Fun fact/theory: I'm pretty sure the tendency to use red, blue, and green for magical girl and other teams is because those are the primary colors of light. We get taught in primary school that the primary colors in general are red, blue, and yellow. But in film school we learn about RGB. There's a bunch of color theory stuff to explain it, but suffice to say that those are the colors of light that combine to make white light. Very on theme for magical or superpowered teams.
@CureSmilefulАй бұрын
are you my spirit animal or what, lately mentioning "primary colors" makes me immediatelly check whether person means yellow or green, because I'm so adamant on promoting real (light related) primary colors and also recognition of cyan lol
@AlohaChipsАй бұрын
True.... Unfortunately kids are usually taught about the RYB color model because it gives them basic guidance to mixing colors when working in traditional art materials like paints, where only certain colors were historically available to start from for mixing other colors out of in the first place. How light actually mixes, and more advanced printing methods (that rely on more modern chemical dyes) such as CMYK, are traditionally some levels of resources or knowledge beyond the larger goal that is served in teaching elementary (and younger) kids RYB as the "primary" colors. But much understanding of art and color ends there. They don't even go on to explain that RYB is only one possible color model. So yeah it's a bit of a travesty how rarely the intersection of art and advanced understandings of light and technology are taught so people understand some of the most basic modern applications. RGB and CMYK color stuff comes up in things like color TVs/monitors as well as printing. Instead you only systematically learn about those if you're curious or go into specialized fields and applications, like how I got to learning about RGB by trying to figure out how to tune/use computer RGB colorspaces in Photoshop, or learning how CMYK printing worked because I specialized in printmaking for my bachelor of the arts college degree. The problem is kids and basic education systems CAN easily have kids mess around mixing traditional paints to show them how it works, but do not have the tools to let them mess around with, nor is teaching them about other color models used in color monitors and creating four-layer color prints. It's just not given the same weight the older RYB structure is because the latter is the one you need for understanding traditional, historical art, and its materials.

I just started the video so I don't know if you mention it but I didn't see any comments talking about it so here I am: in one chapter of Codename: Sailor V Minako is helping out a Mangaka who does a long running magical girl story. Its about 10 sisters who run a bridal shop but turn into magical girls. In the original german translation the manga was called "Wedding Cherry". In the english miss dream fan translation it's called "Aurora Wedding" This always felt like an obvious refererence to Wedding Peach for me. It seems the original german translator did so too.

Maybe translation wise it was a reference. But timeline wise, it doesn’t make sense. Code Name: Sailor V’s one shot came out in 1991. And its serial started in late 1993. If Wedding Peach came out 1994, it didn’t exist yet to be referenced.

@MJAYMONONOKE I get your point, but Sailor V was published very sporadically up until 1997. And the chapter in question is one of the late ones (the fourth to last one). I unfortunately couldn't find the chapters original release date (only a fanmade google spreadsheet. There it says the release was in May 1996) , but the tankabon with it in it was first released in 1997. So it might be possible timeline wise. I mean in the end we'll never know for sure. It's just speculation.

Interesting fact: In Italy, the series was purchased in 1997 to be aired after the conclusion of the fifth season of Sailor Moon. However, for some reason, this never happened, and it remained unreleased until the summer of 2000, when it was finally broadcast in blocks of six episodes every Friday after midnight. Despite the late-night time slot, the series was heavily censored, and the storyline was altered. True to Italian tradition, the title was changed to "I tanti segreti di un cuore innamorato" ("The Many Secrets of a Loving Heart"). The names of all the characters were changed (e.g., Momo became SunRose, Yuri became Lily, Hinagiku became Daisy, Yosuke became Alex, Kazuya became Nicholas, and so on). The plot was completely rewritten, transforming the battle between Angels and Demons into a conflict between benevolent aliens from the planet Sparkling Crystalia and malevolent aliens from the Dark Planet. To hide the fact that they were angels, the protagonists were referred to as the "Princesses of Hearts" in their bridal forms and the "Queens of Hearts" in their warrior forms. Transformation phrases and attack lines were also modified (in a crazy way. For example Lily's Saint Strahl Stardust attack became: "Marvellous power of enamoured blue, unleash the thousand starry leaves of love! Behold the golden autumn of a shining heart!") and many silent moments, typical of certain situations, were filled with redundant explanations. Additionally, in the final episode, Reine Devila's blood-red tears were recolored blue, and the nude embrace between Wedding Peach and Viento was partially censored with the addition of a semi-transparent freeze frame. The series was aired only once and cannot be officially accessed except through unofficial streaming platforms. Only the Wedding Peach DX OVAs were released uncensored, adapted by Dynamic in 3 VHS in 1999.

I think catching a glimpse of his anime version 100% put me off the adaptation 💀 Oh, about the battle uniform: the manga did the classic thing of their uniforms evolving throughout the series, from the figure skating-like outfits at the beginning to the more fantasy armor-like sets that are used throughout the entire anime. Definitely feels like a streamlining matter! I feel like it's definitely distinct enough from SM to just be another magical girl series.

Wedding Peach may have some things that aged poorly which have rightfully been called out by this video and others but I will never forget how much Jama P meant to me and how much the series as a whole did. Also for one more fun fact there is basically a lesbian/lgbt positive remake of Wedding Peach in visual novel form. It is a remake that reimagines the Wedding Peach mythos to be about being a hero / wedding peach / someone worthy of love from *any* gender and basically has several lesbian characters (basically it is as canon as sailor moon’s lesbian characters since it’s not allowed to show actual kiss or anything but it’s still pretty open and blunt.)

As an interesting intersection between the VA and surprise middle age man fanbase points, it's worth noting that Wedding Peach was pretty close off the back of Evangelion. Hinagiku's VA was Asuka, and Potamus was Misato, so there's a connection there that may have pulled them in. To the point of Wedding Peach though, I do think it get unfairly maligned a lot. You even see people alleging Momoko's mother's name was ripping off Cardcaptor Sakura as if Wedding Peach didn't get there first and Sakura is not like. *The* Japanese flower name to go with the theme. I dont know if I could sincerely say Wedding Peach was good exactly, but it was at the very least bad on its own merits, and it deserves credit for what it does well. I'd argue Momoko and Yosuke remain one of if not the best developed romance in a magical girl show south of Anthy and Utena, and probably rate pretty highly even branching out more broadly into shoujo. Also HELL yeeeessss Wedding Wars slaps SEVERELY. I remember slaving away over a MIDI I found online to try and make a workable arrangement I could take to my singing teacher because it truly did get into my blood. I... may have also written terrible and embarassing translyrics when I was 14 😂😂 it just has that effect on people I guess!

I always thought those VAs were connected to certain agencies and they ended up working together multiple times. Eva's VAs have also appeared in Sailor Moon as extras or one-off roles as far as I remember. I believe people never gave WP a chance because at first glance it was way too similar to Sailor Moon. And well, from a technical standpoint it makes perfect sense, since they shared the writing staff and Kazuko Tadano, who despite leaving after R set the template for Sailor Moon's artstyle. Wedding wars is easily the best song in the soundtrack.

The stories are completely different and while they do fight with the power of love and pretty costumes like the senshi of"Sailor Moon" I say that has become a staple of Magical Girl tropes in general and I see no reason why it should only be exclusive to Sailor Moon. It's really nice to know there's a dedicated fanbase for Wedding Peach in Germany of all places to the point they got a volume compilation reprint. Also, fun fact: Wedding Peach was the first series done by OLM as a studio and Wedding Peach's success actually was a factor leading to them later producing the Pokemon anime with the same staff involved in making Wedding Peach. Really though? I think we need to stop assuming a series is a rip-off because they share things in common on the surface because we could end up shutting series that we might have enjoyed had we given them a chance first.

The future OLM show I would connect to Wedding Peach the most directly is Pokémon, there is a lot of overlapping staff both major and minor. But Comic Party is also notable for the direct refrences. Tomita wrote episode 7 which doesn't surprise me, he also wrote the early Fatphobic Sailor Moon episode. Like with Sailor Moon Tomita is good and keeping a decent arching plot but not the best writer for one offs. I've been a Wedding Peach apologist for years but never thought to make the Romeo and Juliette connection. Part of that may be my being annoyed as that comparison for like any romance at all, when I see someone try to sell me on something being like Romeo and Juliette my first question is, who's Mercutio? The other issue here though may be that it's kind of a Spoiler. I'm taking a break at 19:55 for now, I'll watch more of the video later.

Thank you very much for this review. In my younger years I did read/ watch tons of magical girl manga/ anime. But this was the first time I heard of wedding peach. It was very interesting to hear your thoughts about this show so I decided to give it a try. While the overall story does have some plotholes. I decided to binge read the manga and a now at ep 41 of the anime. The art and story is so nostalgic from the old shool magical girl anime I used to watch. I love the chemistry between Momoko and Yosuke, but damn the pacing is sometimes so weird. There are some really good episodes and moments out there but a lot of fillers are just... and I am disappointed with how they handled Lily and Limone's relationship. They should have developed it, instead of the sudden "Oh I was in love with you in your past life" scene. I would have loved to see some mutual attraction between the two early on and maybe make Limone more of a guide for the girls instead of randomly appearing after a fight and only doing something like 5% of the time and as you said at least have Yanagiba show some interest in Yuri or something. Be it through gestures or comments. It doesn't have to be plain obvious. And maybe make these devils feel like an actual threat, since it felt they were most of the time bullying the students of the same school over and over again. This should should have a reboot and they could incorporate stuff of both the manga and the anime. Because there are somethings the manga did better and other things the anime and they could improve what none did good. And I wanna know where are those two angels that originally married with the 4 somethings? Btw is we follow the credits, Scarlet and Jama-P would be dating. xD

While it wouldn't have fixed all the problems with the show, I think if the main theme is marriage and relationships, why not have each girl represent a different type of love? For example, Momo and her man could represent the traditional, lovey-dovey high school romance that Disney and similar media often push on pre-teens. Daisy and her man could embody a "best friends in public, lovers behind closed doors" dynamic-essentially a non-PDA couple. Meanwhile, Lily and her man might have a more emotional and compassionate relationship, where their focus is on emotional support and unwavering commitment, helping each other through challenges without needing to be asked. As for Scarlet, it would have been interesting to portray her as a lesbian, perhaps in a civil partnership or mourning the loss of her partner, which could add depth to her hatred of demons. I think giving each of the girls a distinct type of relationship would have reinforced the theme of love and its many forms, delivering a more meaningful and effective message.

What's wrong with heteronormativity? Without that humanity wouldn't exist. Besides if scarlet was gay she's jump from girl to girl.
@jakefarrell754620 күн бұрын
@@candicemceady308 I never said nor implied there was anything wrong with heteronormativity just that, for a show focused on relationships, it would have been interesting to explore different kinds of relationships, both hetero and not. As for Scarlett jumping from girl to girl, that's a bit of a leap in logic, considering she wasn't written to be a lesbian or bisexual. For that matter, there's no certainty anyone would know where her hypothetical non-straight counterpart would have been taken in the show's direction. Lastly, I don't intend to carry on this conversation, as it is nearly two weeks old at the time of your comment. With all that said, I hope we found commonality in enjoying Aishyo's video, and I wish you a pleasant rest of your day.

20:28 sailor moon has an episode similar where Usagi is kinda bullied for here weight and so she pretty much starves herself and goes to the gym and works out till she faints similarly to an episode of full house where DJ does the exact same thing of starving herself and working out till she faints. It was just stereotypical in that time period for girls to be expected to be thin and beautiful and if they had even a bit of curve to them they were seen as unattractive, but usually they have a message like “you shouldn’t starve yourself to attract a boy, your beautiful as you are” which I felt was a good message because young girls would do this and think this was what was expected of them until they saw those episodes and said “hey maybe they are right and I’m beautiful as is and I don’t need to starve or work out to impress anyone”

sailor moon is heavy inspired by many shojos, sentai, majokkos (specifically the fashion and idol ones of the 80s) and even cutie honey herself. theres no way Minako's design isnt a reference to Honey, I even think she does Honeys speech in Sailor V once or twice too. nothings original fellas. however as a big big fan of old school majokkos (think sally and ranzie) you cant deny sailor moons influence on the genre almost every henshin from then on takes from Moon Prism Power (and the nudity concept itself is cutie honey), the delivery of Peach's speeches or attacks are even similar in rhythm (the closest way I can explain this is in the Live Action PGSM they deliver their attack lines different from how its typidally done usually said faster shorter ect its a different rhythm). Peach and other magical girls from then on also use the same or similar sound effects bank (granted sailor moon takss from older stuff theyre not all from sailor moon) like a lot of sailor moon's sfx can be heard in older works especially kamen rider but they're now HEAVILY associated with sailor moon and magical girls cus of the usage. And even then sailor moon only does any of that cus of its tokusatsu and sentai influence. if Naoko's older version of the manga indicates anything a lot of times the girls just attack or transform, they don't shout anything, once toei oushed for more sentai influence reprints added more attacks. (ie Mercury's Attack: Shabon Spray or Aqua Mist for later stuff, went unnamed until 2003, she just does it)
@marocat4749Ай бұрын
Ok the transformations, to be fair can be skipped as in a looot anime its a way to reuse scenes and fill out time , anime are full with that. Digimon has it too. A lot of the times its jjust good to cut budget when filling time, like still and foutth back fourth back cuts. So its often creative reusing footage while filling time without it being too noticable in the show. A lot of what became styistic choices, was creative working about limitations and filling time and reuse footage

I never had an opinion of it being a rip off Sailor Moon, mostly due to how I found it stated above and that it seemed different enough in my head to say it wasn't like it. The successor sounds interesting due to how it modernizes and fixes the criticisms of the original work. If Ranma can get a remake, I could totally root for Wedding Peach (or Wedding Apple) to get one or a new anime adaptation!

1:40 🔞: when you mentioned flower themed names, it unlocked a memory of this hent*i called “Lingerie Senshi Papillon Rose”, where the core team are named after flowers: Rose, Lily, Margarette (daisy), Dahlia and Violet. The naming scheme then kinda derails and instead refers to the person’s powers: Adonis, Lupinus, Cosmos (who is actually the Sailor Saturn equivalent). There’s even a Petite-Rose who is the main character’s daughter from the future.

@@MJAYMONONOKE.... I know of this h*ntai 🤨 well not really it's more ecchi but yeah I'm aware.
@evanmak7837Ай бұрын
@@Aishyo yeah, Papillon Rose was basically the plot of Sailor Moon with the protagonist trio of Wedding Peach (not so obvious with Rose, the only passing mention was that she has a "peachy" butt, but Margarette and Lily are obviously designed after Hinagiku and Yuri, Dhalia is basically Scarlett if you consider her joining the trio later), with the rest of the cast and the villains being designed after a bunch of Sakura Wars characters. Adonis and Lupinus were dead ringers for Cure Black and Cure White, their first appearance predates the Pretty Cure anime, but not the marketing for it. The creator of Papillon Rose had way too much fun (no pun) with anything geeky and otaku-related. Video game shoutouts, 2ch lingo, roasting the original authors, they overly fanatics who can get very creepy, the anime industry in general, the sellouts, anime tropes etc. example: They released an artbook for a "remake" a-la Sailor Moon Crystal and it pretty much predicted the reception for Crystal season 1-2. While the show was midway on its first season no less. And they hit a lot of nails in the head 🤣

Same, I never watched it. But became aware of it from animewallpapers/d*t/c*m. I just liked the character designs. Would have probably watched it if it wasn’t ecchi. They really just mashed up Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, and various mahou shoujo - even switching up the styles between the seasons which was a bit jarring. One season they’d look like Digi Charat, and then like Ah! My Goddess the next. PS loved the video. New sub!

@@evanmak7837 I read that the manga-ka and director had a lot of creative differences after the first season, so I feel like a lot of the show is based on his preferences rather than the actual manga itself. Like Papillon Violet was the template for the villain Regine Aplis, but since I never watched the show, I can’t say if they referenced this fact in the show. From what I can tell, the manga is just an ecchi version/parody of Sailor Moon with a lot of sexual references, since the manga-ka’s dad was a sex therapist. But the show kinda looks like they used the manga as a base to do their own thing.
@evanmak7837Ай бұрын
@@MJAYMONONOKE keep in mind while researching about Papillon Rose, anything you read about the mangaka, the anime production, the staff, etc., none of them are real. The original anime and manga (if you even can call it that) is a big joke poking fun at every aspect of a multi-media franchise, but with a sexual twist. From production, to adaption, to staff, ratings, animation directors, soundtracks, literally everything. I kinda wish the show was real because it would be interesting to see its story in action. This one big mashup of magical girl tropes together with burlesque-style american comedy, with a little bit of soft porn a la Emmanuelle. And the character designs are very cool. The OVA tried to do it but was...meh, and the "New season"... yeah, why did that even happen? In reality, it was all one illustrator in his 20s writing a shitpost fanfic online while practicing his drawing/animating skills. (He went on to work for Konami, so that worked well).

Here's a hot take (fixin' to piss people off, lol): Wedding Peach is better than Sailor Moon. There I said it, and that's what I think. I have to unironically force myself to watch Sailor Moon because it's so weird and problematic and makes me uncomfortable, but I've watched Wedding Peach and fell in love with it, watching it like 5 times... Sure, I got tired of certain characters losing their memories and that one weird fat episode, but I would still consider this, Princess Tutu, and Kaito Saint Tail my top three magical girl animes.
