Two points. First, you could do a super simple algorithm routing of "if I hear the same message twice (not accounting for different TTL) I don't repeat it". Second, this is sort of a solved problem and the Ethernet Spanning Tree Protocol is a working design for establishing optimized routes in a disorganized network.

Even the fancy military mesh radios are best used in small to moderate numbers thats why they tend to be the territory of special teams while regular radios are in general use.

I still think that Meshtastic will be improved upon but I am one that was a little disheartened here in Rural Utah much of my complaint is still instabilities with the hardware or possibly the firmware, nodes going MIA. However, I think I am going to take a break and put up one or a couple RattleGram nodes, maybe a cheap FRS or even a CB in parrot mode, I may or may not use direct audio connections. I played around with that and was happy to see that it was smart enough to realize a previously sent message to prevent Parrot Mode from ping-ponging back and forth.

I live in a valley, and basically can’t get anything out to anyone, and not in the position to set up a solar node on the ridge to bridge. Considering using my wisblok and heltek for some remote garden smart home/monitoring if the situation in my area doesn’t get any better

Everyone's expectations are way higher than reality. The reality is it is orders of magnitude easier to "see" / "ping" a node than to get a message to it. So most nodes you see you cannot message with. As for your RSSI necessary for reliable messaging, you say -120 or below? I'm guessing you mean -120 or higher, less negative. In my experience, reliable messaging is only possible with RSSI -110 SRN -5 or higher (closer to zero). A positive or near positive SNR is nearly a guarantee the message will make it. RSSI -119 or SNR -9 or lower (more negative) is nearly a guarantee of failure. Also, hops are really hard. The less than zero probability of each node is multiplied, rapidly making the chance approach zero. To guarantee a message over hops requires every hop node to have a positive or negative very near zero SNR.

love the blog. great up date on bunch of stuff. the drone footage is great ! the woods reminds me of star wars . very nice. we got Meshtastic to crash in the US at Dayton ham fest in Ohio . go so many nodes. 900 MHz band in USA . we also have a 433 MHz band. so few on that band. works the same just different band plans for each country . 73's

my neighbour had a watermeter install about three weeks ago and since then my node been intermittent with messages turns out the water meter is txing on 869.5 every 10 seconds so wipes out meshtastic i wonder how many people are faced with the same problem

There's quite a few reported issues of EV chargers doing the same as well. It's becoming a busy part of the band and it would seem some manufacturers may not be complying with the duty cycle restrictions on this part of the 869 MHz band.

My Meshtastic node "Nodey McNodeFace' is a bit poorly...orange light is flickering. I am thinking this is not really for me anyway. Bury the node in the garden? I may look into another fad...there are Lora modules on satellites...line of sight is straight up. No need for your antenna to be way up high...just can it see the sky? I'll rummage around for the github link to the firmware (for ESP32 hardware)...

Listening to your comments about routing, my first thought was that meshtastic should consider looking at internet protocol because it's likely that they could at least take inspiration from them. I'll definitely mangle this, but the way public networking works is that each border router (I think this is the right term) assemblesa table, effectively knowing that "that IP is that way", a sign posting effect. You know, I learned this from the security now podcast, so point the developers at Steve Gibson

I have 4 or 5 nodes that i can see with >-120 rssi and can not get any messages out. I do receive them but never can trace or send.... I do live in a urban area so sure that is not helping.

Sounds like they need to copy the move from Hubs to Switches. Routing far more efficient, rather than blast the packet at everything and hope for a response.

Hi Andy I got my hectic capsule which I got thank you for the video you did I getting a really good range 40 50 60 miles from south London I even had a node from Cardiff and the West Midlands I’m not running MQTT looking at were I live I’m 250 feet above sea level is that why I’m getting the ranges. So far I’ve burned through a T-Echo, two V3 and various antenna and components. Meshtastic equipment is really poor quality, and generally unusable. Both the equipment and programming are poor and when it does get working some pillock running a repeater or hidden node kills the mesh locally due to being poorly located and dragging all traffic through them and causing a black hole.
