In this video, I show some wobble or resonance from worn out steering parts on my 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ, names Fungus. This could be considered a mild case of death wobble and I cover what I did to fix the wobble.

The term “death wobble” on these leaf sprung front ends makes me chuckle. My old XJ would make you Pooh when that death wobble would start after a bump at 65. Like driving a football.

This is what I was thinking, I’ve experienced death wobble in my buddy’s JK at about 60 after hitting a bump, you literally have to slam on the brakes and come to a complete stop to regain control of the vehicle.

I was able to resolve a wobble by replacing my steering damper, 2000 TJ Sahara. Thank you for your videos! Been very helpful as I tinker and repair mine when needed and use you as a trusted source!

Found your channel some years ago when I was re-building the front end of my 92. I would recommend if your on a budget to try balancing tires first, as after I did the complete front end components it was still vibrating pretty bad. Balanced tires and it turned out as good as a sprung YJ could get. Either way the front end components needed attention, happy I found your channel helped me a great deal with the jeep.

My wife just went through the whole death wobble experience last week in her JK . It scared the crap out of her . I knew it needed a steering stabilizer due to hers was leaking a little . So I sent it to $ wheel parts so they could look at it . Well it turned out to be really bad upper and lower ball joints. I went ahead and had them replace them since I couldn't get to it . Well $1,100.00 later with new ball joints , steering stabilizer and a alignment and its better than new according to my wife . Problem solved . Glad you got fungus's problem fixed . Win , win for both of us . Until next time take care my friend .

Can you please show us some tricks how to improve braking? My emergency stop distance with 33“ tires is really bad.

Yeah, breaking isn't good with oversized tires. I have idea of what I want to do, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Hate to tell you this but -- you haven't corrected your DW. You've hid it under a bandaid. While I am not denying your front end needed work, your DW is coming from your oversize tires. Those little Dana's, 44s and smaller along with their entire associated systems (tie rods linkages etc), were never designed for that kind of rotational mass. What happens is that mass gets to a certain harmonic (rotational speed) and will cut loose - as those tires flex and expand (a tire is a constantly moving egg shape when rotating) that mass gets moving, generating energy that will cause excessive wear on the steering linkage and eventually into DW. Do not get me wrong, you were absolutely correct in replacing worn parts (though Im curious what kinda shape your Track bar is in) - what Im driving at is those parts in and of themselves will not cause DW. How do I know this? Ive had DW form on brand new Dodge 3/4 and 1 tons when I pulled wrench for Ma Mopar. After a LOT of hunting, I did nail the cause - the factory tires (which were 1 ton Load Range E rated tires) were being swapped out for big mud tires (which were Load Range D) - too soft of sidewall which in turn allowed the tires to generate the DW on a literally brand new unit, dozens of units over. When you go to upgrade your tires, go for stiffer 1 ton rated tires, and if at all possible, smaller. Or buy a 1 ton. Flip side of the coin, my 13 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited, 75,000+ miles on all original suspension (including a leaked out steering damper) and Ive never, ever had DW - I run 1 ton tires set to 40PSI cold for highway running. My current rubber is Hankook DynaPro MT 265/70R17 in Load Range E; third set of mudders on my Jeep. Anywho, didn't mean to be a downer but just to give you a heads up that you may run into the same problem in the near future without fresh treads. Ill lurk around, bit of a Jeep fan myself.
