Polish the frame rails and feed ramp and oil the disconnector real well. That should help with feeding. I had mag issues with three of the Springers I've build. Couldn't insert mag all the way with certain mags. After checking it out I found that when Springfield installed the ejector it was overhanging into the breach face, thereby binding on certain brand of mags. I just filed the ejector even with the breach face and all 9mm mags work. You may also want to run a finish reamer through the chamber if you plan on shooting any reloads. One other thing, check the extractor for proper tuning. That can effect feeding.

WOW! Lots of great info Jack. Really appreciate that. We did get this one running right after a trip to the gunsmith. He did exactly as you said. A lot of work on the rails fixed it. Thanks Jack! Great hearing from you and thanks again for the expertise.

Bought my Springfield Garrison 9mm 1911 2 weeks ago and im gonna say iv put nearly 600rds through it so far between ball 124gr and my 147gr +P hollow points i carry for self defense, which as soon as i opened the box at home i did polish the feed ramp and slide rails and gave it a good oil bath before my back yard range tryout, i didnt try the Springfield mags with it but i went with the 10rd Wilson Combat mags with the plastic follower in the mag, iv always had better luck with those compared to the regulr 1911 mags with the steel follower, i guess its just my luck with those mags because they obviously have worked for over 100 years on millions of 1911's lol, anyways great review of the Garrison sir, just thought id add my experience with mine so far, i actually prefer carrying my garrison over my nighthawk now as hard as that is to believe lol, this is my 2nd Springfield my first is the Springfield Operator Custom Shop fullsize railed 1911 in 9mm which is like a absolute dream to shoot, buttery smooth amd just beautiful hand crafted art, and my safe queen is a 1942 Colt WW2 issued amd it rarely leaves my safe lol

I ordered a Garrison from a local dealer that should arrive tomorrow. The only other Springfield that I have owned was a 1911 in 45 acp. I bought it new 35 years ago and it did the same thing yours did. It was a real jamomatic. I was already planning on doing major customizing from the beginning when I bought that one back then (wanted a race gun) so I switched to Wilson Combat mags and had a gunsmith switch all of the innards to WC and eventually put about 15k flawless rounds through it. I sold it over 20 years ago and have taken care to avoid Springfield up to now. I had watched about half dozen videos before I ordered this Garrison and none of the evaluators admitted to any issues so I took a chance. Those guns in the videos were all in 45 acp. like the one I have coming. I wasn't planning on having to do anything extra to this one so to be honest if I had seen your video first I would have passed on the Garrison. Sadly it looks to me like Springfield hasn't changed much in the last 35 years.

I hope you get a good one Dennis. I may just have bad luck. Having 2 back to back with issues is aggravating to say the least. I 1st had the 9mm then the 45. Feed and/or eject issues on both. Both spent time right out of the box with the gunsmith. He said this is becoming all too common over the past could have years. It's not something that is just Springfield by any means. The 9mm finally started shooting right after about 600 rounds but by then I had lost my patience. Then just thinking the 9mm was a fluke I got the 45. Nothing but a headache. I ran out of patience with that one much sooner that the 9mm. Now I have a Rock Island in 10mm (for my 1911). I have only shot it once but I have to say it has run flawlessly. Hope to get it back out of Sunday for it's 2nd run. Good hearing from you sir. I really hope you have better luck than I did. It seems to me that the gun feels and appears to be of good quality. The gunsmith said they are just pushing them out so quickly they just need work (not all of them). Please let me know how it goes. Would love to hear from you again.

So between Girsan, Tisas, Springfield Garrison, Taurus, and Ruger, which 1911 45 acp would you go with. I'm am almost sold on the Springfield... either the Garrison or Operaror.
@DadsGarageDIY Жыл бұрын
Very good question James. I haven't shot any of those. I did consider buying a Texas addition Tisas over the weekend. The only thing that kept me from it was not knowing much about it. I am a sucker for Texas themed stuff though so I almost did it. I can also say the machining and fitment was not nearly on the level of the Garrison. I have no experience with the others. I did pick up another 1911 though and have a video coming. I think I am going to get another 1911 this week in 45. This Garrison shoots really nice but something about the way it feels in 9mm. I am thinking it is the weight of the gun with the lesser pop of the 9mm. I have been trying to stick with 1 caliber of pistol and 1 caliber of riffle but I have to have a 1911 and a 45 is the only thing that feels right. I appreciate your question James.

The .45 blued model of the Garrison is my edc. Great pistol! Springfield should have released a 1911 with these features years ago. Sorry to hear about the issues with yours… 9mm 1911s can be a little tricky at times but the issues can be fixed

I’ve had it out to the range again. Still experiencing the same issues. I took 5 boxes of ammo. All different brands. Less issues with the better quality ammo but nevertheless still had at least one issue with each box. I will carry this when I get this thing reliable. I really like it though. It is super accurate. Even after 600 rounds and using only premium ammo I would still have an issue about 1 out of 50. So, I dumped it. I got a Garrison in 45 to replace it. Not sure if you saw my video on that or not. If not, spoiler alert. It went into full lockup. Took it to the gunsmith. He fixed it and I immediately sold it. Got a Rock Island Ultra in 10mm. Could not be happier. Have had it for about 6ish months now and it goes to the range regularly and I have not had 1 single issue. And is it accurate. Holy cow it is so good. And that 10mm is a cannon. Unless I missed something these magazines that come with the gun they only take 7 rounds there are 8 round magazines but you would buy those and there are 10 round magazines that you can buy but it would extend a bit more out the gun I didn’t really see that maybe that’s the problem I remember you saying you couldn’t get the magazine to seat in the gun

@DadsGarageDIY Жыл бұрын
They did. He got it working. Just did some machine work. He said quality control is so bad with many of the manufacturers over the past 2-years. He said this is very common now to get a gun straight out of the box with issues. I am personally getting sick of it. Of the past 10 pistols I have bought I have had issues with 5 of them. 3 requiring gunsmithing and the other 2 taking about 600 rounds of break in. It's really ridiculous. I'm to the point where I find a gun that runs right and just stay with it. Very frustrating. Good hearing from you Tom. I do hope I hear from you again.

3 months ago I bought a blued steel Garrison in 45 ACP. Accurate, reliable and the same glossy deep blue on the flats as the Series 70 Government Model Colt that I regrettably parted with some years ago. The blued Garrison retains the traditional appearance of the Government Model with the tweaks of a custom gun. Frame to slide fit feel like a hand fitted gun. For a mid tier priced 1911 Springfield Armory has done their home work with the 45 ACP Garrison. I paid 750 for mine at Kentucky Gun Co.

Yeah, I think we have that corrected now. We discovered it when he 1st shot a riffle. As I recall the range officer was over looking at one of our guns and he noticed that Joshua was kind of putting his face way over the stock (so he could get to his left eye). From that day we started working on that. I appreciate the comment. Look forward to the next conversation.

The only thing i dont like is the thin grips and bushings they put on this pistol. I think the 1911 with regular GI grips is about the most comfortable grip ever! The thin grips change to much. They should of just left it alone because I dont want to change out the bushings. Other than that the pistol is excellent!

Good video, and I had to get a snippet of when your son says, "This thing is so smooth!" I have a stainless Garrison like in the video except mine is 9mm. Don't listen to the playahs that say 1911s can only be .45ACP. That's just like saying any Pentium PC user should only be running DOS as the operating system in their computer. Time to evolve, upgrade and be enhanced! Especially with the price and availability of ammo, which caliber would you choose? But the gun is awesome, it talks to me everyday, demands that it sit on my lap if I'm at the desk, and drinks oil like it's going out of style. The fitment is amazing for a sub-$1000 gun, and I have to echo david-rec8hp's comment: Clean the gun, oil the gun, put rounds through the gun, use quality 124 grain ammo, and get a myriad of different magazines to try. I have Chip McCormick, Nighthawk Custom and Ed Browns, and they all work perfectly fine. My only misfeeds are when I use crappy ammo. Period. Get a Wilson Combat Bulletproof slide stop so that it can take the hammering, and like I said, keep her oiled! The more you shoot her, the better she gets, and the more you will know how to work these amazing machines. They have such personality and panache that you will learn as she grows as much as she develops when you watch! Good job, Springfield Armory. Now if I can only get you to email me back about getting rid of an idiot scratch... ;)
