The S trim is more than enough for most, but I will say when shopping for a boxster/Cayman equipped with the Limited Slip Diff and the Sports exhaust is a heck of a lot easier if you focus on the GTS model. Some GTS models are selling used for $70+ which puts it dangerously close to GT4 territory if you use "Man Math". My advice is to set a budget and stick to it. It is far too easy to start looking at the 981 for $45-50k and suddenly justify a $95k Spyder or GT4.

I had this same debate and bought an S. I was able to find a car that checked almost every box I had on my list. I really wanted a manual trans, black interior, white, black or silver exterior, sport chrono, 20" wheels, and sport exhaust. I found a car with everything but sport exhaust. I put and AWE exhaust on the car first which was about $1500, the drone was brutal. AWE thankfully has a money back guarantee and I got my money back. I finally bit the bullet and spent the $2500 to buy the factory Porsche Sport Exhaust. A tough pill to swallow but Porsche Westwood actually had a special on labor for performance parts so it wasn't terrible to do. Every 981 needs PSE though, it changes the entire personality of the car. I do love that I don't have to be so in your face all the time with the pops and burbles of the PSE and I can switch it off when I want (rare but it happens). Have you driven a 981 with PSE?

I fail to see how anyone could HATE this car ... it's literally amazing. Never drove a 911, and I am sure it's Da Shizzle even more, but it also costs considerably more specced similarly. I see the CPO Boxster S as an amazing bargain ... mine only had 14,600 miles on it ... hardly broken in, and a great warranty for a used car, at 2/3 the price of a new one.

I think the GTS is worth it if you want the performance items guaranteed and do not wish to modify it. Things like sports exhaust that you can open/close without having some strange aftermarket keyfob is very nice. Also if you're used to limited slip you'll notice the lack of it right away in most off-the-lot S cars.

I currently have an NB Miata and I’m looking to upgrade to a Boxster. I feel like it’s the perfect move up because the Boxster is the Miata of the Porsche world. Its small, light, nimble and not overpowered. I can’t wait to test drive one to see how it compares. I’ve driven the S2000 which was originally the next car I was gonna go for but I was honestly disappointed at how it drove compared to the Miata. If you don’t get into VTEC, it’s heavier, slower and less comfortable than the NB. Really hoping that a 987.2 or 981 won’t be that kind of disappointment

The few times I have been lucky enough to drive a Boxster/Cayman, the sound is amazing. Tbh a base Boxster that requires more go pedal/higher revs maybe even more fun (on the road) if the engine noise is what you crave (along with the right exhaust). Never driven an EPS boxster/cayman, hope they did not lose the magic.

Gears are too long for a manual, you'll mostly be cross shifting between 2-3. Or just leaving it in 2 (sports plus like) or 3 (sports). The rest will feel like cruising gears. This car really needs shorter gears, in the pdk it's fine.

Surprised the back tried to get away at 6:32! I've driven my buddies 981 Cayman S (manual, 20mm suspension) here in Arizona and it seemed incredibly well planted (that being said the tires melt on the pavement here so that sure does add a lot of grip lol). Also, since you have driven quite a few different cars, what car would you buy with an +/- $80K budget? I've owned an M4, and just sold my automatic C7 Z51 and have been really looking at the C7 GS with a manual and Z07 package. I've also looked at the 981 Spyder and 991.1 S, but the tech seems a lot more dated than the C7 (Apple CarPlay, front and rear cameras, cooled seats that actually work)
@TedwardDrives6 жыл бұрын

"engaging drive where you can push it into a corner and you can feel a really balanced chassis with a mid-engine - there's nothing else that does this other than a Cayman" - You mean other than the Elise/Exige/Evora, 4C, A110? But yeah, not many sports cars like that anymore.
@TedwardDrives6 жыл бұрын
The US only gets the Evora and 4C out of your list. They are pretty uncommon cars here. We discussed the 4C in this video and that it is much more hard core than a boxster/cayman so it sort of falls outside of the usability realm. The Evora falls into similar pricing (50k USD) as the boxster/cayman so that is certainly an option...but it never really took off in the US

I had a 14 S that also gave me some scares. The 981 and maybe even the 718 are just snappy and I end up trading it very quick for a 991.1 P.S. I also had older Pzeros. Could that have been the issue?
@TedwardDrives6 жыл бұрын
When they go they go fast (just ask david...)! I had Pzeros on my M5 for a bit...honestly terrible lol. I can't put it all on the tire because the road was very greasy and I was admittedly on the wear bars in the rear. Good lesson for those who want to be ham fisted and let their ego drive these cars. There are great stability systems in place, but they can absolutely still get away from you. I honestly wonder if I had stabbed the throttle, would the stability control have stepped in sooner? I felt like i was riding it just on the limits of where it wanted to catch me lol

I don't think I would, but I would need to spend more time with it. Getting a 981 in a few months and no IMO the GTS is not worth it. You can now purchase a well optioned S Model with 40-50,000 miles for 45-49,000. I’m putting headers and titanium exhaust on mine anyway so sport exhaust has no value for me. Alcantara os hard to maintain so don’t want that either. These with a tune will take the S beyond the GTS power output and be more responsive from what I’ve researched and I’ve researched A LOT. I’m waiting to find one with PDK, sports chrono, sport steering wheel, and these almost always have the premium package with heated seats, Nav and Sat radio as well. PASM, premium stereo and extended leather would be nice but wouldn’t really improve the driving experience much if at all. I’ll leave it in sport mode all the time anyway. For me othe S is all I need and this is one of the best all around sports cars ever made, is perfectly practical as a daily AND gets close to 30mpg highway, so what more could you want?
