As someone with anaphylaxis allergies, Benadryl has literally saved my life on multiple occasions, by buying me a little time to get an epi pen. Seeing this video title had me like :0 . I’ve had many allergists, including ones that were literally top of their field, and all of them Swore by Benadryl. I feel like we’re not talking about the fact that Benadryl is super important for people with severe allergies.

This is so surprising to me: diphenhydramine is rarely used for that in Aus, and is specifically recommended against because the sedative effect can make it unclear what's the drug and what's the allergy in an emergency. Cetirizine is used instead, or sometimes fexofenadine.

Same - but what actually is it about Benadryl that makes it better for severe allergic reactions compared to other allergy medicine?
@okcoolbro3

@@EPfruitbooterBenadryl works faster within minutes where other allergy meds can take up to 1-3 hours to work. So if in an emergency aka your throat closing benadryl will work faster but obviously you will have to be monitored during it because of drowsiness. Also an epi is still recommended and usually a trip to the hospital or doctor right after. As someone with a several allergy same benadryl has saved me a couple times. That's why I always carry my inhalers, benadryl, and epi with me because my lungs and body don't like air sometimes. 😂

As someone who has talked to many doctors over the course of my nearly lifelong struggle with chronic insomnia, I can tell you: doctors need to do better. The only doctors that ever took me seriously just put me on drugs MUCH worse than Benadryl, even after I told them I’m not looking for a quick fix, I’m looking for a treatment. Why is it so hard for doctors to take insomnia seriously when it is detrimental to the lives of the people who suffer from it????

@@justahugenerd1278 Exactly. Medication as a sleeping aid (especially on a constant basis) is a last resort when everything else fails. I e.g. have to take an aid for it, as I can't fall asleep, sleep through or even feel tired on occasion without it (sometimes I can't even sleep when taking the aid, yay - helped me a ton to actually get sleep tho so I'm not complaining), obviously we tried a lot of things previously (including but not limited to changing lifestyle aspects, reducing screen time especially in the evening and so on). I also don't know why people are so persistent on medication as sleeping aid out of choice without even talking to doctors (if freely available in the region they live in), all of them have the potential of addiction, overall making it a vicious cycle to get rid of - not to mention the side effects some of them may have (the one I take e.g. is usually being used in a quite a bit higher dosis for schizophrenia, so something you'd normally not want to even play with if you don't absolutely have to as it still maintains a small potion of its normal case use effect).

As a person with many food and environmental allergies, Benadryl has been a life saver for me. Using it has helped me to avoid using my Epi-pen many, many times. When you use the Epi-pen, you usually have to stay in the E.R. for a few hours to be monitored for a "rebound effect", which can happen in anaphylaxic reactions.

Fun fact: benadryl is the main drug we use for chemotherapy reactions. We use a IV form and tablets. It is fast acting and(keep in mind given with many other drugs) works best for a allergic reaction. We do require a driver because iv has even more drowsiness side effects. But the fear about benadryl doesn't help. Chemotherapy works against cancer. But it is tough if the body, and certain drugs, while they work against the cancer, are highly reactive. People are already scared of chemotherapy, we can't have them being afraid of the pre-meds as well. I work in a hem/onc infusion room

Just about to say something similar to this! I have MS and get Benadryl plus a steroid for my infusion premedication. I'm already worried about cognitive function and don't enjoy the drowsiness side effect as someone who struggles with fatigue, but I understand that I don't abuse benadryl or use it as a sleep aid. All medication should be used as indicated, at the lowest effective dose, and when no lifestyle changes can fix the issue. I was shocked when I heard my own roommate used it as a sleep aid NIGHTLY! I hope the sudden media attention doesn't scare away legitimate use, and hopefully brings more attention to further studies to understand long term impact on its use

Speaking of IV Benadryl, one time I received this before an endoscopy in addition to Versed and one other medication that I can’t recall. The fast IV push of the Benadryl sent me into an indescribably horrific full blown panic attack!!! It was easily the top most distressing moment/feeling of my 52 years on this planet ! We had to re-schedule the endoscopy in the OR with an Anesthesiologist and they used propofol. I don’t recall any of it. The second and last time I got IV Benadryl was when I was having an allergic reaction to Clindamycin. IV Benadryl was one of a few medications I received. Once again I absolutely spiraled into a panic that there are no earthly words for! I will never allow IV Benadryl into my veins for the rest of my life! I certainly don’t take the OTC pills either. I get severe insomnia, restless legs and magnified anxiety. Does anyone know why I react to Benadryl this way, especially if it’s a fast IV push?

My son and I are allergic to pork, specifically an enzyme pigs make but humans don't. I can tell you, Benedryl works better and faster than other antihistamines when I'm having a reaction. My son's reactions are more dramatic than mine. He's been hospitalized several times. Every time, the ER gave him intravenous Benedryl in conjunction with epinephrine to stabilize his condition. Having a major reaction is stressful and the sleepiness is helpful in relieving that stress. The last benefit I can thing of is there is a topical version of Benedryl that's readily available. It's great for mild reactions that just cause a rash. I can smear some on the rash and go on with my day. The active ingredient in Zyrtech is Cetirizine which is a second generation antihistamines. I think it does pass the blood brain barrier (not sure) but it is so much more specific to H1 receptors (the true target of antihistamines) than first generation antihistamines that is almost does not interact with neurotransmitter receptors (dopamine, acetylcholine, serotonin,...). It is specific enough to not exhibit anticholinergic effects. Although it might make you slightly more drowsy, it is (at least in Europe) much more affordable than third generation options and widely available.

Benadryl drowsiness only effects me for the 4-6 hrs that it works. However, any 24 hr allergy med will make me drowsy for the whole 24 hrs. So I use Benadryl and/or Sudafed (the one you get from the pharmacy). I only take them at night. Because even the Sudafed makes me drowsy. I have to rely on EmergenC, hot teas, cough drops and essential oils for the daytime.

I’ve had trouble falling asleep my entire life. For a period in my teen years I was using Benadryl fairly regularly to fall asleep. Fortunately my doctor turned me on to melatonin when I was 16 (and luckily my psychiatrist gave me more info on how melatonin works). Between a super low dosage of melatonin and better sleep hygiene I now don’t use any other sleep aids.

@@aethylwulfeiii6502 I agree it's disturbing. To be fair, it makes sense to me that there would be a lack of diagnostic testing because the mind is just such a complex machine and we don't really understand it. If trying to treat an issue comes down to trial and error and a doctor isn't sure something is going to work, as long as they are upfront about the potential risks and benefits, I think trying different meds could be worthwhile. But there's just such a potential for people to make outrageous and unsubstantiated health claims and put people in danger for profit.

Because of the sedative and mind-altering effects of diphenhydramine, it is not recommended to give to children because there is increased risk of mortality. It’s recommended that you give them Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec and can give double the recommended daily dose for acute allergic reactions. On the flip side, kids can also get super hyper while taking diphenhydramine, which may be due to the brain-involving aspects of the medication.

I take Benadryl as just one part of my allergy treatment course. I take it to specifically not only help me with an allergy flare but to also help me sleep during that allergy flare. Meaning I only take it when my allergies r flared and I only take it at night because I know it will knock me out and I am relying on that to help both treat my allergies as well as help me get some sleep at night during that flare at the same time (due to my allergies preventing me from being able to get a restful night's sleep). During the day however I use a different one, I use the non drowsy allergy meds (prescribed by my doctor) instead. I also use creams for skin allergic reactions (I suffer from more than one type of allergy). And I also am currently getting allergy shots to try and help actually cure me of the allergy (and so far it seems to be working).

Unfortunately i do have to eat benadryl every once in awhile to fight Mast Cell flare ups. Luckily not often, but its either one benadryl or a literal handful of new age antihistamines to get my flare up under control. I would rather save my liver and kidneys the issue of possible toxification though. One guy above said it best. Its a balance. Asthma can cause dementia and benadryl stops asthma... so if you need it... well drat, but it some cases its a give or take.

I feel ya, during pollen season I break out in hives when birch and oak pollen are bad on top of it triggering respiratory issues with my asthma. Benadryl is the only drug able to calm the reaction, I wouldn’t be able to sleep let alone function without it. I used to see an allergist before insurance wouldn’t cover it anymore and my allergy panel is terrifying. Allergy shots were helping but like I said insurance. I’m on a few different types of allergy medicines year round that fluctuate how many I have to take by what’s in season. My doctors are well aware of what I take and understand in my situation I have no other option. Benadryl is not optional in spring and late summer.

The person doing a study trying to prove their case, when all evidence is currently anecdotal at best and currently cannot prove a cause ESPECIALLY with how many autoimmune diseases and other chronic health issues exist that could be the actual root causes of dementia.... Is obviously going to tell you to get off it. They're biased, and they're speaking from a place of bias, especially without current evidence and proof, and especially without being ABLE to prove its not underlying conditions causing people's dementia. Youre saying you listened to a biased doctor, who is trying to prove something is causing something else.... When the majority of chronic Benadryl users have underlying conditions beyond normal allergies. Doesn't say much.

Another amazing and informative video. I appreciate the clearly non biased evidence of both sides and that he just opens up the conversation for his viewers to learn more about the topic and research more on our own. It’s scary because when I was little, I was recommended Benadryl to help me fall asleep as I had severe ADHD and insomnia/nightmares. It was the only thing that worked at the time, but as the years went on, my nightmares and drowsiness became too severe that we stopped it. I am now weaning off my current sleep aid that I’ve been taking since I was roughly 16 years old (I am 24 now) - Trazadone. And wouldn’t you guess it, trazadone is prescribed as an off label sleep aid (it’s actually an antidepressant). Very interesting stuff. I hope Dr. Mike continues to cover more medications and possibly sleep studies as well! Thanks again for the informative video!

Yes, black mold is toxic, especially if it's one of the more toxic sorts - the mycotoxins can cause damages on multiple organs (lungs, neversystem and so on), not to say it's generally poisonous an if you got it in your home it should be taken care of properly asap. In fact, here landlords here absolutely have to make sure that appartments are clean of it, if there is cases it'll have to get removed and afterwards it'll be tested if it comes from wrong ventilation (essentially error of the party living there), construction damages on the house (which have to be resolved immediately if it's the case) or just an unlucky case that may happen - which also goes to the degree of landlords actively having to lower rent if issues occur.

One Claritin will make me an unproductive human for a good 24 hours. So I just avoid antihistamines completely unless I'm having some kind of allergic reaction that's really causing me problems. Normal seasonal hay fever, I just live with. It's not debilitating, just uncomfortable. If I do feel like I need some help, I take half a Benadryl. Thank you Dr. Mike for helping me be aware of Benadryl. I've been taking it to help me sleep at night bc melatonin just doesn't work for me anymore. But I'll def ask my primary care doc for an alternative.

Indeed, many many years of loving doctor Mike. I dont think anything Dr. Mike could do would make me hate him. One of my favorite things about him in the past is that listens to people when they cross analize his fact sometimes and fixes problems if he makes them too!

Thanks ! Taking diphenhydramine as sleep aid sometimes. Taken with from the US 🙈. It’s also an active ingredient in ‘Dormidina’ freely to get in Spanish pharmacies.

Kaiser hospital in Irvine CA would give me Benadryl in my IV and I hated it. The last time the nurse did not even tell me he was giving it to me. I would have told him not to. And why? Why give it to an ER patient? To shut me up and make me sleep? I disliked the sudden onset of drowsiness that made me feel like I was falling into spiraling tunnel.

I have MCAS, and benadryl is the go to in the hospital for major allergic reactions. I used to take remicade, a very potent IV medication, and I was allergic go it. They'd do IV benadryl and IV steroids at the same time to prevent the reaction. When my face swells shut due to an MCAS reaction, the only thing that touches it is massive doses of steroids and benadryl, plus Zyrtec. Benefits and risks, always talk to your doc about the benefits and risks of meds. For me, benefits far outweigh the risks, but they may not for others.

Hey. My dad has a chronic illness, and i'm not sure what- but tonight he collapsed, hit his head, and passed out slumped over his desk on the ground, while throwing up. My mom called the ambulance and I did my first chest compressions on him. I was so shaky but I managed. Then the ambulance arrived. I don't know if he is okay. I am 13 years old, but mature for my age. Please help me pray for him. EDIT: He passed away.

My useless superpower is an immunity to the drowsiness of Diphenhydramine. Found out on accident after I used it for an eye rash and drove myself to the clinic, as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as ever. The doctor joked that he wanted to put a biopsy of me under a microscope. 🤭

Same here. Doctors don’t believe when I say it doesn’t make me drowsy, it makes me more alert.
