I kinda feel sorry for Freddie in this scene, because he's basically saying he'd take even the very plainest of them if they were willing to help him, but he's got absolutely no experience with young ladies so he's screwing it up and doesn't understand why. Poor kid.

Guess that's why he's lucky to have someone like Mabel 😀

This is such a wonderful rendition. Rex Smith is perfect in this role.

I sure like his singing voice. He’s certainly not bad to look at, either.

During our production of the show my friend used to yell “There’s two!” whenever Frederic sang this one.

I love this song! It's so funny and yet incredibly sung

That's kind of the style the entire production was in. If you look at Linda Rondstadt and Kevin Kline, neither of them have the traditional operatic sound either. Personally, I think it's neat how the show still works even with the style changed.

The Broadway version is better than the dead light opera version.

@@rickstalentedtongue910 Other than the changes made to the instrumentation, this is actually probably closer to how Pirates was performed back in Gilbert & Sullivan's lifetime. It was always intended to be a comedic light opera, but the "opera" tends to get way too much emphasis in most productions.

this song is in D-flat, and his high note is the 6th of the scale, which makes it a B-flat.

I think Mikado and maybe Gondoliers are here to stay as well. I think this is one of the moments that shouldn't be played fast and loose

Too slow?? That's how it's meant to be. Andante.

Listening to the whole performance, Mr. Smith's voice grows increasingly ragged to the point that Linda has to help him out by taking his solo line in the finale. And I do feel sympathy for him, it's a tough role. But it's meant for a legit trained tenor which he is not.

I thought Joshua La Force of Houston G&S sang it better.

Way too slow, but his voice is better in this than in the film version. Frederic is supposed to be the most operatic souding of the G&S tenor roles, but that certainly isn't evident in this performance, which is basically in a pop / belt style, not an operatic sound at all.

And Rex Smith does his best but listen to a proper tenor to see how it could sound
@funtimeslondon10 жыл бұрын
No, it's not supposed to be THIS SLOW. It's maddening, not poignant ...
@tvaddict662311 ай бұрын
I’ve heard it sung at different tempos and this one is the best I’ve heard..
@colino7215 жыл бұрын
And you can't sing attractively in an operatic style? G&S is dying regardless - it will increasingly only be Pirates and Pinafore that get any regular airing in the future. I saw Yeoman the other week and it was just a dull story... And I still reckon this is way too ploddy and slow - loses all its comedy.
