My DW story... I have a 93 Grand Cherokee. At around 30,000, it started the death wobble. I have a car lift and have done my own mechanic work all my life. So I figured I have this. Up it went and I did everything I have done to hundreds of vehicles for years to check all suspension and front drivetrain. Everything seemed tight and unworn. My wife's dad bought the Jeep new and passed shortly after. Her mother drove the jeep to the store and back till she passed and we inherited it. I know the thing was not put in four wheel drive very many times in it's life. So basically what I am saying is the Jeep was just like new when we got it with less than 20,000 miles. Back to the story of dw. I couldn't find anything wrong so I took it to an alignment shop that I have used for years and have always had good service from them. They couldn't find anything wrong so we drove it up the road. At 45 mph it went into the dw. The guy said he had never seen anything like this. He checked everything and did an alignment on it and it still, dw... After several attempts, he said he determined the track bar was the problem. $180. later he said it was fixed. I picked it up and on the way home it was still wobbling. Went right back and got my money back and found another shop. Same thing, not a clue what caused it but said I needed to replace all my bushings and tie rods. I asked why and they said they were all worn enough that they were all causing the problem. I didn't buy it. Now if I would go from 40 to 60 under heavy throttle, I could get past the wobble and it would run all day. But between 45 and 60 it would almost always wobble and violently!!! Eventually I replaced every part that can be replaced including tires twice because they would wear out fast. 4 or 5 shops tried to fix it and no one knew what to do. After putting up with the problem for several years and spending probably $2,000, I was thinking about what was going on when it was wobbling. I had even stuck my head out the window to watch the tire. What I decided was the toe in was causing the problem. I know it was aligned to specs at least 5 times but something was still not right! I got my tape measure out and a couple of pieces of angle iron and set the toe in to less than 1/8th of an inch. It was over 3/8ths when I first checked it. It has now been over 100,000 miles later and never once have I experienced the DW! I figured out the geometry of these suspensions cause this problem when they get to a certain harmonics. With the toe in adjusted in to far, the left tire will try to go right at a certain harmonic and when it gives in to traction making it slip, then the right tire will be trying to go left and at just the right harmonics the fight for traction gets to be more than the tires can support and they begin fighting and they start the wobble. Don't know if this is a good explanation, but when I took almost all the toe in out of my alignment, it fixed the problem. Even with 31 inch tires the wobble never came back. I now have over 160,000 and it runs and drives like a new one.... Almost.... lol...

It would’ve been better if they’d just said it was a brand new tank since they already threw new parts at all the other problems, but no they said they just cleaned it up.

So let me see if I got this straight...I can fix my death wobble by rebuilding the entire front end, with an extra 2" lift, adding a performance kit, a winch and a specially customized winch plate. Did I miss anything? I was thinking that a snorkel might also help.

It's caused by caster angle because of lift springs rotating the axle / ball joint angle easy fix longer lower control arm length! Fixed!

Alright , so death wobble can be pretty scary but the fix is really simple , the culprit is usually one of the components in the steering system so let me start by ripping the seats out and installing these bad boys here, also this custom exhaust might not make the wobble go away but man will it sound great, ok and the next thing is this custom GPS that might not take wobble away but it will sure guide you where to go with many great features alright last but not least these LED lights are just what you will need to see clearly and not hit anything if you lose controle during death wobble

You didn't check the main ball joints and hub assemblies? I agree the tie rod and drag link can be most common, but you should have do a total diagnostic.

As a parts guy for almost 50 years, DW can be caused by just about anything being worn or not aligned. But it’s probably a track bar…lol

...i replaced the STEERING STABILIZER and lucky for me it stopped (fact) try it!! --> its the little shock tucked vertically into the front end suspension of the 2004

The wobble is definitely not caused by lifting or oversized tires. Lifts can promote a wobble but it’s not the cause. I’ve seen brand new JL’s wobble while stock! Chrysler has a defect in their steering system & apparently after all these years they haven’t fixed it. My 98 XJ wobbled while stock too. 80% of the time its caused by a warn out track bar. I added a full suspension lift, 33’s & upgraded my track bar. No more wobble. You don’t have to replace the whole steering system that’s silly

yeah cause we all got plasma cutters. and CNC machines. most of use Jeep owners can't just dump 2000 to get shit done. we do it our self little by little. I wish I could get help. I got a99 Cherokee sport. I got it for free from girlfriend. so I'm just trying to get it a working truck first. then I want to get a 4 inch lift then take it from there . I'm trying to do as much work as I can and that ain't much. but I'm learning . I just wish I knew a gear head in central Jersey. to give me a hand here and there.

step one - buy a 20 ft utility trailer and 1ton truck to tow it cause your gonna need to goto the parts store and get half a jeeps worth of boxes, then an engine management computer tricker worth more then the rig its going in, then a CNC table to build a half assed winch bumper! if you wanna figure out death wobble go get the wife to jump behind the wheel in the driveway and wobble it back and forth while you look for play in the tie rod/ steering connections, no problems there? jack er up and check the wheel bearings and ball joints and track bar bushings, no problem there try using a different set of tires, swap with a buddy for a couple days does that fix it maybe yours are out of balance or just too large for the setup? no problems yet last resort get an alignment and jam 2 extra large steering dampeners on it!

This video used the death wobble repair as clickbait and now they're paying for it in the comments. The fact of the matter is it's a performance upgrade show so everyone needs to get a little less butt hurt

The death wobble is caused by the solid front axle, Chrysler knew this when they bought out AMC Motors, Chrysler realized it was cheaper to pay the lawsuits then to stop using solid front axle but instead put a little tiny sticker on the windshield visor basically saying that Jeeps are dangerous at highway speeds and are basically not roadworthy.

Tie rod ends are more common than ball joints, especially at the pitman arm. I'd wager that they tested the ball joints since they aren't exactly difficult to tell if one is bad.
