PMPO is a marketing scam invented in the 80's by the likes of Amstrad. It has no relation to the RMS capability of the amplifier, although it can be usefull in figuring out the headroom available for very short periods (think the initial crack of a snare hit) without clipping (as long as you have the true RMS capability known). It is simply the maximum instantaneous power output, easily calculable from the power supply voltage to the amplifier output stage, and the speaker impedance. Being generous, assuming the speakers are cheap 8ohm speakers wired in parallel, and the amplifier is a bridged configuration 3000W PMPO can be achieved with a +/-55V supply (boosted from the 12V battery). However I would be surprised if the power supply could sustain this for more than a few milliseconds. So asuming the previous is true, the figures stated in the specification may actually be correct, if completely and utterly useless 😝 Of course this doesn't mean that they aren't compllete Junk. I would be surprised if the units could sustain 50W RMS continuous 🙂

@@GaryKeepItSimple Yeah. That's why I said (in a round about way) it's 'technically' correct. But I agree that PMPO was designed, and is used, to mislead consumers into believing amplifiers/speaker systems can do the impossible. Unfortunately at the low end everyone is doing it, and have been since the 80's, so if you are honest and give actually meaningful figures, you won't sell anything. IMO it's not quite up there with 1,000,000V stun guns and 50,000 lumen torches, it is based on some kind of reality, but it's pretty damn close 🙂 Not as bad as some of the crap 'Audiophile' companies spout though 🤣

Peak music power output. Been touted for as long as I can remember. Sadly, we don't know how long that peak lasts. It would have to last 1/150th of a second at least for the first one to be of any use and 1/30th for the other one. That would be of use incombination with an RMS number. But I don't believe they do anything near that for over a millisecond

It is pure smoke and mirrors. I am aware when Yamaha is Sony say something like this there is a truth to it but the claims of these just make a mockery of the system.
