Idk if mines a newer model or not, but the hand hole actually goes in the two small ports for the rope at the bottom of the rangefinder.

It is just black display like the 700 and 1,000 I believe. I just ordered on, $60 on Amazon, can’t go wrong there.

your uncle didn't know about scan function? every rangefinder i have owned in the past 20+ years has had that function.

Yeah he didn’t, he hasn’t owned a range finder before…honestly it was a good learning lesson for me because in the heat of the moment I might have made the same mistake!
