There was only one good part of that terrible movie. When the young British officer comes up to Gibson and thanks him for medically treating the British soldiers as well as the American ones. When he came up and thanked Gibson for caring for his majesties soldiers I was blown away. Then they had to ruin it with that cavalry officer dude coming up and immediately reversing that and shooting all the American soldiers and chastising Gibson for helping the Americans. I rolled my eyes so hard... But kudos for the British officer being a genuinely kind and caring officer for his men.

Murdering prisoners/burning down farms and houses did happen in the Southern Theater......but it wasnt ever done by the British army. Patriot and Loyalist militias are a different story though. 15:30 This is exactly how I learned it in grade school too. Born in '97 for reference. There was no explanation as to why the British fought in line, light infantry tactics were portrayed as obviously superior. British crimes were exaggerated, American crimes downplayed. @CruelestChris 2 жыл бұрын
Most of all the history you learn in school is propaganda. Try looking into the rabbit hole of what was actually happening with Galileo and how strictly speaking the church was the one doing good science, for example.
@termitreter6545
@termitreter6545 2 жыл бұрын
@@CruelestChris You think western schools do anti-church propaganda? Let alone american schools? I dont even know how extreme you gotta be to think the church is treated unfairly. Doubly so with Galileo. No matter how you wanna argue everything was church politics and peopes funded research into heliocentrism at some points, the reality was that criticising the churchs model of the world was dangerous and an accepted reason for a trial. Even saying "earth orbits the sun" after his deal would mean execution. And thats almost 200 years after copernicus. So make a point, what was "actually" happening with Galileo? As far as I can see, there is a threat of death for disagreement, as well as the church pushing outdated concepts for religious reasons. Thats not good science.
@CruelestChris
@CruelestChris 2 жыл бұрын
@@termitreter6545 Well, here goes... Copernicus comes up with a model that isn't actually any simpler than Ptolemy's. The nice set of circles you've probably seen isn't his model, it's a diagram outlining the "spheres" the planets roughly reside in before he gets down to describing how it actually works. Copernicus correctly describes his work as a model: he has nothing that actually proves the Earth is moving, nor any idea of _how_ it would be moving since we're well before Newton here. Here the church...does nothing. We have writings from the time that make it clear they don't mind this idea being circulated as long as it's treated as a hypothesis. See, at this point in time the church's prevailing policy isn't that science is its enemy: that's later, a reactionary movement during the Enlightenment that came about among American Protestants. Right now, the policy is that the Bible is a book of moral and spiritual guidance that incorporates some truths about the nature of the universe, but that's not its primary purpose. Therefore, if solid data contradicts the apparent word of the text, it likely means that we, as fallible humans, are misinterpreting the text. Now along comes a guy called Tycho Brahe. He spends a fair portion of his life constructing a new set of data tables to replace the ones with hundreds of years of copying errors in use at the time, and with this more accurate data he works out a new model. This is what's called a geoheliocentric model: the Earth is stationary, the moon and sun orbit the Earth, but everything else orbits the sun. This is so close to being right that it generates extremely accurate results, and is broadly accepted as the better model of the solar system. So, why not heliocentrism? Well, there's a broad series of objections, but the one that's held the most sway through all the centuries is a thing called stellar parallax. The argument is that if the Earth is indeed circling the sun, then as a year progresses the "sphere of fixed stars" should shift position relative to one another from an observer's perspective on Earth. But this can't be observed with the equipment they have access to, and indeed wouldn't be observed for centuries. Astronomers have calculated that in order for there to be no visible parallax, the distance to the nearest of the sphere of fixed stars would have to be 700 times the orbit of Saturn, and at their apparent size some of these stars would be larger than the orbit of Earth. But wait, you say, the stars _are_ more than that distance away. Correct, but at this point everyone on both sides accepts the purpose of the universe is to contain Earth, and the heliocentrists are forced to go for the lame "well, you don't know God's plan" fallback as to why in the world the universe would be laid out this way. Further, they're invoking these ideas to save their model, not because they have any data that supports the idea that the stars are extremely far away. "It's like that because my model requires it to be like that" is bad science. So, along comes Galileo. He's got a variation of Copernicus' model, and the Pope is actually interested in this and asks him to write a work which lays out the theories of the day and their relative points for and against. What Galileo actually does is write a work which places the prevailing arguments in the mouth of an unflattering caricature of the Pope he calls Simplico ("simpleton"), completely ignores Tycho's model and only addresses the obsolete model of Ptolemy, and hangs all of this on an argument related to the origin of the tides that he's already been told multiple times is demonstrably incorrect (which it is). So, Inquisition isn't happy with this. They commission an expert to look into the matter, Franscesco Ignoli, and he compiles a list of 22 arguments against heliocentrism: 4 are based on theology, the other 18 on astronomy or mathematics, and Galileo is specifically told to focus on those. He fails to make a good case for himself, and the Inquisition bans his book and places him under house arrest. But bans it only in its current form, the one that insults the Pope: it can be re-published subject to review if the content is changed. You might note they go on to do absolutely nothing when Kepler publishes his work making a solid case for a heliocentric system later, because Kepler is treating his theory as a theory rather than a fact. So basically this was more extreme form of peer review. I believe the only person anyone can point to being executed for something _related_ to this was Bruno, and he wasn't executed for saying the Earth orbits the sun, but for a variety of weird spiritual beliefs he had: if you look into him, he was basically the period equivalent of one of those hippies who uses the word "quantum" to sound smart. The reason it's blown so out of proportion relates to successive ages enjoying bragging about how much smarter they were than the preceding ages, similar to the ridiculous assertion that the church widely held the view that the Earth was flat in Columbus' time.
@termitreter6545
@termitreter6545 2 жыл бұрын
@@CruelestChris First of all, regardless how far I agree or not, I appreciate the etensive writeup. Ive actually taken a 2nd look myself at Copernicus story, to see what I missed. And I did miss somethings, but theres parts where I disagree. I think the first part about heliocentrism being hard to proof is a bit weak as an argument. After all, what is the evidence for geocentrism? Not much, after all, its just that the church took over that kidn of greek theory, and then it was considered the churchs standard. The bad science is the assumption that earth is geocentric. Assuming a standard when youre at best ignorant. I suspect that was a) because the church didnt want to be seen as clueless about the relation of earth and sun, and b) it did have weight because it was the churchs postion. When people say the church was actually big into science, thats not entirely wrong, but often leaves out that they had a near monopoly on science in europe, there wasnt much else funding. And their less rational choices did sometimes cause harm to science and sometimes scientists. Galileo is interesting. Him promoting heliocentrism was politically risky from the get go, but he mostly got through with it because he had connections to the pope and cardinals. That protected him all the way. And he did write books about heliocentrism before the caricature youre talking about. Except even the pope, who was originally friendly to Galileo, wouldnt accept. Apparently argueing heliocentrism was more likely than geocentrism was the problem. So those books were banned and Gelileo was under lethal threat of not publishing anything of that. Later he then wrote the caricature, which ended in him being forced to revert his position (again under threat of death) and lifelong house arrest. As far as I can see, the conclusion is a bunch of points against the church: ->The church held a monopoly on science, but put arbitrary limits on what was to be researched or claimed. Galileo was only allowed to do his things because of personal contacts at the start. ->The popes personal opinion played a big role, and he wouldnt allow a book tha claimed he was wrong. At best he'd accept a book treating both helio/geocentrism as equally viable. ->In fact, while the church funded research into heliocentrism, their positions and support of heliocentrism wasnt backed by research either. ->To not follow the church rules, was, at least under some circumstances, to be under threat of imprisonment, torture or death. I cant agree that this was a "peer review", especially because the church refused to truly review their own positions, which were evidently incorrect. They held a monopoly on science and sometimes used it to limit knowledge, intentionally or not. Frankly, I dont even think the church became more conservative towards science. The pope still disagrees reguarly with the modern world. What rather happened is that science and rational thinking became much more widespread, escaping the grasps of the church. And when the church can supress science they dont like, there is conflict. I think one last comment I'd like to make is that nothing of this is surprising, it makes sense if you consider what the church is. The catholic church wasnt some superhuman instrument of god, it was a worldly institution manned by fallible people. It constantly got itself drawn into political conflicts, especially during the enlightenment. There was much corruption, and why wouldnt there be? The church was jury, judge and executioner, you dont get objectivity in positions that powerful. The catholic churchs split was a direct result of the hypocrisy and corruption of the church. Such an institution can not be a reliable source of science. Its just impossible, its not how humans work. Theres a reason the "scientific method" requires like 10 layers of abstraction, to weaken all bias.

@@termitreter6545 No, your first point there is fundamentally incorrect. That the Earth appears stationary from a human frame of reference is a given, and they could also take any part of the Earth and see that it did not move unless acted upon. Therefore, the claim that the Earth was imperceptibly moving at incredible speed was the one requiring evidence: some observation which required this assumption in the first place (nobody had one), and then a cohesive argument as to what force could be causing this. Bear in mind that the entire theory of physics at the time was built around these assumptions: gravity existed because earth-elemental objects tended to move towards the centre of the universe, while the planets moved because they were made of a different substance (I believe it was aether at one point) which had a fundamental quality of being in motion. Throwing all this out and replacing it with _nothing_ was unworkable: we do this too, we know Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity can't both be right, but we use them anyway. It wasn't until Kepler and Newton were combined that a coherent alternative emerged. Arguing it was more _likely_ was never the problem. Copernicus did that and nobody cared. What the Inquisition cared about was that Galileo went the further step of arguing it was a physical fact rather than a model or hypothesis. His evidence wasn't nearly enough to do that: he had no mechanism for how his system could happen, no observations which worked against anything but the already-discarded ancient system of Ptolemy (every other system could account for the phases of Venus, not just his), and a raft of objections he could only address with ad-hoc additions he couldn't offer evidence for. And yes, it was a peer review. Science isn't about _guessing_ what's correct, it's about going where the evidence leads you. In this case, performing it correctly, due to issues with observation at the time, meant doing it correctly led to an incorrect conclusion. This is one of the more interesting aspects of studying this period. Also, the Catholic church did not hold a monopoly on science. The simple observation that Johannes Kepler was a Protestant, as well as the fact that the Church of England had been established before Galileo was even born and yet science was still happening in England, shows that to be untrue.

Combining aspects of real people is a standard thing in historical fiction. It's often a central part of the fiction half of the subgenres name. Movies are an art. Judging them by facts isn't really fair. The Patriot is not a documentary. It made no claim of being historically accurate and authentic. Would somebody make the claim that Van Gogh's or Picasso's works are an abomination because they are unrealistic and don't represent the real world? That was never the artists intention. Personally I am not a fan of Piccasso's cubism works, but I respect his intention and certainly don't criticise it because its not photo-realistic. I mean I could understand the criticism if 'The Patriot' claimed to be historically accurate, but this is Hollywood, they don't really make movies like that nor do they claim to. They make entertaining pieces of art, much like how someone would visit an art gallery and enjoy the visuals, same can be done in a cinema. If people want facts and accuracies, there is a whole department of film making dedicated to that called Documentaries. I struggle with these reviews when its the reviewer applying authenticity and not the movie maker. That's unfair judgement. Like the film or don't like the film, but to judge it by standards that were never intended is dishonest and unfair.

Your comments on bouncing cannon balls brought back a childhood memory. I had a boardgame that had a cannon that fired a shot that bounced its way across the map. On each hex, you rolled to see if it did a glancing hit for one damage, a direct hit for an instant elimination, or if it bounced clear over the hex. I thought it was so weird, because I didn't know any better. I'm amazed a kid friendly boardgame from the 90s did cannon balls relatively accurately. Now if only I remembered the name of it. It was a humans for orcs kinda thing. Edit: It was Battle Masters

I not only was misinformed about history, but actively didn't care and ignored it. I'm more into Classical to medieval history, but I lived in your shoes to, I swear. School had me convinced of not only that exact narrative of the revolution, but that even in a world history class, from 10,000 BC to 1492 AD happened in the blink of an eye, nothing happened here, Rome existed, 'the greeks' ruled the middle east, medieval people were dim, and then the entire rest of the year is the same American stuff I've learned every year since the first. What's even more hilarious is that after middle school, there was no more fleshing out of that history, same crap. After all of school, weeks after actually, I wanted to reinvigorate my Rome Total War campaign. Just mod it, and Europa Barbarorum was my choice. Buildings, time period, people, units and more all had extensive explanations and historical backgrounds. Spent hours reading it all. Starting new campaigns just so I could read of the different units, buildings, etc. I think, just a theory, that school, movies, the bad 'documentaries' are so simple and generalized because they just think we're to stupid to even conceive that it would be more nuanced. "Fighting in lines was stupid" "Romans are the red ones" "Peasants ate cabbage soup" "Armor doesn't matter" That, or it's a conspiracy to keep people stupid, but tin foil hats are a little to bold for me Shame too, had 1 teacher try to squeeze in everything she could on WW2, made it really interesting and fleshed out, she would spit out some facts about places she had visited whenever our lesson passed by it.

There’s something that struck me about Martin, Charlotte & their cute little baby at the end... I know there’s no direct statement that they married, but it’s strongly implied by the cultural mores of the time... thing is- it *wouldn’t* have been legal; I’m an aspiring historical fiction writer & the importance of *research* CANNOT be overstated - an article I read years ago, by an author (I cannot recall her name) listed things she had had problems with in historical fiction- she talked about things like people ignoring entail, & having heiresses personally managing large inheritances - but the relevant one: a man marrying his deceased wife’s sister (it could be easily vice versa)- this was *not* legal in England ‘til after WWI- I believe it also went for step-daughters & wards, too- but like I say, it’s been a *looong* while since I read this. Such a marriage would have been impossible- even if they married to solemnise their relationship (which people did back then, despite the lack of standing)- Charlotte could have only been legally & socially considered his mistress- & their cute little baby? They would have been a bastard, & not legally entitled to inherit from their father- though they could have inherited from Charlotte. America followed a lot of English law, & it wasn’t like they changed every single law they had, with the Revolution, surely? Now, Martin’s a war hero, so maybe they don’t suffer socially but I always find it frustrating when films or tv shows either make like the past was sh*t & always terrible or they modernise things & show next to nothing of social & cultural nuances & mores. Sorry for the ramble- I’m looking forward to seeing the rants!

@@BigWillyG1000 Henry VIII's whole case on why he should get to divorce Catherine of Aragon is the bible says "man should not lie with his brother's widow". Poor Catherine had to prove that 20 years previous she did not have sex with Arthur, so in the eyes of the church she would be legitimately allowed to marry Henry. There's some fascinating historians on KZbin that talk about this subject

In high school American history I got to see this back to back with Pearl Harbor. I think I said something along the lines of "Can't we just do more homework instead?"

Brandon, you have got all the things right. As an historian, I'm so annoyed by films giving negative information. I'm following History Buffs, and from now on, I will follow you, because you. Are. ON! Thank you for your good work. Cheers fam, keep it up!

A kind of good scene was when they reacted to the woman going "Oh. Oh, fireworks bravo". This was the first film from this period I saw though my history teacher admitted he wanted to get something else but wasn't able to. Not counting this movie we learned more from the loyalist side.

Adam Baldwin's character was a cool addition, showing American loyalists.

Chris Nixon if only it was executed well though and not completely bias in favour of the Americans. Truthfully over 2/3 of Americans didn’t want independence so to see only one Loyalist and him being portrayed in such a way is just insulting

You had me laughing out loud with your description of US public school education on the US Revolution. Even as a kid, I suspected I was being fed a line of crap. Like in so many other areas of history, unless I had educated myself about the revolution, I would have been a really ignorant person if I had trusted the public schools. Now I am a teacher at a private school where students actually learn genuine history.

I feel like ONE other piece of information that they got right was the line about Gates after Camden: "Last anyone saw riding hard north-east with his staff a hundred yards behind trying to catch up."

Hi Brandon, first of all this content of yours is very thought provoking and I really do feel inspired after viewing it. However, I would like to take this experience further. I am a fimmaker from China who studied in th US. I work with, among all professions, many high school history teachers in China. High school students in China rarely have the opportunity to aceess the contents like yours from the internet. I love history and I believe history reflects much more than numbers, dates, locations and names. I would like to bring your content, translated into Chinese of course, into Chinese high school campuses. Give our students a new perspective, a new line of thinking and a new point of view.

I actually really enjoyed the patriot when i first watched it and it was the movie that woke my interest in the time period. I get, what you want to say and i agree that historical movies should be done better and more accurately, but it really i would rather have movies like the patriort instead of no historical movies at all. I think we should not be too harsh, after all their first aim is to tell a good story and apart from all its flaws i still enjoy that movie and think it is a decent story. Everyone who knows american patriotism knows that they tend to make themselves better and more intelligent, than they were and their enemies more dumb and evil than they were. Knowing that, it is nearly impossible to fall for its flaws. And i must admit that the inaccuracies in the patriot mostly have a reason behind them concerning storytelling. So after all i am interested in some nitpicking in your upcoming videos and i am glad you ll do them but i am also happy for the patriot to exist, although hoping that historical movies will be getting more accurate.

Same here. Some "historical" movies have made me become extremely interested in the topics they're portraying. For example, Chernobyl Diaries made me obsessed with the actual disaster

IMHO a review like this is useless except in the world of academic study. The Patriot is an ok movie and has started many on a course to study the real time and place.
