Your mom is recovering well from her surgery, which is great news. Since you're currently sailing around the world and in Australia, I think it might be a good time to take a break, fly home from Sydney, and spend some time with her in Wales. It’d mean a lot to her and be incredibly therapeutic for everyone.

I am truly grateful that I was able to be with my mom when she passed away. She was given 6 months to live after going to the hospital because she was feeling ill and turned out she had congestive heart failure (a leaking valve that the doctors were unwilling to operate on because of her age and stability). We only have one mom, fellas, it's worth it to go and visit with her and all the better if she's just fine. I pray for you and your mom ,my friends. ✝️🇺🇲🙏

The leading light is white. It’s a ISO light with red and green sectors each side. At sea come in on the compass bearing of the leading line given on the chart. On that bearing sail into harbour until the white light is in sight and keep on course. If it light turns red you are too far to port turn to stb to bring you back to white. If it turns green you are too far to stb bring it back to white keeps you on the safe leading line. This is safer than using gps. Sounding and gps are used as backup. Use navionics tide and current to see times, direction and speed of water in estuary to work out the safe passage and depth over bars etc.

Exact. Too much GPS and not enough « sens du marin ». Prières pour votre maman. Don’t give up. ❤
@TheSailingBrothers
@TheSailingBrothers Ай бұрын
You are right to Francis. Now we have to hard time to think about it and read the comments it's the white light we should have come in on.
Ай бұрын
At 19 .50 you say its a three sector light red , yellow ( white ? ) and green . You came in on the green . surely its the middle sector ( white ) that is safe water ? Green puts you to to starboard of the channel . For example Dartmouth UK you would be on the rocks if you followed green on entering . also on the rocks if you followed red . Happy new year from Devon great sailing from you two ..
@SimonH-s5c
@SimonH-s5c Ай бұрын
You are correct. That light has a white sector with green on starboard side and red to port. It’s a very narrow angle to starboard due to the northerly breakwater so by staying in green the boys were fortunately never far from the intended bearing to safely cross. There are also lead lights on the approach as a secondary check. Might also be prudent to throw the washboards in and pop on the lifejackets too while crossing. That bar is a tricky one for sure. It’s one that I’ve aborted from the seaward side in the past and pushed on for Coffs.
Ай бұрын
@@SimonH-s5c Good reply . I was concerned that viewers would carry forward the idea that green means safe sector . Traffic lights green means go ! but certainly not at sea . That Bar does certainly look difficult . In Devon where I am Salcombe lifeboat was lost on the Bar . So they are not to be underestemated . Bythe way those two are great sailors .
@TheSailingBrothers
@TheSailingBrothers Ай бұрын
Now we think about it you are correct. It should have been the white light to follow. It all makes sense now ✌️

Do you not have a cruising guide? At least buy a subscription to Zulu Offshore so you don’t have to wing it coming across these incredibly dangerous river bars. Port Macquarie bar is one of the dodgiest, along with Ballina, and with lots of boats lost on them, they’re not to be taken lightly. Generally you don’t approach them from straight outside as that’s precisely where the river current drops silt and sand to create the bar when the current slows after it leaves the constrained banks of the river. But every bar is different and you need accurate up to date information, which is available in pilot guides and the local marine rescue agency.

Hi guys, thanks for the heads up on navionics leading lights. I recommend that rather than winging it it is better if you put an hour into writing a passage plan fir each passage before heading out, including a pencil stretch of the harbour, the shallows, rocks, landmarks and the transits and lead lines; not to mention the tides; it’s best to cross bars at slack high water, and even then to be wearing life jackets. Good luck, and thanks for your honesty in showing your mistakes.

You must wash your spuds there are bugs in the dirt you don’t want to eat. Just leave them in the sink or a bucket of seawater and they will wash themselves. Crossing bars at the wrong time in good weather is fine with experience, you showed very well how quickly it can go wrong even in good weather. Care must be taken at all times. I’ve watched boats get lost coming into P. Maq many times so don’t feel too bad. Glad your mum is doing better.x

Cant imagine if we had bad weather coming in across the bar at the wrong time with an outgoing tide. These bars can be very dangerous indeed care must be taken

I also had a knee replacement in July . I don’t know what made her sick , but the pain is incredible . The pain only went away now in December . It’s a hell of a op ! I am pleased that she is now feeling better .

Some people take quite a while to get over the knee operation and some wish they never had it. She picked up something in hospital and related to the knee but she is on the mend thanks 👍

I entered that same bar a few days ago! I was too far south on my approach too ( by a little), made it in on the red light..... Luckily I had the tide going in and little to no wind

You were lucky-- I avoid those bars as much as I possibly can-- been through that one before but in far calmer conditions. I would have gone straight down to Port Stephens-- really easy to get in there and it's gorgeous!. This is also why Marine Rescue are so big on lifejackets on bars... Phil

As soon as I saw that you're in Port Maquarie, I stopped the video, went ashore and walked all the way down to the marina area. I spent an hour looking around from the Fisherman's Wharf (where Police Car is anchored) all the way to the marina, looking to see if I could find you boys. I am guessing that you've already moved on but it was worht a look. I would have liked to drop in and have a yarn with you boys.

All sailors have made mistakes, wasn't it Lord Nelson who stood in front of the cannons of a Portuguese Navy ship the moment they opened fire, in a battle against the French and Spanish in the Mediterranean? I was sad to hear that your mum is ill, I hope she recovers as soon as possible. Thank you for sharing.

Gravy making tip: once you've mixed the granules or powder with the liquid (make it a paste first with just half a cup of water, and you add the rest and heat…use a hand whisk (very cheap….a small hand whisk) and you'll never have lumpy gravy again. Also works when making custard.

I noticed you were working out with weights if you want to save weight while sailing. You can get waterproof bags and fill them with sand to use as weights. When you go sailing, you can dump them out

A couple of weekends ago, we had an ocean buoy race just outside of the Port Maquarie bar and had a great sail (1st place). On the way back in to the Hastings River, we got an ubrupt and unexpected strong Southerly gust as we came to the North wall. With starboard gunwale underwater, we came screaming in to the river with the mast hanging over the wall. It was a bit nerve wracking. 40ft, 9 ton yacht.

@TheSailingBrothers as you will remember from home delivery's "we have had to make a substitution." Where you are, you have to compromise. Yes, it will be fine. On your escapade of getting the wrong leading light. I was sailing into Alderney, and given the wrong transit, seeing the depth gauge go from 100m to 2m in a minute almost led to a change of underwear. Keep up the good work.
