Hi! I made this to show a cool (revolutionary?!) piece of gear. I TOTALLY understand that at €2850,- it's far out of the price range for many guitarists. I played a Roland Cube & a Squier for 10 years and it never stopped me. I played gigs with an old 20 watt solid state modeling amp... I'm not trying to tell you you need expensive stuff to rock 🤘
@chefsalty5 жыл бұрын
but it does make it a bit easier to speak your tone with tools like this. i myself have been playing with my blues jr for 15 years and at the time it was a deal used 200$. with this function on this hook amp, i can effectively take out the monitor part and have it direct to the board and literally no pedals but the midi controller. = win in my opinion.

I noticed him because he kept spilling his drink everywhere and waving a pistol around. I approached and introduced myself, and let him know what a huge fan I am of his guitar videos. Paul said, "shut up guitar bitch" and threw his drink in my face. But when I walked away, he stopped me and called me back. "Keep telling the girls about The Guitar Legend Paul Davids while I go grab some cash real quick." I talked to Paul's friends and they were super nice too. for everyone that is saying this an expensive amp let's break it down: 10-14 pedals at avg 90$= $1260 2 amps at avg cost/used = $500 plugs and wires and cases and boards = $300 = 2k -ish (these are just for maybe your gigs and shows -1 set up at your house and road) doesn't even include what you have at your studio with the mixer board, mics, etc. we can go on and on. This is geared for the tube model enthusiast/minimalist and I'm all for it. playing a blues junior myself and 2 pedals this would effectively make my life easier. can you just imagine this small footprint of an amp with 1 plug to go to your midi controller and maybe a wireless. Very cool. I would be a little worried about servo-controlled pre-sets that actually turn the knobs. I guess that is the only way to get "the real thing" from a tube amp, but all those moving parts are just a bunch more things that can go wrong. If all you are really doing is turning pots, I wonder if he could have used a programmable resitive array (I'm not 100% sure that this exists, but it certainly seems technically feasible) that could select a resistance value automatically with no moving parts. And maybe some master switch that controls whether the pots are engaged vs the programmable resistors. It would not look as cool, but it seems less prone to failure. The midi control is a great idea.

The rotating knobs would be amazing on all my pedals, especially in performance when I may need more than one setting from one pedal. As always, it is not the amp that sings, it is Paul‘s fingers and great skill. Certainly a great amp, as a Rolex is a great watch for those who want it, there is no need though. I just started working with my 390€ used HX stomp yesterday and at the end of the evening I removed some 10 pedals from my board, started a nice preset, plugged it into my „real thing“ tube combo return path and couldn’t be any happier. Last week I was at a jam, and plugged into a Rivera 30. I couldn’t have been happier. At work, I have an old Peavey Studio Pro, every then and now I plug in and experience a shock of great sound and couldn’t be happier. What I want to say is that it isn’t the gear. It is the sensation. And a great player like Paul can play through a transistor radio and make it sound great. And I cannot, regardless of the money I spend. So I better keep buying inexpensive. And I know I will earn a shitstorm for writing this.

I applaud anyone who follows their dream and does something amazing, like developing this amp. Unfortunately, the problem is the reality that those amateur guitarists who can afford something like this amp (heart surgeons, patent attorneys, your average Google employee), are so busy working their “day” job, that they don’t really play guitar well enough to be able to hear the difference between this, and a Helix. I know a few, professional musicians, and talk to them about their economic realities. They play, all the time. So, like the difference between professional athletes and “weekend warriors”, they have mastery over their instruments, to a level most of us will never achieve. However, they’re really happy if they make $400 a gig (one night in a small club, for example). Most use a few pedals (or built-in effects, in the case of the keyboard players), and run directly into the house PA system. I can’t imagine any of them dropping over $3,000 for an inherently fragile tube amp (tube amps don’t like getting dropped!), when most of their audience couldn’t hear the difference between this amazing device, and a PocketPOD (or a couple of cheap, Roland pedals)! Those guitar playing heart surgeons are gonna love this though! It also looks like they’re lovingly hand crafted, in the Netherlands. If you think about it that way, it’s like a beautiful, hand-built guitar, and well worth the price, if you have the $$$.

"20 minutes later" ha ha, I bet. It sounds brilliant, and I've never seen that preset-knob-changing thing on a guitar amp. Really cool.

Rob Uttley really? Soldano did the knobs in the 80’s and Yamaha in the 90’s. This sounds better though...

Fantastic innovative amp. I've seen Tom Lodewyckx checking it out last year and is raving about it. As a pro guitar technician an luthier I can only confirm what you (and others) are saying. Guitarists, you have to get this amp (save up some money, you won't regret it). Made by a passionate guitarist and amp wizard. Another + made in Europe, whoop whoop! Groeten uit Belgie.

2,900 for this is acrually kind of a steal. Seeing as those old and unreliable amps by themselves cost more than that combined. The ac15c1x is almost half that at $1,299 now. All in one and mechanical and attenuators and fx loop and direct out. Non of those Amos have that

Modelling amps are for people who want to sound like someone else. Much cheaper to sound like yourself.

Exactly how I like it. You can see on the amp that on my clean sound the gain knob is at around 6/7. That's where it starts to break up. Dial it back if you want clean cleans :)

Very interesting amp, great demo, and as always, great playing. Love the tones and the way it operates. In regards to venues, yes, they generally don't want to deal with the sort of loud amps that were coming up till the 90s. I live in the States, a very litigious country, so there may be legal reasons for this. But I also think it's because times just sort of change. A lot of gigging musicians prefer equipment that's easier to move gig to gig and set up and break down fast. I've been playing guitar almost forty years in the L.A. area, but took a number of years off from the music scene, which I am just now getting back into. I noticed when I was Ubering a lot of musicians to gigs, especially guitar players, that their rigs were shrinking. In those several years of driving I never encountered one stack, just combos or floor systems like Helix, AxFx, Boss systems and small power amps, and maybe a small speaker, or they were likely going direct without a full amp. My rig now is just a Boss GT one and a Roland Cube which I will mic. It's loud enough for my needs. I play instrumental prog.

Wow, that seems like a great amp. I understand the want for the new technology. I own a Boss Katana 50 MkII and really love that there are so many sounds you can get from one amp. Now, I’m sure it doesn’t compare to a real tube amp but it’s fine for my needs. Both amps are very versatile and being computer compatible is almost a must now days. Having access to so many effects in one unit is also a plus if you’re not ready to buy a lot of gear. Glad you were able to acquire such a great amp. Thanks for sharing. Best of luck.

Very cool. It's like a mashup of a Mesa Triaxis and a T-Rex Spin Doctor with the motorized knobs that came out over a decade ago, but now in a small head version with a power amp section, a load box, and the added modern tech of onboard IRs. Limited to EL34s in the power section, unlike some of the Mesa stuff like the Road King which lets you go between 6L6 and EL34s, but the other features and form factor of the Hook make it more appealing. You start adding all those features up and you could see how a boutique head would cost this much.

That's a nice speaker simulation. I remember when Line 6 POD first came out, and then claimed to emulate an amp and speaker, and nope, it still sounded like you had lined a fuzzbox straight into the mixer. This sounded good.

It's funny, you had the same idea that I had when I was young. I also thought about a single channel tube amp with a bank of settings, allowing to have every sound you want with the andvantages of a single channel amplifier. Happy to see that somebody had the grips to translate this idea in reality.

Expensive but not that expensive if you see it as: tube amp + load + cab sim + app. I'm running a Marshall 1959 HW to a Rivera Rock Crusher to a Torpedo. Easily the same price range! 🤘

The Yamaha DG 80 does all this in a 15 year old amp that has never failed. 128 pre-sets, 8 different channels, effects, reverb, awesome sound and motorized knobs by Yamaha that are employed in current gear so are easy to source if they fail(which they never do). $300.00 - 500.00 on the used market - best deal out there.
@moskitoh26515 жыл бұрын
Simple answer: This is NOT the amp of the future. As many others already posted, H&K is doing something similar for a long time already. But a Kemper with Hook Wizard Profiles (coming soon) is cheaper, offers any other amp sound as well, allows uploading modified IRs as well... this is the future and it is available since 2012 still uncopied. Well and of course Kemper as well as H&K are german quality! :D

I cannot WAIT until the bigger amp manufacturers get onto this and the amps get cheaper. I have midi control on my Mesa boogie mark IV but I can only change channels, turn off/on the eq, fx loop and make it louder via midi control. Changing the knobs like this is insane and I cannot wait until that feature gets more affordable!
