Our Dream in the Woods

In this video, we get logs delivered - these logs are charred on the outside from the Elk Fire that happened in Washington State, Summer 2023. We know there will be some work to them, removing the bark, but we are prepared for that. Greg also finishes the conduit for our electrical (for a future project) and fills in the trenches. It's like they weren't even there!
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from @BarnGeek We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

What do you think about these logs? Would you purchase or use logs that were burned in a forest fire? It will be interesting for sure. Hope you enjoy this video! 😊

The best way to check the water lines is to fasten a cheap pressure gauge (they come with garden hose fittings) then pressurize the system and shut off the primary valve. Now the line should stay pressurized without losing any pressure for 24 hours. Quick, cheap, and reliable.

Thank you, that’s a good tip. I don’t have a shut off valve at the well. I wonder if it’s designed to hold pressure if I just turn off the power?

That's some good-looking timber there and I can't see what makes their good beams to be made out of that very nice and who cares if they chard it's all it is just on the bark

Thanks, Wade- I think I will be cool to point to a beam that tells a little story. 😊

It should have a foot valve ( one way valve) to keep it primed. That will hold pressure if working correctly.

Greg, the lumber you cut from the blackened logs will most likely be covered up when you start your building. If the black shows, maybe you could hit the black with a pressure washer. A wood planner will remove the black also. Blessings to you and Greg.

Thank you, Bill- I still need about 25 Timbers to complete the cut list. I’m ok with a little black coming through but generally want most of them to look the same. I purchased a used Makita 12 1/4” planner from Japan. So it should clean things up as well. Thanks for watching! 😊

For the savings on the burned logs you can afford to do a little extra work. If the bark is already starting to come loose, a pressure washer might be able to debark them in short order. It would be worth trying, and if it does work, that might be standard procedure on all logs to make the saw blade last longer. Glad that you able to cut back days at work. An extra day or two can make a big difference in how much you are able to accomplish. Good luck. Thanks for bringing us along

Thank you, Mike- My current pressure washer isn’t anything fancy and probably doesn’t have the right pressure and volume to do much. But I’ll try a few different ways and see what works best. I agree- I’m looking forward to having the extra time to focus on preparing for the build. Thanks for watching! 😊

All the underground roughs for utilities feeds look very professional from my vantage point, for someone who does not do this regularly great job! If you are using the burnt logs for lumber for your own build do nothing as the black coloring will not affect the structural issues at all. This lumber can be used for any placements that will be covered over without concern and or out buildings. It is very smart and forward thinking to bunker all your log inventory, wood will love it and so will you if it takes longer than planned to saw into lumber again, Great foresight. Ray Stormont

Thank you, Ray- Definitely new to most of this construction work. All of the logs are for our personal use and some will become Timbers that are visible. A little darkening would be Ok but generally we want them to look the same. Always good to have a stock pile of nice logs around! 😊

Howdy Gregg- I don’t think you will have any trouble with the logs as far as structural. We had a wild fire on several acres of prime pine timber years ago and I was able to get a logger to get it cut fairly quickly before it lost too much moisture since it sells by the ton here. It went to one of the big mills we have here and it was sawed into lumber. I’m looking forward to watching you get it sawed into timbers. And yes, if you get the planer I think you’re going to get it will definitely clean them up. Take care and hope you have a great weekend. God bless

Hi, Paul- These logs seem prime after you get past the blackened edges. Even if they have a slightly different look- they will tell a unique story. I just got a used makita 12 1/4” planner- it’s big and heavy! 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods So glad you were able to find one. They are a bit pricey. I’m still using my thirty year old 6”. I may buy a very slightly used 6 1/2” just in case………After 35 years l finally got a new 3 1/4” planer. Can’t go wrong with Makita tools. Just bought my wife a 3x21 Makita belt sander. What do you have in the way of beam saw, slick and timber framing chisels? Blessings
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 3 ай бұрын
I bought the planner off EBay out off Japan - still wasn’t cheap but third of the price compared to new. I also got a used 16 5/16” Makita circular saw. I have not purchased any slick and framing chisels. This design doesn’t have any fancy joinery. But maybe I should have the chisels to clean things up and make them fit better. What would you recommend?? I have been looking at Barr Specialty tools out of Idaho. But I could use some direction if you have any tips. 😁

I use logs exactly like that all the time. Run the tip of your chainsaw along the length of the tree just through the bark. You can then use a long digging bar to take off huge chunks of the bark at a time. I can debark a burnt 30” 20 ft fit in 5 minutes ending up in a clean tree

you know one thing I was thinking as to why you put frost-free water pipe there with elect pipe is because I think it will be where guys have high tunnel and the garden bed to grow food but that is my thought

Hi, Wade- Good guess… Definitely going to have some fenced in garden areas. Also might build a small cabin over that direction. - depends on how this project goes 😁

How are you liking your power lift? Thinking about getting one. Talked with the owner and he said that he’s working on having the display facing the operator. I may wait. And that he’s looking at having a little faster motor installed.

Hi, Tom - We definitely like the power lift. Erik and I have adapted to the work flow and the slower speed doesn’t seem to slow us down. I would probably wait for the updates- faster motor and rear facing. 😁
