new imperial bakery, india’s oldest bakery, 143 year old bakery, kolar gold fields, kgf, karnataka, wood fired oven, veg puff, dil pasand, muffin, coconut biscuit, spicy cookies, vanilla cookies, old fashioned bakes, plum cake, bread, karnataka food trail, kolar food tour, near bengaluru, bangalore, small business, support small business, gourmet on the road, kripal amanna, food lovers tv, food lovers india, truth in food
On a recent road drive through Kolar, we made a detour to Kolar Gold Fields, once famous across the world for its gold mines. The mines have long closed, and the town is now a pale shadow of its former glory. What has endured however is a bakery that first opened in 1880 and still continues to dispense its baked wares in an old school tradition that harks back 143 years! I met its fourth generation owner and also tasted many of the scrumptious treats on offer that are still popular with the inhabitants of this verdant town 70 kilometres from Bengaluru.
Hope you enjoy this one. Take care; stay safe and strong. Happy eating!
Note: I enjoyed most of the baked treats on offer. Standouts for me though were the veg puff, muffin (dilpasand), coconut biscuit, spicy cookies and plum cake.
Biscuits are priced at Rs. 30 for 100gm, the puffs and muffins at Rs. 13, and a loaf of bread, Rs. 30.

My mother, Mrs J.Syed Hussain has worked very hard for the bakery. She has grinded Sugar with her hands, made garam masala using mortar and pestle not mixer and grinder, just to retain the traditional taste. My mother has been a great support in running the Bakery. Mr Ismail is handling the bakery single handedly only from 2005, Till then my father was running the Bakery.

I also remember we used to clean Raisins and Cut Cashews in huge quantity to make plum cakes Especially for Christmas and New Year. Making Cross Buns. It was a big Celebration for us during Christmas and New Year. The Entire bakery would be illuminated with Lights and Cakes of different colours and Designs. It was a feast for the Eyes and our tummies too. Golden Days. Will always miss those days. I love my KGF, my Love and Favourite Destination.

Worth a visit to KGF BAKERY. The people cook one of the simple & best food. All due water in the soil. I think still the water has not spoiled the entire Kolar district. My mother was born & brought up in bangarpet. She brought cooking skill to our house from that soil.😊

Mr.Syed Hussain's Wife used to make masalas for the puffs and masala biscuits, they used to prepare masalas with hands in large quantity as the buisness was very good those days. She used to cut, grate and grind everything manually as there were no machines like what we have today. Nowadays peeling, grating, grinding, Everything has become so Easy, but it was not like that in the good old days. My mother used to get lunch for my father and Run the Bakery for the Remaining Half day till Night. My mother would walk from Andersonpet to Champion Reefs to give lunch to my Father and help him in the buisness.

This is probably one of the oldest bakeries in the country but I'm sure Goa, Surat, Kolkata, parts of Tamil Nadu, and perhaps even Bombay have older bakery traditions, or at least ones that are fairly concurrent. Right now, the oldest one I'm aware of is Dotivala in Surat which is probably the origin of the nankatai

The honesty and humility of his heart is evident in his smile! He carries on his family's legacy without perhaps realizing that he is part of the early contemporary/Colonial Indian history! This is what sustains businesses for generations, apart from the food by itself. His inner contentment and happiness makes him TRULY rich, and all the wealth in the world combined would fall short before his richness! Thank you Ismail bhai for your service!
