Mexico, or rather Latin America, had its own Milkchan around the same time. What I mean by that is that they also got an untranslatable Japanese comedy anime and turned into an improvisational shitshow many remember fondly to this day. There’s an anime called Dotto Koni-Chan which had so many Japanese cultural references that they had to make sense with Mexican cultural references. There are some instances, though, in which they completely forgot to improvise and followed the direct translation making absolutely no sense at all unless you understand some Japanese. For an instance, there was a character that had a curse similar to a werewolf; in Japanese, the joke was that his name was Oookami, misspelling of the Japanese word for wolf, Ookami. When the character is introduced, they showed the name written in Katakana, to which another character responded, “your name is misspelled, did you know that? They kept that in the Mexican dub.

Would you believe that the straight dub, full of japense pop culture references actually got translated in Spanish with all the pop culture shit UNLOCALIZED!? @@angelinacamacho8575 I'd say that it was because most of the anime shown in Animax was dubbed in Venezuela, and while that country had been in the dubbing industry for many year, they were mostly relegated to cartoons and some live-action shows, there were and still are plenty of talented voice actors in Venezuela, but they had very little experience without anime, aside from shows like The Slayers and Shurato. That's why some of their dubs made for Animax for shows such as Galaxy Angel, Di Gi Charat Nyo, Burst Angel, Speed Grapher, Excel Saga and some others sounded kind of weird. Mexico, on the other hand, took a show called Dotoki Koni-chan, a show that already has tons of weird Japanese humor, and completely rewrote the script and added a lot of Mexican and Latin American references and lots of ad-libs by the VAs and it became a cult hit among Latin American anime fans that grew up in the early 2000s Animax did dub some shows to Mexico, like BLOOD+ and Renewal of Evangelion at least, but the majority was dubbed in Venezuela

What a neat informative video. Aside from all of the cool info you've gone and dug up I had NO IDEA there was a more enjoyable dub for this, I always just accepted the boring nature of milk-chan... Thanks, rebel-taxi!

Yo rebel, have you ever thought about bobobo, its another anime that changed a ton of its dub. I feel like its got to be like a childhood fever dream, it would come on toonami right after naruto and the 4kids one piece and was a complete mindfuck every time.

People hate the dragon maid dub, but praise the ever loving crap out of the ghost stories dub.

I love the tangents in this video because this felt like discovering how Lemon Demon/Niel Cicirega made like a bunch of random songs from my childhood.

i forgot all about super milk chan. i think i speak for many when i say i was indirectly inspired by this art style, mostly through other's work that was inspired by it. it's got the vibrancy of old 60s/70s hannah barbera cartoons with the bold linework and crisp vectors of the then modern flash age, resulting in complete and utter eye candy.

I remember seeing this thing recently on an old adult swim vhs recording I had on my computer and I was very confused at first lol

I honestly tried the joke dub and it just wasn't for me. At times, it felt like they were trying too hard especially with the unfunny live action skits. At least stoner humor was untouched territory for me but rewatching the original JPN audio and straightforward ENG dub after learning more about Japanese pop culture in the mid 10s actually fascinated me. I guess it's an "acquired" taste thing.
