@@NeevesKnives I have a diamond disc I mount on my lathe chuck. I use it to sharpen carbide windmills and drill bits. It works great but it’s not precise and chips the carbide much like using a scraper to remove molecules of steel from an edge. The kind of tool you’ve reviewed is actually great when mounted correctly on a ski edge sharpening deal. I used to make them out of mill files. These little edge sharpening tools ended up being kind of a norm for doing a quick tune up on skis or a snowboard. Even hockey Skates can get tuned up Supernice with just a few passes. I never made them or sold them just made them to give to friends who ski. My little tool wasn’t meant to do a real tune up but just fix a rocked out edge on the slope. This tool is much the same but the invention is being used to support the guy’s living. The guy is an entrepreneur who has managed to get his invention produced and he is the ultimate salesman. I give him props for that. The thing is most of the things I’ve invented were just improvements on things. I’m still dealing with a machine I designed and built where a college class designed something similar and was trying to market it. They never even manufactured the machine but after seeing mine claimed I had copied theirs. This guy managed to make a product, bring it to market by his hard work then it gets copied and sold for half the price. The whole reason these kids in this engineering class brought the lawsuit was because I was applying for a patient. I really dig watching your vlogs because of the amazing machine work done on so many of these different knives. The technology used to produce them is mind blowing. The guys building and designing them are the future in manufacturing no matter where they’re from. It really doesn’t make a difference if the little carbide scraper works for folks like us. It’s his thing that he is doing to make a living. Personally I wish more folks were like him.

Ok, I've got carbide sharpeners like this and they do work but they're super hard to use. This tool is a single tooth file essentially, so to use it successfully you need to treat it like a file. For reprofiling it takes a strong hand and VERY VERY careful and precise application, you're basically trying to recreate what a CNC machine does using the same carbide cutting tool with your hands which just isn't easy. You can totally reprofile the blade like this, but you as a human are no CNC machine and are gonna have worse results and take longer. After shaping the bevel you need to de-burr and microbevel. First done by cutting the microbevel (NOT JUST UP AND DOWN THE EDGE BUT ALSO INTO THE EDGE SO EVERY INCH UP THE BLADE YOU ALSO MOVE AN INCH INTO THE BLADE) moving the carbide cutting corner at a 45 into the edge at the lift/angle of the edge (so like your 17degrees or so). Then finally deburr with that same 45 degree in-to-the-edge method you turn the carbide cutting corner to where the corner is trailing and basically both burnish and remove the burr with ADHESIVE WEAR (IT DOESN'T JUST STRAIGHTEN EDGES ADHESIVE WEAR REMOVES MATERIAL) like a ceramic rod or butcher's steel. So you CUT the bevel into the steel then using adhesive wear refine the very apex. But again this is a single toothed file, the vast majority of folks can't even sharpen an axe with a regular file much less something like this which is 2 or three times more difficult to manage. You can get no joke hair whittleing edges with files and these are no exception... but you need the conceptual understanding as well as the raw skill to do it. Not recommended.

His product is something that's been around fot ages, it's basically one side of a pull through sharpener or similar to a steel honing rod. To align an already sharp edge that maybe rolled over it would do that job although like you said there are much better options to choose from such as a strop, ceramic, or fine diamond hone that will actually work better and make the edge last longer by keeping those micro serrations in place. Pull through is the last thing I would want on any of my knives and I've been trying to get people to steer clear of them along with steel honing rods altogether by recommending a product that actually works. The worksharp guided field sharpener is great in the home as well as the field and wont break the bank, on top of it also being able too handle even kitchen knives or folding knives for maintenance. Still recommend a good set of stones for full sharpening of knives at home either guided system or free hand as it doesn't have an aggressive enough stone for reprofiling in my opinion, but you keep a knife going with it for a long time if no serious damage occurs. The carbide on the pull through sharpeners and this easy best sharpener do make for great ferro rod scrapers though for starting fires lol. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

Yours scratch pattern depends on how you angle your knife. The way you do it is great for cutting from heel to tip. But if you want the other way (a chef's knife maybe) you angle it the opposite way. Or do it straight and you'll have a perpendicular pattern that doesn't exceed at either, but does better than the heel to tip trying to cut tip to heel (hopefully you understand). I use all 3 strokes in burr minimization and finish with the pattern I want.

So not defending his products in any way, but I too am a knife sharpener who prefers whetstones... My Shapton Glass stones are my pride and joy alongside my newer Naniwa Diamond Resin stones.. LOVE them... BUT, I have these sharpens best sharpeners as well, as I wanted to try them out. If you use them properly, they absolutely WILL bring an edge back from completely dead (I have done this several times to friends at work with knives so dull they couldn't cut anything, but that requires a TON of pressure, and honestly that is probably cutting the metal so badly that it's wear the metal down way faster than normal PROPER stone sharpening over time)... You must use the corners, at an angle that matches the current blade bevel as best you can (which has given me the best results for me anyway), and twist the sharpener at about / around a 45 degree angle so that the "corners" aren't straight up and down, and are more of a sloped push as he demonstrates in his videos, and do NOT use massive amounts of pressure (unless the edge is just super jacked and you want to get faster results).... The biggest catch? The edge, being that you're stretching it out very quickly with carbide, can be a lot thinner than a proper stone edge, and therefore rolls over easier if not careful. Brad even mentions how he also uses stones and a worksharp sharpener.. I believe these types of sharpeners are best for "in the field" quick edge repair when doing outdoor / on the job work where you can't bust out several large stones. So, in closing, do I use these exclusively for my good knives? Nope, not at all. Do I use these on cheaper knives when out in the field and don't have access to anything when something goes dull? Yes... I don't fall for the gimmick that these are the only sharpeners to use as some would try and say, but I do use these for less expensive knives when a quick edge is needed in a place I can't properly sharpen.

@@MrBowser2012 the method begins with my wife uttering a magic phrase that goes something along the lines of “holy shit you waste so much god damned time sharpening your knives, do they always have to be dangerously sharp spend time with your family yada yada” At that point the max horizontal travel of the stone without it passing over the tip of the blade is determined. Then I use my free hand as a horizontal “stop” for the stone while rapidly moving the stone left to right to left like a maniac. Wait until entire bevel has been touched and a burr has formed, flip knife, repeat process, go to next stone, flip again, repeat. Edges seem to have fine durability as far as my use goes. My knives are almost entirely used in a work environment where abrasive edge resistance has a usefulness of next to none. D2 is the perfect work knife steel imo. Hard enough to resist wear well. Tougher than a bucket of nails and can withstand immense impacts into hard surfaces without causing any catastrophic edge damage or severe rolling, and it’s stainless enough to be MORE than adequate for work knife use where you couldnt give a tenth of a shit about how pretty she is. Had exactly the same experience, the thing only works as a hone-strop, it doesnt work once you removed all the vertical scratches as it makes the knife slip on the material with the parallel scratch pattern. What I wonder is that the edge retention seems to work the best on knifes with scratch pattern that have been probably sharpened on belts, the owner has a video of him shaving bark of a tree with a buck 120 and it still slices paper after that. Would like to know your opinion on sharpening systems that produce edges with higher and deeper number of teeth such as the worksharp belt sharpener. It is titanium carbide, which is harder than most steels, so yes it will sharpen when used correctly. Use only light pressure and consistent angle. Using a carbide bit for planers does works similar. I never use V pull through. However I find a simple ceramic honing rod is better and less likely to screw up the blade.

thanks for your videos. I have watched a few now. I had no idea that a person could know so much about knives. I have tried those pull throughs - I assumed this was good for sharpening knives because it came with the knives. I thought it was me because they always end up duller. I found your channel because I thought it was time to actually learn. .... But then there are these little gadgets. This guy is putting himself out there as knowledgeable. And with that knowledge he made this little gadget. I would think it was good. buy it. try it. only to end up with a dull knife again - and think it was me. ..... Thank you for your videos. with some practice I may actually have a sharpened knife. !!!!!

I enjoyed watching your take on this subject. It is a bit of a hobby for me as well. Have you seen the Outdoors55 videos regarding "straightening an edge"? He has one about knife steels he goes into depth on the subject. Also I can appreciate a toothy edge, and I will usually not sharpen a new knife if it has a good toothy edge (leatherman is good at those) until it gets nice and dull. I feel like its easier to get the burr to release on more of a polished edge, so when I end up with a razor sharp edge I think the toothiness kind of stops JUST shy of the actual apex, which doesn't really have any teeth left. Which you can see on a hair whittling edge under a microscope. I think this tool does just what you said about deepening the edge issues and isn't a good tool. I left a comment on one of his videos telling him to do a microscope video, before and after he used his tool, but he pretty much declined. A bench stone is to a proper knife edge, what a jack plane is to a nice flat peice of wood. Its like the difference of trying to sand a chair seat smooth with a dremel/sanding drum vs a sanding block. They both would smooth the surface to an extent, but one has a flattening/ refining effect, where the other just follows the issues without correcting them. I have been wanting to do my own sharpening video, but it's just hard to find the time with work and kids. Anyhow, I enjoy your videos, keep em' coming sir.

I found a similar product (quite old 90's) in my parents kitchen drawer, comes from a Scandinavian country, which one? One of the S's from memory, had finger grooves for the angles, about 23ish and a ceramic whetstone on the flip side, actually gave some average kitchen knives a profile and edge that got through relative grade paper. And made a difference to a quite poor edge. But no more. Go the stone. See me at the next knife show with a pair of snowshoes yodelling. Enjoy the channel.

I have had great success with these type of sharpeners. Takes practice! Hard stainless steels to soft high carbon can be sharpened but are very different in the feel using this type of carbon steel sharpener. I use it mostly as a field sharpener to get an edge back on a blade. As far as kitchen knives it works quick and can be used several times once you get the hang of it before going back to a stone. This does not replace the initial work you have to put into blade with stones but can get a quick edge back on fast when you need it. The angle and the pressure you use is key!! A simple leather strap after this tool works awesome. Again it takes practice but works when you learn how to use it. Having said that too much pressure WILL damage blade requiring more work to fix it. Remember this is high carbon steel that is used in lathes and milling machines so it has potential to remove a LOT of steel. I would bet that most people use too much pressure and ruin the Apex. My two cents worth from my experiences. I really like using them.

it depends on the budget, and whether you want to freehand or fixed angle which will cost more, im testing a sharpener right now that i will be posting soon, but a couple diamond plates and an angle guide to place on the plates and a strop will work but it will take more effort than a fixed angled system, i have tons of videos teaching freehand, and fixed angled systems

He does make a lot of bad statements. Like, I don't like to sharpen my knife too sharp, because it'll make it weaker. A paper cutting edge is about 1-2 micron, shaving is 0.5-1. At that thinness, it doesn't matter if it's 2 micron or 0.5 micron. It's more about burr removal, than how sharp your edge is. I have argued with him about that point many times until I gave up. (I see you showed that part, he says it a lot too.)

So, are you saying that stropping on an old leather belt, with no compound at all, is useless? I have never used a compound. I can get my knives hair shaving sharp, so I never felt the need to buy any. But I guess I need to try it some day to understand it’s value. Edit: Actually, I’m lying. I have used something once. My mom is a jeweler, so she has polishing compounds, the green, white, and brown blocks that she puts on a buffer wheel to polish gold and silver. I used some of the green once on my strop, but I couldn’t tell if it did anything... Perhaps I’ll see a difference with a diamond emulsion...

How many edge retention tests have you done after sharpening them, how many have you looked at under a microscope, how many steels have you tested. I personally have been doing this for years, I've tested most steels on the market in every geometry I've also tested almost every stone on the market. And it's overwhelmingly clear that carbide pull through sharpeners are horrible for your edge. Unless you do not care about performance what so ever. Yes, it has a leather sheath with one side being rougher for stropping, works like a charm for me even without compound. But I have used that technique you have mentioned with a small ceramic rod too a couple of times, and I also thought it was just straightening up the rolled bits of the edge; since it is used in the same direction as stropping. And I only ever use the rougher side of the CC4 to grind out noticeable chips by the way; to sort of reprofile.

I appreciate your attention to detail in this review. I have no dog in this fight and not pushing anyone's product. I watched several of the sharpens best videos and even watched several KZbinrs review this product with mostly positive results. Like you, the folks who do these reviews are very experienced and understand the process taking place. I wanted to buy one of his sharpeners but think they are a little on the expensive side. I found a similar product almost half the price at $13.00--made in America. It just does not have a blade profiler on it. I practiced on some yard tools that were in bad shape and the sharpener actually worked well. I moved on the doing my kitchen knives that were in so-so shape. I watched several vids and following the instructions, it did make my kitchen knives close to razor sharp. Again, it took me some practice to figure out how light, how hard and the angle to the carbide to use the sharpener. Once you get a feel of it, I think it works well. I do not have any expensive knives with extremely hard steel so I can't speak to that. I do want to reiterate, there is a technique and a "touch" required to used this type of sharpener and the one I have works very good. And for the record, I have a drawer with several sharpeners that I consider junk and defiantly do not work.
