The simple fact is by keeping supply down they allow the second hand market to retain extraordinary value and give their customers a sense of exclusivity. I'm not saying their business model doesn't work, I'm just saying if Rolex wanted everyone to be able to purchase a watch, they could easily do so.

@@arbiterofreason2068 They "Make" 800,000. Doesn't mean they "Sell" them. Nor does it mean they respond to supply and demand either by specific model. Luxury goods don't work that way. Richemont bought back and melted $1B of product each year for a couple of years rather than see market forces apply. Be certain that Rolex does the same, or just has the good sense not to send the watches out in the first place.

This is exactly why I got myself an Omega. I can save up for a Rolex but it's just stupid to buy a $9000 watch on a grey market for $11,000 or more, and yet, you'll still get something that was used for couple of months. Resale is great but it was made artificially I think. Last time I called 3 Omega ADs and asked for specific model and all of them have it. I just went to the nearest one and took home one with me. I cannot do that with Rolex.

Rolex is completely in house and only makes their watches in gold. You will not see that many Rolex Cellini watches out there for good reason.

Definitely the Omega for me, especially since their Master Chronometer upgrade. The Tresor is now also available in steel, unlike the Cellini, and the gold models have removed the date (the one thing the Cellini had over the Tresor). I definitely also prefer the aesthetics of the Omega, both on its dial (the hands a actually fit the dial), and on the back (display caseback for the win).

I own the De Ville Tresor and think it's a BEAUTIFUL watch. The honeycomb / linen dial adds a subtle accent that gives this watch a classy & sophisticated look. I love the date complication at the 6 position - it creates perfect vertical symmetry to the overall aesthetic. And being able to see the movement through a clear case back is what the Cellini is sorely missing. I'm convinced that in 30-40 years, vintage collectors will be tripping over themselves to get a 432.53.40.21.02.002. My only concern? The hands are thin and w/o lume. But given it 's a dress watch, c'est la vie.

It wasn't so long ago I was looking at a brand new black dial, stainless steel Sub in the Rolex boutique at only £1250, it was the (almost typed cheapest) lowest priced watch in the window and the best looking (far too much bling made the others look cheap, in my opinion). I almost bought it but that ugly Cyclops put me right off, I didn't see a no date version in the shop. The sub was a great tool watch but it's far too expensive to wear at work these days, in my line of work. It's not watchmaking skill that drove up the price of Rolex, it's purely fashion and marketing. Back then they bought in the movements, then a few years ago they bought the company that made them. Rolex now sits at a point where people buy the Explorer and then haunt Rolex forums complaining about light scratches on a watch that was used in the assent of Everest and the horrors of having to polish out desk scuffs from the rigours of the Monday to Friday slog in an office. It's all quite sad, although I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at the replies.

Being a relatively new collector, I was all about Rolex. As I became educated and exposed to watch collecting that changed. Why would anyone pay more for a pre-owned than a new one, especially when Rolex makes more watches than most manufacturers. This gimmick of not supplying popular models should turn consumers off. I bought one Rolex early on and now own 3 Omega’s which are clearly better watches and a much better value.

​@Will H well... that's a bit harsh. Rolex makes excellent watches. The Sky Dweller has some pretty unique "complication" in terms of the Ring Command Bezel. Yes, they don't make any tourbillons or minute repeaters, but I think that's because they want their watches to be more utilitarian than poetic. Pretty sure they could make them if they wanted to. Sure, I agree they're overhyped and overpriced, but that doesn't mean they're bad. Oh, and I also prefer Omega as a brand. I'm just not a hater or a fanboy :)

For a dress watch, I prefer the case and lug profile of the Cellini. I also love the coin edge bezel with a matching crown. The Omega is also gorgeous, but I think the Cellini just makes for a better dress watch with some interesting pop without being overbearing. It’s simple, understated, effective, and of course beautiful - the most important assets of a dress watch.

I'm 100% an Omega guy, but in this particular match up, I have to give it to the Cellini, it just looks more elegant and striking. Movement, ethos and quality I give to Omega, certainly, but the Cellini is honestly the first Rolex other than a Bond SubMariner I would actually consider owning. It's just beautiful. The dial on the Omega here by contrast seems too "busy" with the linen background, and the indices seem less elegant. And as a collector, the Rolex. As a utility, the Omega; a watch must at the VERY least have a date complication to be of any substantive use to me. A lux watch to me is like a sports car or hot rod, you don't build or buy them just to look at it and wipe it down with a diaper on the weekends, you have them to use and enjoy.

Well, for me, there is no doubt that Omega is not only a superior watch, but overall better deal as well. During the years, I had numerous Omegas, from Bond Seamaster (both auto and quartz), to Speedy Pro and his Reduced brethren (I had two from MIchael Schumacher edition), all the way to my current piece, the Aqua Terra, and one thing I can tell - they simply cannot disappoint! Built quality has always been on pair with Rolex, and prices were always fair. But among these two, and I say this completely aware of the Omega's superiority in this case, I vote for Cellini. This pretty unpopular and understated line of Rolex watches is by far my favorite of all current overpriced and overhyped lines. Something in Cellini's case design, maybe its thinner lugs and (yes) plain, thus cleaner, dial simply speaks to me, and I'm powerless against it... Yes, if I'm about to purchase something in this range, maybe I would go Omega route (again), but simply as a spectator - this duel Rolex wins for me.

I think Rolex is simply trying to continue to maintain a superior brand image by maintaining a superior price list. Whichever way you look at it, I find no justification for a higher price on the Rolex, especially considering the level of detail in the dial and movement finishes on the Omega. After owning several omega's and rolexes... by far the build quality and innovation on the omega's beats rolex any day and is out of this world for the price point. Plus, they are accessibility and want to sell to their customers! I ended up selling off my other watches and exclusively collecting omegas!

Solid case back gives more gold! The hands and hour markers are so much detailed on the Cellini compared to the flat machining on the Tresor, feels like the Celiini put its effort on where it truly matters. Anyway, I'm not getting ALS levels of finishing with the Tresor so I'd take a Cellini which also comes with a screw-down crown for extra protection. I'd rather have a clean dial than to find this (6:40) on my dial.

Watch design is obviously a subjective thing, but I must say I greatly prefer the design of the Cellini over the DeVille. A cheap looking date window has no place on a dress watch this expensive, and the entire design seems weak and uninspired to me. The dial is nice, but the hands and markers don’t stack up, in my opinion. The Rolex seems like a far more cohesive and complete package to my eyes.

Back in the 1970's I decided to buy an Omega Mega Quartz Constellation. Quartz was all the rage and this thing was so very accurate....about 5 seconds in the year ! I could have bought a Rolex Mechanical Automatic which might have been 20 seconds a week accurate. It was the price that swung it as the Omega was about £300 whereas the Rolex was in the order of £500. In the words of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, "Big mistake" The Omega movement eventually started acting up, the bracelet stretched and would burst open on its own....I gave it to my brother and its probably been binned as it looks like a Television screen and so very very of its time. The Rolex would have been worth a "Sh+tload of money now. Big mistake indeed.

This is a battle for the ages! #1 and #2 largest watch producers by volume have been at it for decades, but somehow only watch geeks know about it. Europeans seem to love Omega, while North Americans tend to favor Rolex (yes it’s a wild generalization). I tried that Omega on my wrist. Great looking watch but it should be 2 or 3 mm smaller in diameter and without date to be truly perfect. The Cellini is almost perfect. The number on the middle of the indices ruin an otherwise gorgeous dial.

Uh, I feel uncomfortable having to say this, but Rolex didn’t originate ANY of the ideas listed in the first 3 minutes of the video. Not the Oyster case, not the self winder, not the GMT, not the rotatable bezel, etc. It purchased or borrowed the designs for every single one of those “inventions”. Granted, they deployed them with quality. But to claim those ideas as their own would not be accurate to any degree for Rolex.

In fairness to Rolex, they have never claimed to have invented much with watches, it's not what they are about as a company. But they have always had a knack of bringing existing elements together (Yes, invented by others), & making them into a greater whole. As I believe a previous video said on here, Rolex have got where they are today by not necessarily working harder, but working smarter. For example, using interchangeable components in different watches to simplify & reduce manufacturing costs. The movement in the current Submariner can be traced back to the 1980's, although it has had several incremental improvements since then. But why spend a fortune on reinventing the wheel if you don't have to? Thats more Omega. This is the Rolex way. It seems to have served them pretty well over the years...

Cellini's dial is too busy and Tresor is a nicer looking dress watch for my taste. The beautiful movement behind the transparent case-back and the lower price make the Omega an easy choice between the two. The only thing I like better on the Rolex is the hands.

Heya Watchfinder team - you've done a $300 seiko vs grand seiko comparison before, but what about a clash between the two "Seiko Snowflakes", the $6000 Grand Seiko Snowflake SBGA211 and the Seiko Presage "Icelake" SJE073 with its similar aesthetic and new 4L35 caliber at $2200. It was a limited release either last year or in 2018 and boy what a looker. I would love a comparison video to see which one is worth my money.

Omega = stamped out flat second hand. Rolex = rounded second hand. Rolex isn't a "luxury watch", but the exterior finishing detail is superior on the Cellini. Omega has it on the movement, not even close there.

Omega for me every time, in this match-up. The Rolex seems fitting for those who insist all their watches are 'investments', or those who've never heard of an Omega DeVille. I think those choosing the Rolex for looks would be rare cases, and can't imagine anyone would choose it for the movement.

The Cellini dial looks off; it’s like the dial was supposed to be smaller and they tacked on those outside markers, almost as an afterthought. The hands, etc., on the Rolex are thus too short. The Omega is a much more balanced and elegant watch.

Great video, I always look forward to your content, and this video didn’t disappoint. Rolex seems more Germanic in design, yet that crown and warmth of the case colouring is awesome. However there’s always a BUT; the dial on the Omega is outstanding, and love the curved ended second hand leading all the way to the edge of the dial. It's a daft comparison. The Rolex used should have been the Cellin Date for this review. Completely different dial to the normal three hander Cellini.

The brutal truth is everybody KNOWS Omega produces better watches. However, in watch collection, quality is only a small part of the considerations. The reputation of creating values for watch owners over a century is far more important to an average watch collector.

I think the Rolex Cellini is more beautiful than the Omega but the Omega offers more value with a beautiful dial with date, a transparent case back, and $1700 lower than the Rolex.

This review should have been using a Cellini Date. The dial on the Cellini Date is simply stunning and knocks the Omega dial out the park. I also think the hands on the Omega are just way too thin.
