Easy. Shanghai Transrapid (maglev). It goes from Pudong Airport to basically the middle of nowhere (OK, Longyang Road is now a lot less the middle of nowhere than it was when the maglev opened in 2003, as it is now a 4-line interchange station). You still have to transfer to the Metro or a taxi to get to the city centre, so it's not much faster overall than just taking the metro directly. It doesn't even travel at the top speed of 430km/h for most of the day. The only way to save it would be to extend it further either to Lujiazui or People's Square, or at very least to Shanghai South Railway Station / Hongqiao Railway Station / Airport. But any plans to extend it have been basically put to bed by public opposition, the Central Government's commitment to conventional HSR over maglev technology, and the currently under construction Airport Link Line that will cut travel time between Pudong and Hongqiao to 40 minutes down from the current 90 minutes+ via Metro Line 2 when it opens in 2024.

If there's any stations on the TYSSE that should have been left as a concrete box waiting for future development - it's this one. An interchange with a infrequent GO Transit line.. is not that important right now - but could be useful in the future!

Counter point - Highway 407. It amazes me that we put off building North York Centre station for a decade, but it was apparently incredibly necessary to build a station in the middle of a marsh. I can literally hear crickets when I walk through the parking lot.

I agree except for the part about the interchange not being important. That's perhaps the most important part. There was no need to make it so big. This will be more useful when the Barrie GO line expansion is finished with the Caledonia, Bloor-Landsdowne and Spadina GO stations completed as well. Fare integration between the GO and TTC is recommended also as this not only drives up the obvious North to South traffic (and vice versa) but also the transfer from the Barrie line to Line 1 towards York University, Vaughan and especially the 407 station for long distance travelers and that doesn't get talked about often.

Wasn't this station built this large because it anticipated the future re-development of Downsveiw airport and its surrounding area? Right now there's only open fields, but the station will become the anchor of the mixed-use development that has been planned and its massive size and amenities will become justified. Is it a perfect station? Hardly, many things can be improved (eg the shelterless GO platforms or the lack of a indoor bike parkade, which you have mentioned). But is building big so that infrastructure will be capable of handling (a certain to appear) future demand a "white elephant"? Hardly so, and I thought that was one of the things you advocated for on this channel.

That large concourse would be a great place to locate a coffeeshop and grocery store or something. Wonder if TTC could take Shoppers Drug Mart, Starbucks, or someother store into locating in the concourse. And a small cafe next to the GO ticket booth (does GO even need its own ticket booth, most people use PRESTO/buy tickets from machines. If people have questions they can ask roving customer service agents. Personally I think ticket booths are like jails for transit staff.

The station has great potential and I used it often to get to and from college in Barrie on weekends. The station itself is close and well connected by the subway. I love the prevalence of natural sunlight. However, sometimes I’d end up taking Ontario Northland instead because using GO to get to and or from Barrie takes eons. By far the biggest problem is the ridiculous schedule that requires everyone alight at Aurora and get stuffed into a coach bus. Hence I’d rather spend the same amount for a longer distance bus service that would actually cut my time in half.

difference is - the way I understand it - that Sheppard Line 4 was built for political reasons and Downsview Park was built for urban planning reasons; including the planned-for expansion and development of the entire Downsview Park area. Eg on a fine Sunday afternoon at the end of February, 10 degrees C, only a light wind. (These are the current weather conditions here in Nottingham! Some additional background: The Barrie line is being double-tracked as we speak, so increased regional train service is coming within the next few years. The station is underutilized at the moment, but will become increasingly important as regional service increases. It would have been crazy to build this subway line and not provide a connection to GO. The GO line is actually designed for 3 tracks, not 2. There is space for a centre track, which will allow peak-direction express trains to overtake local trains, and allow freight trains to still pass through the station even after the platforms are raised for level boarding with GO trains.

Wild ideas for Downsview Park station: Move bus connections that are now at Sheppard West Extend Line 4 west and have it interline with Line 1 at Downsview Park and Finch West (and maybe as far as York University or Pioneer Village) to create a Line 6-Line 4 crosstown effect. More dense development in the Sheppard/Chesswood area. There’s a hotel and event site there and I selfishly want better lunch options when I’m working events there.

Downsview Park is my local GO train station and for me the biggest improvement would be fare integration with local TTC buses. The GO train would be the best way for me to get downtown, except that it would cost $3.20 for the bus to the station, then another $5.18 for the train ($8.38 total). The train is faster and more comfortable than the subway, but not enough to justify nearly triple the price. So instead I take the bus to Sheppard West and take the subway for $3.20 total. If the province funded free TTC rides for passengers connecting to GO, just like they do for every other agency in the GTA, then my trip would only cost $5.18 by GO and I would go to Downsview Park instead of Sheppard West.

My local station on the Shanghai Metro handles WAY more passengers than this on a daily basis already despite being on a brand new line that only opened a year ago, with way more to come given the massive residential and office development ongoing in the area, and it's considerably smaller on the surface, with only four small station houses at surface level. Underground it actually looks quite similar, though I'm amused by the fact that you mention that line of ticket gates being among the largest on the TTC, when that's a pretty standard number of gates at even a small station in Shanghai.

They opened it in 2006 and opened Woodleigh in 2011. Now, with the TEL, Mount Pleasant and Marina South wil not open until developments are complete. When Mount Pleasant was announced, people called it a white elephant, as it did not serve anything, and would be like Bukit Brown, a non-opened shell station on the CCL. That was, until HDB announced new BTO flats in Mount Pleasant in November 2021. Where are all the people?! It does seem somewhat ridiculously over engineered for what it is. Even if the GO line becomes a 2 track station and the area gets built up, the headhouse buildings seem really quite large. A similar station in London would be about half to quarter the size, with 2-4 times the amount of traffic. Still, look on the bright side, at least they didn't build a giant car park for 1000 cars. That's progress, right?

So exactly what is that station suppose to serve? It appears to be out in the middle of nowhere, even for a city.

Hopefully it’s just built ahead of need, rather than a true white elephant… but time will tell.

Wasting our tax money on vanity projects like this should be illegal. We got this and Bloomington GO instead of being able to have all 5 stops on the Yonge north extension

It’s amazing how it looks both really good and really underwhelming at the same time. Like seriously no thought was put into the GO part of the station. Lame and somehow not unexpected

What’s wrong with two escalators and an elevator down to a platform? I just think that makes more sense.

Oh dear, that station looks completely overbuilt. The station building has no need to be this huge on the surface, a smaller structure would’ve sufficed. The resemblance to the hills in the park is also questionable. I would’ve designed the buildings to have glass frontages and sloping roofs that would reach almost all the way to the ground, covered in grass. That way it could actually be seen by the riders on ground level. The GO platform also looks really deserted, like some rural halt and not like a station in a city of millions. I really hope they add proper canopies and raise the platforms to the accessible height.

You can tell that the subway in Toronto was build in a different time than the London Underground or New York Subway. The older subways have bright, tile walls and were designed for a wealthy clientele. Toronto must have been designed during the brutalist era where you have the bare necessities of a concrete box and a box train to travel through it. Can't wait until these already unattractive stations show their age from neglect of maintenance, a dystopian movie will only have to request time at night to film, no props will be needed.

Frustrating how Ottawa had to massively value-engineer the O-Train, resulting in tight platforms and single escalators at extremely busy downtown stations, while this was getting built in a crappy Toronto industrial park.

This is just another of the examples of why ttc is so incompetent when it comes to infrastructure development. They waste money on these grand mausoleums such as this and hwy 407. They should've only been 1/2 the size and the money saved could have first been used to keep the next train displays PERMANENTLY AD FREE amongst many other avenues like the Ontario line. Until they integrate stations with other major developments like malls or actual transit hubs, these stations will never see the capacity it was built for
