My Grandpa's 740 in 30.06 is still going strong. It's only been fed 180gr core-lokt and many Deer have been taken with it by several family members. Gramps insisted on no oil in the action, he used graphite powder and I've never known it to jam ever.

I have a 742 Woodsmaster in .308 that belonged to my father in law. It was all gummed up when I got it, and took it all apart and cleaned it. One thing with these rifles is to grease the bolt. Mine runs great and I’m taking it hunting this afternoon.

I am definitely feeling that way...I think it will be a very good deer gun but you have to give it proper maintenance. Thanks for watching!!

Yes sir. I have the 742 woodmaster Don’t know the age of it but I’ve had for 39 yrs got it given to me my second season. The gun was willed to my brother who had for 5 yrs ( never used it) I did have trouble with it jamming but got it fixed. I’ve killed many deer and a few bear with it. Nice video

I have my grandfathers 740, he bought it to deer hunt in Maine. My dad got a few deer in NY and a bear in Maine with it.

I really enjoy hearing the history these rifles bring to the table. A deer rifle that is passed on from generation to generation. Very cool! I am glad you have the rifle and hope you harvest a deer with it someday! Thanks for sharing and watching!

Thank you for posting. Level, balanced, presentation. A working man's semi-auto hunting rifle, .. Browning BAR's were a notch, or two, above in production, .. but 2-3 times the cost. Priced out of the market for many in the '60's/'70's. .. A fair number of 1 1/2 - 4 power Redfield & Weaver scopes on Ebay at present, .. should that Nikon turn a bit cumbersome.

I hope to one day own a Browning BAR. They are a bit pricey. I will check out he Redfield and Weaver scopes. I have used a Weaver scope before. I do think one of them may be a better match than the Nikon. Great suggestion. Thanks for watching!

The 742 wood master i had would shoot once and jam here in Tennessee we call them jam master a friend has the latest 7400 and it jammed some but it was a mag problem but the 742 i had was a extractor problem no parts available in my opinion none of them are very good 740 , 742 or 7400 but i hear other poeple love them but my personal experience with them is they are junk

Your description of the Wood Master series (740, 742, 7400) pretty much sums up what by far most folks say. A gun that you just can not rely on as it jams too much. So far the 740 I have has not jammed. I do plan on using it this season, so we will see. If it does jam - well back the gun safe it goes! Thanks for watching!!

Is this 65 Year Old Rifle Still a Viable Hunting Rifle ?? The Remington 740 aka The Woodsmaster Why wouldn't it be? If it will still kill a deer then its viable. I miss my old Savage 110 .25-06. Great deer rifle and was my first deer rifle.
@daveshsb3 ай бұрын
Exactly! The rifle shot well - no misfires - and was fairly accurate. Definitely will put down a deer. Looking forward to deer gun season. Thanks for watching and commenting!

If it shoots where you aim it, it’s not too old. Fancy rifles are nice to have, but unnecessary. Biggest buck I ever killed was taken with a short-barreled Norinco SKS with a Dragunov stock. I was ribbed about carrying such an ugly non-hunting rifle but it did the job just fine.

A great example of what to look for in a deer rifle. It needs to be accurate and you need to be able to shoot it! Thanks for sharing and for watching!
