Dude!! You held my attention at the beginning like no other. The combination of a meaningful story + pictures (your daughters procedure) was fantastic. I'm tired of seeing people "review" cameras only to talk about specs or take a handful of poorly executed "street photography" shots. This short concise opinion on the gr iiix (with the story) was perfect 👍🏼

Good video, I have the GrIIIx and Sony RX100 VII. The Sony blows it away in terms of focusing and has a 28-200 lens zoom and a viewfinder. But that Ricoh lens and sensor are just amazing. Hard to beat the Ricoh for photo quality in a tiny package.

Years ago our son had the same procedure and it really helped alleviate his ear infections. I have a GR3, it's economical form factor makes it so useful and it's superb image quality capability is evidenced in the fine photos you posted in this video. Good work!

Thanks for your thoughts on the camera. I’m trying to decide on getting one. I have a Leica Q2 and I love the hell out of it, but sometimes don’t want to bring it to certain places with me or have it hanging on me all the time. I don’t want another 28mm so I am looking at the iiix. I love that it’s pocketable and can be taken everywhere, and it seems that the image quality and ergonomics are excellent. So I’m close to pulling the trigger on it. I don’t have a need for video capabilities. And I’m stoked to hear that they are working on film simulation “recipes” for the Ricoh as I was playing with these when I had the x100v and enjoyed it. Glad your daughter had a smooth procedure; these things are always difficult to go through for parents/children, no matter how routine they are for the docs.

Got mine recently. Been shooting with it non stop! It's just so convenient and fast. The fact it's a one trick pony is what makes it good I think. What it does it does incredibly well.

From a stills photography only stand point (or as I've heard it described as the 'arrested image' by Dennis Stock) keep the Ricoh. You're already using a 40mm as your 'standard' lens (I do too) so there's a continuity of 'seeing' there. If the GIIIx had an EVF I'd buy it in a heart beat.

Glad your daughter is fine, Although I use m43 I also think about a pocketable camera for daily use, just comparing also both cameras. Ricoh is more an icon, the Sony more versatil. I have not decided yet but It should be one of both. Ricoh still too expensive for what they offer but it is so beautiful....

I was in a similar situation x100v and GRiii loved the size of the GRiii but liked the image quality of the x100v. Wanted a 3x but to similar focal length to the x100v. Ending up staying with the x100v. And of course looking at other stuff out there

ZV-1? It's a 1 inch sensor. It's about 1/16th the area of the APS-C sized sensor in the Ricoh. That is a fundamental difference. If you're okay with relaxing the constraint on sensor size, there's much better options than the Sony. If you want to maximize pocketability, choose a camera-centric phone. If you to maximize flexibility, there's a ton of micro-4/3 options; the Panasonic GM-1 is smaller than the Ricoh. If you want to minimize cost, there are literally hundreds of old digicam options.

Tempting….. had 2 Ricoh II/iii. Sold both. Went back to apsc. I never took as many pictures as when I had the Ricoh due to size portability. That being said, I’m going back to Ricoh for that reason. Plus the image quality is superb…

In my experience if there is ANY doubt send it back, you can always re-order. Zv1 is a powerful camera if you don’t mind shooting in some kind of auto mode. I took my xs10 to amusement park yesterday and by the end of day would have given almost anything to have taken my Zv1 with me instead.

You bring up many points that encompass my dilema since getting the Ricoh GR3. I love it. The image quality, form factor, it's size, perfect to throw in my pocket. Even fits fine in carhartt pocket tee. But with a little one that I'm chasing around, i'm wishing I had the ability to do video. I've been looking at the Sony ZV1 or RX100 series (would probably get the RX100V over the VII), or even the canon GX5 mII because i want the tilt screen. But you brought up a good point that only the Ricoh has, which is the fixed focal length. The startup speed that gives the Ricoh is also super important for grabbing moments. I'll likely just have to try the other compacts and see what works best for me. I can always have a fun camera that I enjoy, I'm realizing documenting family is more of the "job" for having a camera, where anything else is on the hobby side of things.

Not sure I would say it’s a one trick pony. It’s an APS-C fixed lens so as one trick as others in this category. Agree the video is considered not its strongest suit but it’s fine. I had an original X100 and loved it and still love Fuji. But, they are not pocketable. The 40mm is great on the GRiiix which is perfect for street and portraits. I agree the 28mm is too close to the iPhone also in my pocket. I also have a Nikon full frame with good primes and zooms and a pro flash. But, here’s the thing: I take my Ricoh everywhere with me, every day. And in the end, that’s the camera I want - the one that’s always with me.

I really loved the GR3x when I tried it but keep debating if I actually want to buy it. The cost and stories about durability concerns have kept me away. Like you, I really don't want to fiddle with a zoom lens. I did pick up a cheap p&s film camera which has been fun but of course not something I'm using every day. So I use my larger cameras as much as I can and then my phone. For you, I don't see how you could part with the ZV-1, you seem to keep going back to it for video. Could you live with using your phone for video and keep the GR3x?

Oh, I remember those ear tube days. Before the tubes my oldest had a febrile seizure when an ear infection kicked off a fever. Absolutely terrifying. Anyway - I love the ZV-1 in theory, kinda hate it in practice. It needs a mode button that works like the Osmo Action. I will say I like the ZV’s photo output in b&w. That way in low light you’re not getting gross color noise. Haven’t tried a Ricoh but love the output I’ve seen. My pants pockets are kinda maxed out so at that point, if it’s getting carried some other way, the size difference between a ZV and my X-T4 with 35/2 is almost moot. Sorry that was completely unhelpful. 😄

@@ericrjennings I’m pretty sure I would prefer the GR to the ZV for this use case. Better IQ, better ergos. You’re giving up the ZV’s video capability. But the ZV ergos are too annoying and I was always afraid I was going to break the lens. An everyday pocket item has to have some level of durability or it’s just gonna get destroyed. If you’re keeping the ZV regardless then you’ve always got that option if you know you’re going to need video.

If only Fuji would come out with an updated x70. Im really not sure why they wont. There forte in street/documentary photography with the x100 and x pro series is there. They only need to put the effort in and they could make the best pocket camera on the market.
