the background characters in FIM, as a comparison. Will it sell? Likely. Will it be 50% as successful as FIM? Doubt it. Don't get me wrong: I want the MLP brand to continue. But it will not happen by "inertia". Not without the guts, love and passion that revolutionized it.

It destroys everything that FiM built up to, and shoots itself in the foot in the process, all the while failing to be any good in most regards. I hope the MYM series coming out later this month can fix most of the problems, but I doubt it. As for the comics, I haven't read any of the G5 stuff, and it's B-Canon, so it can just be ignored.

I really hate how people keep saying to stop hating and just wait for the series. Like we already have the movie, special, and shorts out (plus games and comics because apparently you need them too to complete the story), and if most of them are mediocre, then you already lost me. People seem to forget the fact that first impressions are important. If you fail to hook in an audience, then your show is likely to fail. And with all the inconsistencies in quality in all it’s mediums and the fact it’s a cheap sequel to G4, G5’s first impression is not looking good.

We've gotten more than enough to get a general feel for G5's style and tone. Though part of the reason I don't put much stock in the "It's still early" argument is because if season 1 does suck, then I wonder how many of the people saying "It's early" will admit it and how many of them will just move on to some other argument to try to dismiss criticism. Will they say "It's just season 1, season 2 will better"? If season 2 sucks will they say "It's just season 2, we all know that FiM didn't get good until its third season".

I have a theory about the Windigoes. I think when Twilight sealed up the magic (a decision she would NEVER make in a MILLION years, being as she's the element of magic and she's much smarter than that, that decision goes massively against character) It sealed up the windigoes too, and now Draconequi can age (even if still a very long time)...Their whole world should be unlivable in that time period since it takes pegasi flight to move the weather around, and takes magic to raise and lower the moon and sun. They just....really dropped the ball here, and it will always pale in comparison to it's predacessor...so I'm just pretending G5 doesn't exist. I saw the dang movie, really was not impressed, and I agree, I need world building and lore and actual interesting story. They had ONE good and memorable song and that was of course, the villain song, all the others were so forgettable and even cringe...when G4 did music like a proper musical and the lyrics usually had deeper meaning to how they felt and what was going on. It's just a movie to either distract kids, or turn your brain off for a while and waste some time and that's just disappointing to me...there's enough of those. I just...I can't get behind this stuff though, nah. G4 is where it's at.

The point of spin off or alternate media from any show or movie is supposed to enhance the lore or characters Once you turn an optional thing (like video game or comics) into homework then your series becomes flawed. I really would have loved the separation of the tribes to have taken place after Twilight or have happened after the other mane 5 had passed on, leaving Twilight having to handle ruling nearly completely on her own, which could have been the main factor for her to rush into making the crystals. No matter who you are, or how hard you try, you cannot force everyone to like each other, so her plan was doomed from the very beginning by trying to force every pony to like each other or lose the very thing that they built their cities with and even use to defend against the greatest of evils. In addition the Pegasi need magic in order to fly or even walk on clouds along side the fact they have a incredibly huge influence on nature, without it they'd all be falling to their deaths and cause a huge, sudden change to the weather and that's only half of the problems with the additions of Unicorns possibly in the middle of practicing complex magic or lifting something in the air. Twilight and her friends took a Huge Risk making these crystals at the cost of not only their subjects and loved ones' lives and health, but also the natural order of the world around them with how much influence ponies had in the surrounding environment. As shown in G5, if a small group of ponies get into a argument, it's all over. They had two other known societies of ponies aside from Maretime Bay, but because ponies in one town weren't 'getting along', they risked losing magic all together.

The movie, in my opinion was amazing. I watched it 20-ish times and already have headcannons on the continuity errors like my headcannon that foals with wings or horns have magic outbursts for the first year or so of their lives due to hormones settling and such so that explains the magic in g5. The special wasn't the best, the characters with the exception of maybe zip all felt way more 2 dimensional and hitch has a totally different personality! I doubt any of the non-netflix content will be Canon and more just stuff for kids or just to test the waters. I hope the writing will pick up the slack and make something as entertaining as fim deserves!!

Personally, I have a theory that many years let's say a decade after the final episode another threat came (the villain at the end of the episode ) and started draining the magic of all the ponies even the artifacts. There was a big battle leaving the villain sealed and Twilight badly wounded used all her remaining magic to create the crystals for the ponies and wanted them to keep the crystals reunited by remembering her friendship lessons. But rather then doing what was intended all the ponies blamed one another out of anger and grief. pushed the races away. The ponies also separated, and so after a few years created the rumors to keep the younger generation from meeting the other pony races. As for well Sawtooth Waves had a good theory that before all of that she created a clock that did the day and night cycle.

Twilight didn't need extreme heat to hatch Spike. It was magic based. I suppose you could argue that her magic created heat. But the challenge was to hatch the dragon egg using magic. It it could be hatched without magic, then the challenge wouldn't be Unicorn specific. Just because ponies don't have magic doesn't mean there is no magic. There could be ambient magic in the world. After all, Ponies don't always lose their Cutie Marks when they lose their magic. Windigoes are magical creatures, if there is no magic in the world, there are no Windigoes. You can either make the argument about Cutie Marks, or you can make the argument about Windigoes, you can't have it both ways. But I actually do have an explanation for the "no Windigoes". The Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi aren't fighting each other in G5. So they're not doing anything that would attract the Windigoes. And there's also the fact that the 3 tribes don't actually hate each other, they hate caricatures of each other. It's like if I hated Darth Vader for being a Hockey player. The 3 tribes may not like each other, but they're leaving each other alone, so there's no fighting that would attract the Windigoes. The Earth Pony magic thing is complicated. But you could argue that Earth Ponies didn't have conscious control of their magic before, and now they do. Besides, why should the movie answer all the questions? There's a whole series coming that can answer those questions. Technically, Tell Your Tale isn't canon. Technically, we don't know that Equestria fell during Twilight's rule. We only know that the seeds of doubt have been planted. Perhaps those seends didn't take root until after Twilight left. Besides, why is it a problem if Equestria falls under Twilight's rule? There's no reason to assume it was immediate. But the myth about George Washington began while George Washington was still alive. And Twilight has longevity, being an Alicorn and all. One of the most annoying things someone can say about G5 is that it means what Twilight did was for nothing. But how far into the Future does G5 take place? G4 is considered ancient in G5, so it could have easily been 1000 years (the show does seem to like that number). As for what you said about Twilight saying "the magic of Friendship grows", that's a quote mine, because in that very same episode, Twilight also said that Friendship is hard work and doesn't always work out. As for keeping politics out of MLP, I agree that "real world" politics should be kept out. But in G5, I didn't see anything political that couldn't also apply to G4 (except for maybe Sunny being an activist, which isn't even a major character trait). Also, in the G4 comics, they actually had an arc that had to do with an Election. Mayor Mare vs Filthy Rich. And not only that, but this comic was published in 2016. So technically, G4 for has been more political than G5 has. And what exactly about G5 actually has to do with politics? Because if you're talking about Sprout, that was satire. Sprout never had anymore legal authority than a Sherriff's Deputy would have. As for Bears, have you ever seen a bear with it's fur shaved off? It's not pretty.
@Star_Strike
@Star_Strike 2 жыл бұрын
All excellent points! probably the best defense for G5 I have heard yet. I appreciate the time you put into writing this. However, I still stand by what I have said. Dragon eggs do need extreme heat or magic to be hatched. If the egg is not hatched soon enough via heat, it never will. Those were the stakes in the episode: "Sweet and Smokey". The challenge to hatch the egg is still unicorn specific because they are tasked to use magic, not heat. It's like a screw driver VS a drill. Both do the same thing, but are different tools. I would agree that there was still ambient magic, if it weren't for G5, plus the creators explicitly saying ALL magic was gone from the world. Jose even stated they didn't have any of the fantasy creatures from G4 (which are partially made up of magic) to help make it clear that magic was gone from the world. If the windigos are pure magic, and nothing else, then that would make sense. They are referred to as "Winter Spirits", and that's about all we know of them. But I would agree with you that there probably wasn't enough fighting to cause them to appear. There probably never will be either because if there is even a little shouting, the crystals start going haywire. Earth pony magic is indeed complicated, but it is clear that they had some, and did at times have conscious control over it. For example, the increased strength earth ponies have is clearly something they have control over. There is also cutie mark magic which I would put into it's own category, but never the less, it is magic that earth ponies have control over. I don't think the movie should have to answer ever question. I think that by the first episode at least some of the questions should be answered. But to not answer any at all and just keep adding more? That's a problem. The longer it's dragged on, the more the illusion of reality I was talking about is weakened. Plus it would be incredibly disappointing and frustrating to sit through an entire series thinking: "They will answer everything in later episodes" only for that to never happen. I am not saying they won't answer these questions, but I have been given no reason to believe they will. "Technically, Tell Your Tale isn't canon." Eeeeeeh, not quite. I have not heard anyone on the G5 staff confirm, nor deny this show being cannon. If you have, please correct me on this. The show seems to be tying in way too much to the main series, even sharing the same plot at times and building on elements and points that should really be focused on in the show. Even the timing of the episodes upon release corresponds to the main show. For example, we never see earth ponies using magic in Tell Your Tale, but as soon as Make Your Mark comes out, earth ponies are immediately using magic. That doesn't prove 100% that they did not have magic before, but the timing is just too perfect for me to believe that. Either Equestria fell under Twilight's rule, or it seeds were planted, and she knew about it. She even created the crystals to stop the fighting that had started. Either way, she and her friends fail in saving the day. The reason Equestria can't fall under Twilight is because it undermines everything they spent their lives building up. 9 seasons dedicated to allying with the neighboring kingdoms, bringing peace, spreading friendship across the world, all to be undone right before their eyes. Imagine if you were given a homework assignment and spent countless hours working on it, only for your teacher to suddenly say last minute: "Hey! You know that paper your extremely proud of and would have definetly gotten an A+ on? I just decided give you a different assignment. Sorry! All your work was for nothing!" It doesn't matter how far in the future G5 takes place. it could be 10 years, it could be a million years. What matters is whether or not Equestria fell under Twilight's rule. Like I said, I don't think Equestria and world peace could last forever, it just can't end under Twilight's rule as that undoes everything they built. That quote from Twilight saying friendship doesn't always work out? True, not always, but wasn't that in the context of Luster Dawn needing to make friends? Basically saying: "Yeah, you might drift apart, sometimes friends don't stay close, but that doesn't mean it's not worth striving for." I am highly doubtful that what she was actually saying there was: "Don't get too attached to everything I spent my life building up as there is a decent chance it will all fall apart." Like I said, I don't think the movie got full blown political, and didn't even push any particular narrative. I was only raising a concern that the rest of the show might get political. I'm not super familiar with the G4 comics, but if they did get into real world politics, I would criticize them as well for doing that. I just needed to look up an image of a bear with it's fur shaved off, and I can confirm I am not sleeping tonight... 0_0 Also, thanks for taking the time to read this really... really long reply :)

@@Star_Strike There's a reason why I specified "conscious control" and not just control in general when referring to Earth Pony magic. Earth Ponies likely have a subconscious control. The point being that in G5, they now have conscious control in a way that was never presented in G4. In fact, I don't think it's ever been confirmed that Earth Ponies being farmers has anything to do with Earth Pony magic. So G5 may have introduced new magic. My main criticism about there being no magical creatures from G4 is the specific claim of "from G4". That doesn't mean there are no magical creatures per se, just that the ones we knew from G4 aren't around. I could argue that the fact that there are now Unicorn and Pegasi varients of normal animals could be magic related. But that's just a theory. The thing about answering questions is that I don't think it has to be done in a Special that technically doesn't even qualify an episode in the conventional sense. What we got in that special technically isn't the first episode of the series proper. I mean, it's technically an episode... but I'll stop digressing before I ramble too much. What I wanted to get to is the fact that many people want answers to questions that don't necessarily need to be answered. To reference the Doctor Who fanbase, the reason why people hated the Timeless Child arc wasn't because questions were answered, it was because some of the mystery was taken away. That may not be a good example, because Chibnall wasn't a good show runner. But I legitimately saw the argument that some of the mystery of The Doctor was taken away (despite that I feel that it brought up more mysteries). A criticism I can make about many fans to day is that they need any questions to be answered. I remember when some shows/movies wouldn't answer some questions and would leave things up to the imagination. One reason I'm not a fan of what the comics did was that they answered a question that could've just been left up to the imagination. I just hate that it implies that the answer to what happened couldn't have simply been time taking it's toll. To make a long story short (too late), I agree that some questions should be answered, but I don't believe that all the questions being presented have to be answered. Leaving some mysteries unsolved will spark the creative imaginations of fans who will come up with fan theories. The more that's left open, the more fanfics can be made without contradicting canon. I do remember it being said that Tell Your Tale isn't canon. The most that you could say is necessary is at the beginning involving the creation of the Crystal Brighthouse. And even that's a "take it or leave it" explanation. As for what you mentioned about timing, that means nothing other than timing. Just because Make Your Mark is canon with Tell Your Tale, it doesn't mean that Tell Your Tale is canon with Make Your Mark. Aside from the origin of the new playset, nothing in Tell Your Tale is impactful to Make Your Mark. Tell Your Tale seems to be, at most, in a grey area when it come to canon, or perhaps Secondary Canan, which is basically "take it or leave it". Secondary Canon is what the comics are listed as. *_Either Equestria fell under Twilight's rule, or it seeds were planted, and she knew about it._* That's a false dichotomy. Option 3 would be that the seeds were planted and Twiligiht was completely unaware of it (at least not until it was too late). Why assume Twilight must've known that the proverbial seeds were planted? All she knew was that there was fighting going on. Another problem you make is assuming it all happened all at once. Why do you assume that? Why couldn't the process be so gradule that the transition was imperceptable? For example, Republicans recently got what they wanted and overturned Roe V Wade. Do you know how? It's not because anything happened all of a sudden, it's because the Republicans played the long game. They've been planning this ever since Roe was established. Most Republicans who planned this out aren't even alive today to see it come to fruition. And it was such a slow process that it happened right under the Democrats' noses without them aware of it. The Republicans have been sowing seeds all this time. Another example is in the lore of MLP itself. And that was Luna's descent into Nightmare Moon. It was so gradule that Celestia was unaware of it until it was too late. And even if things did fail under Twilight's rule, depending on how long Twilight lives for, Equestria falling doesn't mean that Twilight failed. To quote Doctor Who, "You can save some of the people all of the time, and you can save all of the people some of the time. But you can't save all of the people all of the time.". It doesn't matter how successful Twilight was as a ruler, that success is inherently temporary. Perhaps more will be revealed that will prove me wrong. But until then, I'm not making any assumptions. I don't know why you assume I'm saying Twilight's lessons aren't worth fighting for. I'm just saying that eventually, whether or not Twilight is still around, ponies will start to forget the lessons that Twilight has taught them. And this can happen even while she's still ruling because Twilight can't babysit every single creature in Equestria to make sure they remember, nor can she force any creature to comply to her lessons without making herself look like a Tyrant or Dictator. But we don't know when exactly Equestria fell. But I'm not gonna make any assumptions either. I don't think the comics got overly political. At least, it didn't feel like Democrat vs Republican. But the role of Mayor is an elected position, so it was basically "what if someone ran against Mayor Mare?". And unlike real world politics, everypony was on good term with each other at the end of that comic. And sorry for putting that image in your head now. But when you mentioned talking about bears, that's the only thing I could think of at the time. If it helps, there was this one time when we were on vacation in New Hampshire when at the Inn we were staying at (the rooms were individual cabins and not just rooms part of a larger building), I saw a bear. He was still young and was just searching for food. The owners of the Inn took some trash can lids and banged them together to scare him away. But we got some pictures. the point is that he wasn't there to hurt anyone, he was just scavenging for food. And your welcome. If someone is willing to take the time to read my comments and write an in-depth reply, I'll take the time to read it. Ironically, the kinds of replies I'm more likely to ignore are the shorter ones that doesn't actually add anything to the conversation. I'll still read them just to be sure whether or not there's a point being made. Because a short comment that still makes a point is still making a point. I just hope you can forgive me for being a bit wordy myself. But you do make good points. I hope you don't think I'm trying to be argumentative. I can get passionate in discussions like this, but it's not with hateful intent. It's just hard to portray a tone of voice through a text format. How I see it, it's too soon to judge G5 too harshly. I mean, I haven't defended the part about the dragon being born with wings after all. The only explanation I could think of (which could apply to how the egg hatched as well) is that perhaps it's a different species than Spike.

@@changelingkingcocoon5029 I agree that some questions should be left unanswered. Keeping things shrouded in mystery can help create a sense of intrigue and wonder. However, when you raise a question about something that has already been established to work a certain way, contradicting previous cannon, that needs to be answered, or else the illusion of reality is weakened. Take Avatar the Last Airbender for example. The spirit world is a very mysterious place that we will never fully understand, and I don't think we ever should because that would remove a sense of grandness and wonder to the world. However, if all of a sudden Katara started firebending, I want an explanation because that contradicts cannon. If it is never explained, or even brought up, the story is not improved simply because we don't know why she was able to firebend. *Either Equestria fell under Twilight's rule, or it seeds were planted, and she knew about it.* The comic shows a direct confrontation with the pony responsible for the division. Furthermore, the seeds are the fighting that is going on. Even if Twilight didn't know how far the three pony kinds would take it, she never leave Equestria in the state it was in for the next ruler to oversee. The reason I assume all this happened at once is because the comic shows it all happening at once. everypony is very quick to turn on each other, the same way they were in "The Ending of the end." There is reason to believe this all happened under Twilight's rule, but I have seen no reason to believe it did not. Only the possibility is didn't. I could be wrong, but again, I only have reason to believe it happened under Twilight's rule. We are never told: "After Twilight stepped down, X, Y, and Z happened." *I don't know why you assume I'm saying Twilight's lessons aren't worth fighting for.* I don't think you don't believe Twilight's lessons are worth fighting for. I think we can all agree they are. My point isn't that it is realistically impossible for things to fall under Twilight's rule, it is. My point is that it can't happen narratively speaking, meaning it makes for a bad story the same way that if Palpatine killed Luke at the end of "Return of the Jedi" would make for a bad story. If the comics didn't try to mirror real world politics, I would probably be okay with them then. I see no reason they can't use fictional politics. I don't see you as being hostile or anything. I am not trying to aggressive in my arguments either, just sharing my opinions, beliefs, and perspective. Just imagine me saying everything with a smile on my face! :) I also struggle with conveying a tone of voice through text. very difficult. I was originally going to give them the first several episodes to explain the problems in the movie, but after Make Your Mark came out, it was clear to me that this was going to be an effortless cash grab. The movie clearly had a lot of love and care put into it, and you can see that in the creators whenever they talk about it. I didn't get that from Make Your Mark.

@@Star_Strike I agree that if something contradicts established canon, there needs to be an explanation. I just think we disagree that anything has contradicted established canon. Or perhaps we disagree on what qualifies as established canon. The only "direct confrontation" seen was between the pony "planting the seeds" and Fluttershy. When I say Twilight may not be aware of it, I mean that she may not be aware that someone was intentionally planting seeds of doubt. When Twilight (and the rest of the Mane 6, since according to Discord, it was a team effort), created the three crystals, things returned to peace. Also, the fighting wasn't the seeds, the fighting was the result of the seeds taking root. Saying Twilgiht wouldn't have passed down the rule of Equestria in a bad state onto the next ruler implies that there's a choice in the matter. It has never once been established that Alicorns are immortal. So no matter how long Twilight lives for, she does have a finite lifespan. Perhaps Twilight never found a suitable successor to the throne before it was too late. Or perhaps she never intended there to be a next ruler. With the nature of how the crystals work, either the ponies will work together, not needing the intervention of a ruler anymore, or they won't work together, insuring that regardless of who's in charge, even if that's Twilgiht herself, that ruler's power would be nothing more than political power, seeing as if the three tribes aren't working together, the magic will stop working, and all ponies, including alicorns, will be on an equal playing field when it comes to power. So either the ponies have to work together, they'd have to become self-sufficient without magic, or they'd destroy themselves without magic. Regardless of which scenario happens (which we can see wasn't the worst case scenario and resulted in the self-sufficient route at some point), it would make a monarchy obsolete. Also, either Discord doesn't know/forgot how the crystals work, or the writers of the comics don't know/forgot how the crystals work. Because peace is necessary for the crystals to work. If peace can only exist without magic, then the crystals will automatically stop working when that peace ends, thus automatically taking away magic. So there was no reason for Discord to have to take one of the crystals. And the crystals are strict enough that there's little wiggle room. And if it's the case that the writers are at fault and not just Discord being written that way, then whatever issues the comics present don't matter, because the comics are only Secondary Canon. If the comics contradict the Main Canon, then they can be disregarded as non-canon. Also, the comics did NOT show that it happened all at once. They explicitly said that things progressed over many moons. And that wasn't referring to the fall of Equestria. I mean, I suppose it was _a_ fall, but it wasn't _the_ fall that lead to G5. And it certainly wasn't a fall of Equestria itself. Otherwise Equestria would no longer exist in G5 outside of history books. Saying that narratively things can't fall under Twilight's rule ONLY apply to G4, because that was specifically Twilight's story. I've heard criticisms as to why the Mane 6 don't get the heroes welcome they deserve considering that they're the bearers of the Elements of Harmony, stopped Nightmare Moon, brought back Princess Luna, stopped Discord, etc, etc. The answer is, how many ponies actually know about these details? There are only 8 Ponies who witnessed the defeat of Nightmare Moon and return of Luna. Nobody outside of Ponyville or the Princesses would be aware that the Mane 6 defeated Discord... it's not until the Season 4 Finale that there's good reason to believe ponies would recognize the Mane 6 more widely. Because G5 is no longer Twilight's story, there's no narrative contradiction if there's a fall during Twilight's rule. Since it's no longer Twilight's story, Twilight no longer has the Plot Armor that she had in G4. So to use your Star Wars analogy, it's not like if Palpatine had killed Luke at the end of Return of the Jedi, because even with your analogy, Return of the Jedi would've already been done and over with before Luke dies. Becaues even in the flashback scenes in the comics, they take place AFTER the events of The Last Problem. What exactly do you mean by "fictional politics"? I didn't mean to make that sound like I was accusing you of thinking the wrong thing about me. It's just that this is the internet, and the internet is a breeding ground for toxicity, even among people who mean well. Because even positivity can be made toxic. You'd be surprised at how many people would look at our conversation and assume we're fighting with each other. Then again, maybe you wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't assume anything yet just from the Make Your Mark special. Can I assume you'll still give G5 a chance? Because how I see it, your expectations are low, so the worst case scenario is that Make Your Mark meets your expectations. Best case scenario is that you'll be pleasantly surprised. But in my opinion, your opinion of it being an effortless cashgrab is a bit skewed. The movie had the love and care it got because it's a movie that had a higher budget than a TV show and more time to put into productiontion. Even how you write a script for a movie wouldn't be the same as for a TV show. And not only that, you're comparing movie quality effort with literally a first episode of a TV show (not even a "first episode" in this case). G4 was also a cash grab. And if Hasbro has learned anything from G4, it's that they will make significantly more money if they put in the effort. So I doubt G5 will just be an "effortless cash grab".

Loved reading through your comments, felt like someone was on the same page lol. I'm personally feeling like what amoumt adult fans remained went into G5 expecting well-rounded disappointment and so it immediately shaped a LOT of opinions I've seen circulated. Some even can be applied to G4 objectively too, but for some reason (rose tinted glasses lol) it's not discussed in any comparisons. Either way, I think a huge thing is the following points: - It will not be perfect, G4 was far from perfect, accept it. - It is a series targeting preschoolers, in a new medium, it's not going to cater to the adult fanbase exclusively (heck, it's impossible to when "what fans want" seems to be a completely mixed bag ... I'm convinced however many fans don't know what they actually want?) especially when said fanbase has been taking a dump on it since day one. - Jumping off the previous point; people need to give it an actual chance..! What's with all the conclusive opinions, like somehow we can tell the future? 😅

Okay but if you’re saying G5 has “politics” you can’t say G4 DIDN’T. The “sharing is caring” episode you used as evidence directly references indigenous people having their land stolen (its not exactly done WELL, but it’s there). A huge segment of the show is literally saying “don’t be racist” with the griffons yaks etc. Agree with the “political messaging” or not it’s still there and can’t really be used as a slight against G5 when both shows have these sorts of “political” messaging. I think it’s more of a “have basic human decency and let everyone live their lives and have their culture without being shitty to each other” message than a “political” message but you get my point.
