In this video, Greg and Erik prep the slab for the concrete pour - they get it level, add foam, vapor barrier, and rebar. Then comes the pour - during the pour one of the hoses breaks and thankfully nobody was hurt. It's on video and we share it from a few perspectives - it definitely sprayed the concrete guy and made a few others jump. Thankfully, no one got hurt. Hope you enjoy this video that takes a future slab from dirt to a concrete slab! And now, the building can begin!
Here's the concrete slab pour from last summer!
• Pouring A Concrete BAR...
Did you know we are building our barn house out of wood that we are milling on our own sawmill?! If you haven't followed along with our BARN Build, (which is now our barn house build) make sure to check out that series in our playlists. We finished the slab last summer, we milled most of the lumber needed over this past winter and are now starting to prepare to put in another slab for our garage and the rest of the house.
Here is the video where we share our barn plans. Our plans are from @BarnGeek . We are excited to build one of his beautiful barns and turn it into our home.
• Why Do We Think WE CAN...
***We are also so excited to have completed our sawmill cover enclosure (sawmill shed). Definitely check out our Sawmill Playlist to watch it all happen. We have shared the process of building our sawmill cover from the very beginning. We have a Woodland Mills HM130 Max sawmill and we live in North Idaho. The sawmill cover / sawmill shed is vital to continue milling for our barn build in the winter months, but it will also be a great way to keep out of the sun during the summer months, and of course all of the rain, in between!
Here is a link to the video that shares the sawmill cover / sawmill shed build from start to finish:
• Sawmill Cover Build - ...
Here are the specs on the sawmill cover / sawmill shed we built:
3 posts in the front
4 posts in the back
Overall dimensions are 15 feet wide by 36 feet long
Longest beam is 28 feet
Front part of the lean to roof is 11'9" and back is 8'
It will have a 3 :12 pitch
Posts and beams are going to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
We have shared the entire build!

Concrete is hard work. You and Erik did a great job of getting ready and the crew did a great job with the concrete. Looking forward to seeing the bents being built. Laying them out on the nice flat concrete makes it easier and more accurate. Making good progress. Thanks for bringing us along

Thanks Mike! Seemed a lot easier than the first time- advantage of knowing more the second time helped a lot. We plan on building off sawhorses- our older backs think it would be easier. But at least we have plenty of flat concrete to work off of. You’re always welcome to join us 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods I wish I was closer, I would enjoy spending a week helping. Sawhorses are a good idea. As I get older, I have noticed 2 things. #1 the ground keeps getting further away and #2 gravity is getting stronger

I don’t mind long videos. It’s more educational to see the whole process in one video. Thanks for documenting this for us. Looking forward to wood construction. Cheers, Pete A. Australia.

Hi, Pete- Last year we broke it up into a couple of shorter videos- I agree that this tells the story better. We are looking forward to seeing some Timbers hitting the slab. Thanks for watching. 😁

I have poured and formed a lot of concrete in 22 years. Slabs sidewalks, curbs steps and other things. But you and Eric done a phenomenal job of prepping that slab. Congrats great video thank you.

Howdy y’all- quite a bit of work getting ready for the concrete. You and Eric did a top notch job with everything. I know it’s a relief to have the concrete poured. Now it’s time to sharpen up your slick and framing chisels razor sharp. Did you get a beam saw? You may have mentioned it already. I know you found a nice planer. Sure would be fun to get in this and get some Idaho sawdust in my pockets. It’s exciting for me to watch you guys doing this. I feel a kindred spirit with y’all. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t go as fast as you want it to. The fit of the joinery is vital in timber framing. The bents will be in the most stress during the raising. Hope all of y’all have a great weekend. God bless

Hi, Paul- It definitely feels good to have the concrete poured. Hard for me not to be focused on the next steps but definitely a turning point. I ended up getting a Makita beam saw - used but should be good to go. Idaho sawdust is always available 😁

Talk to you plumber and see if you local code will permit you to move all your vents to the underside of the eves eliminating roof penetrations. also run all bathroom vents to eves further eliminating roof penetrations. Makes for a sounder roof and much more attractive finished home. Ray

What’s the reason for not covering the pipes with the foam board. Huge slab, best of luck. Is Erik your son?
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 2 ай бұрын
Hi, Tom- From what I understand- the foam around the pipe is to allow it to move independently. So, if the slab heaves - it doesn’t break the pipe underneath the slab. Erik is my brother’n law and we went to school together. 🤣 Thanks for watching!

Nice prep work and pour by crew, how come no Pex?
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 2 ай бұрын
Hi, Glen- Pex would have been a good idea if we would have known that this was going to be our house. This started as a barn shop and we just put two inches of foam board down. Most of this pour is garage and mechanical room so it didn’t make sense. But, sure would have been nice! 😁

Looking good. Concrete slab in cold climates usually have a 2-4' foam board ring around the outside of the foundation. I may very well have missed it, but has this been already added or are you planning to add it?
@ourdreaminthewoods
@ourdreaminthewoods 2 ай бұрын
Hi, KJ- I wasn’t planning on adding foam boards to the sides. I don’t have a stem wall just the six inch slab and piers. No one suggested that but might come back to bite me?? 😁

@@ourdreaminthewoods you will likely have some thermal leaking, usually hot air out in your climate if you don't add it. I'm surprised the design doesn't call for it.
