Allison Pregler did an interview with the guy who played Keither and he had some great behind-the-scenes stories. Believe it or not, that blond hair was all his! Also, he was apparently in the running to be Hercules in the show but was passed over for Kevin Sorbo. Shame, that.

To me, this movie feels like it was filmed at different times. It really feels like they had this unfinished kids Sinbad movie filmed, and then tried to finish it up by adding in scenes with other actors and whatever actors they could convince to come back for some shots. It feels like the Sinbad stuff was filmed first, and the stuff with the kid with the grandfather reading the story was filmed later. This movie to me really feels like a splice job where they managed to get some of the actors back to film the scenes with the kid. The film seems such a mess that it really feels like a couple unfinished movies spliced together.

I knew this seemed familiar. Allison Pregler (AKA Obscurus Lupa) reviewed this one years ago. She even got a lengthy interviews with Robert Chapin, Elvis Restaino, and Diane Mehrez (wife of the director). The behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this movie were outrageous to say the least. I highly recommend listening to the interviews if you have the time.

Those desert springs are what hydrated the ancient Nabataeans (and before them the Edomites). They lived in the cliffs where rain water would accumulate in very specific places, the knowledge of which allowed them to live freely in an area that nobody wanted. To grow just one tree they had to direct a bunch of streams into one place to make that happen. The kingdom collapsed after a couple of earthquakes

Some people think that the magi in the gospel according to Matthew were Nabateans: they did produce or trade in gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The guess is that the journey was brief and they rode Arabian horses. Possible, I guess.
@kenknight5983

@@markiangooley Almost. The Nabataeans lived off the spice trade because they were in the middle of a bunch of trade routes (middlemen perhaps?). The Magi were a Medo-Persian tribe of many priests who probably traded with them. I guess it's possible they made a stop off at Petra on the way. You can read about the Magi in detail in Herodotus and Strabo

oh i have been itching for you guys to do this beautiful classic since i stumbled across GBorBB circa Battlefield Earth. This actually came out in cinemas where i grew up, not a whole lot of people in the theatre, and i was last one standing by the time it finished. This movie is basically 3 different projects smashed together. Like the movie you guys covered with Chekov from original Star Trek, this started life as a point and click PC Game, all the stuff to the camera is to you the player, but they ran out of money and tried to salvage it with this movie. RIchard took off halfway through the movie, i think thats why Slater was insterted into his place at times. The director as well just disappeared hence why Elvis who played Murkhi Khan stepped up to direct the Bulgarian scenes. Dean Stockwell was flown all the way out to Jordan just to film his stuff inside a High School gymnasium. Seriously, go watch Allison Pregler's interviews with the cast, the making of this movie was more incredible then the actual movie.

History graduate here because you summoned me. To put it short: The movie is a historical clusterfuck. Acording to the original Sinbad stories he's from Baghdad in the late 8th/very early 9th century. The mongols, where Khan probably comes from, weren't really united until the 11th century. China had an emperor in that time so Hong could "technically" be his son. Sinbad also tells the princess his mother was "queen of the Desert gypsies". "Gypsy" is a slur for the Romani people but they're generally not known to live in deserts (though they do live in countries with them). This makes me think they probably meant other desert nomads like Bedouins. They actually live in Iraq so it could make sense with the origin of Sinbad. Also yes I know I thought way harder than the filmmakers about this.

Here's my guess. They started filming the Sinbad movie in Bulgaria but then ran out of money. Then, later on, they found a cheap studio and filmed all the stuff with the kid and spent what little extra they could raise to film that. Then they cut and pasted the footage from both together as best that they could. But due to liminations of budget, and lack of scenes that they needed to film the story in Bulgaria, there still was no coherent narrative. I see what they were trying to do here. "We don't have a bunch of scenes needed to tell the Sinbad story, so we'll have this grandfather reading a magic storybook to this kid, and he'll just read the missing scenes to us. The old man reading the book will be the exposition and fill in the missing stuff. We'll work some things that look magical into those scenes to make the book look magic and stuff and everything will work out. Sadly.... there's no way they could have actually made it work probably with the number of missing scenes they had.

It was a VERY troubled production to the point that its original filming never completed and they had to complete it in a new shooting locale with a much lower budget, a different director and its lead actor not returning for filming. That kind of bad. Alison Pregler did a great review of it a number of years ago, followed with a few interviews with two actors from the film and one of the movie's main producers.
