Great review. Portable monitors are really a mixed bag and can be confusing to shop for. Most have a very low brightness level or are hamstrung by their size or performance. I bought a decent one on Amazon that has a stand that doubles as a USB hub which helps a lot.

This is where the new $pensive wireless type cover would be great. PS that's a shit stand not a kick stand. Vesa mounting it means the cables will be in possible pinch mode.

Move the kickstand all the way up when you mount it. Cables will be out of the way of the stand. No issues there.

@@scaryifliteral it looks like it would be sticking up above the top of the monitor like an antenna. Maybe the angle was bad, but if so, that looks pretty crummy

It isn't "enough power," it is probably the difference of using HDMI over USB, aka Thunderbolt, vs. a virtual display which is blitting the data over USB-C. It's more like having a Miracast display for the second monitor. There are other USB to HDMI adapters on the market the same way.

@scaryifliteral Ай бұрын
Sure, but Miracast works better on more powerful devices. That's sort of my point. The second monitor seems to require extra lifting and it'll lag worse on slower PCs.

@@scaryifliteral I think it is more compressing the image, bandwidth, and then uncompressing it on the other side. Ideally, the compression and decompression are supported with hardware so that you can utilize something like H.256 on the computer and on the display, neither of which side of the process are completely instant, but there is a cap on how quickly the driver processes the image. Even if the frame rate from Windows is elevated to something like 144 Hz, that is just telling Windows how quickly to change the frame buffer for a virtual display, and I'd be curious if you even have those settings for the display driver. How quickly that buffer is read and encoded is limited by how quickly the receiving buffer is clocked. I'm almost certain that the limit is on the display side and that is determined by the manufacturer and in part limited by the USB bandwidth. Even if you are using USB-C ports, I'm expect you aren't transferring at more than 480 Mb/s (USB 2), or probably 5 Gb/s (USB 3.0). As such, I don't think you're going to have any improvement by having a more powerful PC. Having a better video card is likely not going to help either because you're still going to have a memory transfer from the GPU to memory to serialize the steam across USB. It can be useful to have a second display for some scenarios, don't get me wrong, but I don't think you're going to be able to do anything to increase the frame rate or reduce the lag.

I'm really curious to figure out if it works with linux, seeing as it needs a separate driver.

@scaryifliteral so I'm happy to report that it at least sort of works with linux. I'm using a 1st gen framework laptop running pop-os. using the included usb-c -> usb-c cable I'm able to get the bottom monitor working without having to do anything beyond plugging it in. the upper monitor doesn't seem to get getting any input though so it's only half working. I assume the custom driver is for interfacing with the upper monitor then. I'll have to poke around more with what sort of hardware the linux system is detecting, I'm not really well versed with how to do that however so it'll probably be fruitless. It could also be that my laptop isn't powerful enough graphics-wise to operate 3 monitors at once. I'm gonna have to do some more experimenting.

This would be as expected. The top monitor isn't actually a monitor, but it is a device which renders the contents of a virtual display. The driver Windows installs is necessary for the second display because it isn't connected otherwise.

@@R.B. You sound way more informed on display technology than me. Do you know where I would start to look in order to develop a linux driver? Assume I'm a C/C++ dev with several years experience but not necessarily with linux kenrel internals, if that helps narrow the scope of the question.
