Again thank you again for being so honest and telling your story. It's funny how so many people brush off what artist do as "natural talent" and don't even think about the hours (years) we've spent getting to where we are. I love these episodes. You're doing such a wonderful thing.

Such a perfect subject for all of us! I have been blessed to be called "talented," on occasion, which is of course a compliment and am humbled by it. But something inside me wants to explain that "talent = thousands of hours of practice". When I compliment artists I try to do so in a way that acknowledges the specific aspects that are impressive and the years of practice they've put in.

Hi Bethany, this is a great topic for discussion. I believe that creative talent is a form of communication and a reflection of our inner selves in a world where many of us struggle to share our thoughts and feelings with others. Furthermore, I believe that creativity provides us with an alternative worldview and supported by our desire for peace, tranquility, and harmony with nature itself, hence our love of animals, of landscape, or rivers and seas, still life, wildlife, and other forms like abstraction and so on. However. I also thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions and experiences and the connection with the business side of being a creative. It is so helpful to know that we are not alone with the struggles we face as creative people. You are a real blessing sharing the highs and lows abd enabling others to learn how to manage these problems and at the same time how we can move forward doing what we love most. ❤😅

You are so right with the natural talent, l had a fasination with how artists did that with paint from being a lad so thought l would like to try it, keeped that interest and eventually through reading books and then you tube gradually improved 🙂

People need to believe "talent" is a real thing. They need to believe that craftsmanship is a godsend. Because otherwise being really professional at anything all boils down to passion and determination. But passion and determination is at arms length. Anybody can be passionate. We all feel passion towards at least something. It's right there under the skin. It is human nature. The other ingredient namely determination - well, the dirty, bent and broken school systems taught us, that determination is just a muscle that must be trained. So, as every artist knows, determination isn't really an ingredient to success. Determination too is practically an empty phrase. Because when people are passionate, determination is pretty much a byproduct. We do the things we love to do, not because we must (determination), but because we want to (passionately). Leaving us with passion and - well, let's be honest, luck. Lucky because of supporting parents, because of encouraging teachers, because of understanding friends, because of the dumb luck not being born into abject poverty where even the cheapest pencil is a treasure. When nature nurtures the passion, then passion leads to profession. And sometimes passion is so powerful that it practically plows through all obsticals. And that's even more impressive. To those people the word "talent" is obviously an insult.

Thanks for this Bethany….totally agree with you. It’s lovely to get compliments about your artwork, but I don’t think it’s natural talent….its bloomin hard work, & thousands of hours practicing. Busy drawing a donkey while I’m listening to you 😂 I struggle big time with confidence about if my work is good or are ppl just being kind 🥴…..I know I’ve done some decent pieces, but then I go rogue & produce some questionable drawings! Anyway , always good to hear your thoughts….another fab podcast x

Great podcast, Bethany. I'm looking forward to the social media podcast. I truly struggle with IG and filming. I'm good on FB but for some reason, IG is a struggle. Also, I'd love to hear how your pricing evolved and how you meet your monthly income goals. Are you a Cancerian by any chance???

Ive done commissions since 1996 but have no idea how you get people to buy original work. How do you do it? I also agree on the natural talent thing, its just practice

Have you tried the US pattern of self marketing? When you are timid, people will feel your vibe and have this instinct that your product isn't worth the money you're asking for. Just like that timid stranger in the dark alley who sells fake Rolex from under his trench coat, who is frantically watching out left and right for the cops When you are smug and even egocentric, boasting about just how awesome your stuff is, a lot of people may actually believe you. See the so called artist "Leon Löwentraut". His ego is sky high. If only his work would reflect his ego just a little. He makes big money, because he has the audacity to tell the camera just how special he is. People don't just buy the product. People buy the whole package. They buy the name, the person, the history, the flair, the ego, and everything in between. Just like people don't buy a Tesla because it is the best car. Far from it. They buy it because Elon Musk is wicked good at self marketing his name. People don't buy Gucci because of the high quality. Hell no, they buy it because it is the whole ego -package around the products. Bottom line, you'll sell when you convince people that YOU are the product, without telling them that you are the product.

It annoys me more when you get people (Generally Americans) telling you that you have a gift from god or some other way of basically saying my ability is god's work lol and I'm just some puppet acting on his control....yeah thanks for totally disregarding all the years of my own effort to get better and just put all the credit to an imaginary guy in the sky lol...yes I am not religious....but disregarding my own work and struggle for years and just giving all the credit to god is just a really crappy way to compliment anyone and especially somebody who doesn't even believe in god lol.. I often wish these people could just leave god out of just one sentence they ever come out with.

These people need to. Otherwise these people will be forced to confront their own incapability. They'd have to realize that they could, but they don't because maybe of lazyness. Good art would be the unbearable kick against their own lifes choices. And nobody wants that. Kind of like that insufferable memory of the girl who liked us back then in school but we were too young and stupid to realize and act on it. Yeh, that too was just fate. Otherwise we'd have to face the fact that we're all dummies, bascially.
