@@sheripetrey4257 To me it speaks of regret & not truly appreciating those beautifully random moments which life gifts us from time to time. My conclusion is that ignorance truly is bliss. I felt this way when first hearing this song in my youth. I've always seemed to be tethered to nostalgia...even prior to having even lived enough to have any.

Bob was a genius when it came to wordplay. I've heard this, and it might just be legend, but Bob sang the line in studio and told the band "I don't think that's proper English, I don't like how it sounds, I'm going to cut it". The band stared at him with their mouths open and said "Noooooo!"

My first night in Japan. I've got jet lag so it's 3:00 in the morning and I'm in bed, wide awake, listening to Casey Kasem's American Top 40 on the Armed Forces Radio Network. Casey plays "Against the Wind." I've heard the song before (Against the wind, yada, yada, yada) but I'd never LISTENED to the song. But laying there in the dark, wide awake with the radio playing low, I listened to Seger's lyrics. The next time I was in a store that sold CDs I bought the "Against the Wind" CD, because damn it, somehow Seger had been spying on my life and wrote a song about it. Still one of my favorite tunes.

In this song, as an older man, he reflects back through his life's journey as a young man to now being in the last years of his life. We all do this when we reach that age, when we say "I'm no kid anymore. I'm not able to do certain things the way I once was able to." It's just part of life. The song is "songumentary" about his life. His youth; his relationship with is first girlfriend. His days as a rising touring musician; the strangers he thought were his friends( his promoters, managers, agents etc). Then his later life as an A lister touring musician running his own production company; deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out (o his albums and live tour). It about his evolution from a young boy into manhood, into stardom.

Many times Bob Seger wrote about life's experiences. Personally this is my theme song through life, and I never forget its meaning because I've never stopped running against the wind. That's not bad for a 74 year old. 2 yr in college, 4 years in the Navy (1.5 Vietnam), 2 more years in college to get my degree. Worked for a company 37.5 years, retired because I was fed up. Two sons graduated from College, and my wife hates me. Still, I'm running against the wind until I die.

Janey says to me all the time, 'You allow more people to walk on you than anybody I've ever known.' And I always say it's human nature that people are gonna love you sometimes and they're gonna use you sometimes. Knowing the difference between when people are using you and when people truly care about you, that's what "Against the Wind" is all about. The people in that song have weathered the storm, and it's made them much better that they've been able to do it and maintain whatever relationship. To get through is a real victory.

"Against the Wind" explores the space between care and indifference from friends and loved ones. It centers on maturation and memories, like many other Seger songs, and carries a tender, mellow tone. Seger pulled from his high school years as a cross-country runner to form the song's title-a metaphor for growing old. "Against the Wind" became one of Seger's most successful singles, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. It also charted in Canada, Australia, and Belgium. It received high marks from music critics, with many praising Seger's songwriting. The song has been celebrated by generations of contemporary country artists, with covers ranging from Garth Brooks to Brooks & Dunn.

I think the lyric, "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" means: when he didn't know, he was less fearful and more willing to take chances and be adventurous. Not worrying about everything and trying to predict outcomes that may or may not happen that can sometimes leave a person unable to make decisions and stagnate in life. We all run against the wind whether we want to or not.

I think that this song is open to wide interpretation, which is the genius to the writing, and why and how it hits different people different ways. I have always interpreted this as just daily living. We make choices in life. Not everybody in our lives is going to agree with our choices, not matter how major or minor they are. So it could be going against: good advice, bad advice, a friend's advice, personal intuition.... To me it's kind of like a finding-your-way-in-the-world song.

As popular and making the big money but, when they had they're kids he dropped every and come in off the road to raise his kids, his wife worked and he was a stay at home dad, taking them to school and picking them up and cooking and all that!! Great guy!! His kids had always heard from their friends parents how popular they're dad was and how they had heard him in concert. But, after they were grown they kept after him, prove it dad lol so he decided he'd do a short tour to prove he could still pack a venue so he went back out on the road for about 6months with gray hair and all. He promoted it alil bit and took off and his kids got to see they're dad in concert, which I thought was awesome of him to do that for them. He still had it!!!
