After using this Heat It device for a couple months and on multiple camping trips where my family and I were all bitten by mosquitoes dozens of times, I've determined whether or not it actually works. In this review I'll cover the pros, cons, and how this gadget works so you can decide if it's something you really want.

Hmm, i am using the original of this idea (BiteAway) and it works by "destroying" the proteins of the mosquito venom, not "tricking your body" and "forgetting" that you got bitten Anyway, it works very well and reliefs the itch.

Interesting, I'll have to check that one out. There's a good chance that my highly unscientific description of "tricking" is nothing more than me using a word I know to describe a process I don't understand. 😂 So maybe it's that protein business you mention.

I've been going old school for some time now where I take a spoon and throw it some hot water. I'll take it out and cool it down to the point of hot, not burning hot; and then apply it to my skin. That usually takes care of it and knocks out the itch. But I've been eyeing this gadget when I'm out and about and don't have hot water on hand.

Back in the 80's, when I used to get bit, I would put my lit cigarrette as close to the bite as I could handle for a few seconds and it ALWAYS made the itch go away. One of the downsides of quiting is I no longer have a small source of heat handy for when I am bit. What an amazing thing. I heard that the heat changes the protiens in the saliva into something that no longer itches you. Hmmm

The guy states that you need another impulse to react to...so by pressing your fingernail to your skin very hard and creating pain, you're doing the same sort of thing. It is reactive rather than proactive. I hate spraying down with anything deet, but it works. As for Thermacells I use them also… but all drive them away before to are “bitten” and avoid the risk of viruses through the mosquitoes mouth parts. Same for tics. Granted, not having an itch is good, but unless it penetrates the skin and break down blood born viruses at the sub atomic level… I can’t get into it.

In Louisiana I get bitten by mosquitoes up to hundreds of times per day. I no longer get swelling but some of the mosquitoes sting right through bluejeans even. Repellents only work if you cover yourself with chemicals every 20 minutes. Often repellents do nothing. I don`t use cell phones here because only one carrier has a very weak signal that only works outside and I`m on a fixed income and costs of everything have greatly increased. I`d rather get more solar panels, fruit trees, seeds, preps or food.

I heard something similar a few months ago and have been using my hair dryer, which stays plugged in all the time anyways, so all I have to do is walk to it and to be honest, if I'm itching, I'm probably going to the bathroom anyways to get something to put on it. As awesome as it works, I hesitate to to tell a lot of people, because I'm afraid they will use it on children and burn them, since the spot needs to get really hot to neutralize the protein in the mosquito's saliva. It works on spots where I've removed a tick, too, if it hasn't been attached too long. I turn the hair dryer on high and get the bite spot as hot as I can stand by letting the hot air blow on it. I keep the hair dryer at least 6 inches away from the skin and the second it starts to feel too hot I back off. Pause a few seconds. Repeat. I do it half dozen times. If after a few minutes it starts to feel itchy again, I repeat the hair dryer thing. I am VERY reactive to bites and stings and this works like a charm, so I can see how this device would work as advertised and it's portable!

Ticks bite and stay in the skin to fill with your blood, they are best removed with a specialist tick remover otherwise you risk leaving the mouth part behind. The other thing to remember in all cases is that this device will not protect against insect borne infections such as malaria and limes disease. It’s designed to stop the production of histamine within the skin. I always take antihistamine tablets for bug bites.
@twloughlin
@twloughlin Ай бұрын
@@snapdragon2441 I appreciate all this information, but it doesn't quite get to the heart of my question. Since this device produces enough heat such that an average person will find it painful, does it produce enough heat such that, if I found a tick crawling on my skin, the heat from this device would kill it? Also, in the past, one remedy for removing an embedded tick was to take the end of a match and apply it to the tick immediately after extinguishing the flame, in the hope that the tick would back out from the heat. I don't think this method is recommended anymore, but I wonder if, with a device such as this, this older method of tick removal might be more effective than the head of a hot match. I am sure the company doesn't recommend such an application for its product, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't be effective in this regard.
@savage6394

@@snapdragon2441. Wouldn’t you rather apply heat to a specific bite location than ingest an antihistamine?
@theoutdoorempire
@theoutdoorempire Ай бұрын
Good question, but I don't know the "real answer." Might take some more research. In my experience, ticks usually induce a different reaction than mosquitos or fly bites. Not sure if tick bites cause a histamine release in the skin that could be countered with heat from the Heat It. Even if it does, you'd, of course, still have to remove the tick first. I don't see how it would prevent any disease transfer from a tick that is possible, and the company doesn't specifically say it works for ticks. I'm inclined to believe it doesn't help for ticks, but not 100% sure.
