The banjo is a stringed instrument with a thin membrane stretched over a frame or cavity to form a resonator. The membrane is typically circular, and usually made of plastic, or occasionally animal skin. Early forms of the instrument were fashioned by Black Americans in the United States. The banjo is frequently associated with folk and country music, and has also been used in some rock, pop and Hip-Hop, also created by the Black American community. Several rock bands, such as the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers, have used the five-string banjo in some of their songs. Historically, the banjo occupied a central place in Black American traditional music and the folk culture of rural whites before entering the mainstream via the minstrel shows of the 19th century. Along with the fiddle, the banjo is a mainstay of American styles of music, such as Bluegrass and old-time music. It is also very frequently used in traditional ("trad") jazz. Banjo is also a common instrument for Caribbean genres like Biguine , Calypso and Mento.

My grandma used to say "when in doubt what to buy, never buy the cheapest", and I think that doubly applies to instruments even for beginners. A cheap instrument with a not-enjoyable sound isn't going to be encouraging new players to keep on playing. If money is a limiting factor, I'm sure there are plenty of decent $200 used banjos one can purchase for a far better auditory experience.

But if you were like me when I started playing, I could spend 200 on a banjo, but couldn’t afford 500. If you have the money to spend then of course get a better banjo. But I have seen a lot of people who spend 500-1000 dollars on a banjo that has set in a closet for years

One night after having one too many to drink, I bought this banjo. I’ve been playing it for a little over a year and I’ve grown in skill, however as I did I started to notice the low quality of the banjo. The frets aren’t cut to size correctly and they’re sharp and you can feel them as you slide your hand up and down the neck. Also, the fingerboard is made poorly. Otherwise, the banjo has been good to me like I said I learned a lot.

Yes the banjo is not a high quality piece. But it sounds good enough to learn on . At an affordable price. It should last you until you are ready to upgrade.

FYI for anyone considering one of these, you can buy a brand new Gold Tone AC-1 for $250 direct from Gold Tone which comes with a gig-bag, and I'm sure you can find them for less from other stores. That may be a beginner banjo, but it sounds (and I'm sure plays) a heck of a lot better than this thing since its made by a legit banjo manufacturer. Also, if you ever want to upgrade, you'll be able to sell a Gold Tone AC-1, but good luck being able to unload one of these.

Lots of good points, but 250.00 is a lot more then 150.00. And if you are just wanting to see if you like playing banjo 150. Is easier to spend then 250. This one comes with a gig bag picks and a tuner. Is it a high end banjo …. No but I have not seen much difference in any banjo under 500.00. thank you for the input .

good luck with that outside of USA buddy. Finding a good + cheap banjo on the other side of the globe is impossible.

@@fullshark09 I can only speak to what I have experienced… but the cheapest banjo here is also the cheapest banjo on the other side of the globe. Because taxes and shipping is the same on every banjo .

@@BanjoAddict hmm dunno man. The catalogue and availability around there is very scarce plus shipping can get crazy. Plus there are those who don't deliver outside. Definetely not the same as the perk of having some real stores, not only to buy but also to repair your banjer.

Hey, I agree with you. And honestly talking about being cheap, I've actually rented a banjo from my local library for a month to see if it was really my thing (turns out, it was!). I got myself a gold tone (not the AC-1, but it would have been a sweet choice, I went with the CC-50 only and because I wasn't very found of the whole composit vibe). My second choice would have been a Recording King Dirty 30s.

What strings do you use?? I like daddario (from guitar experience) but I don't think anyone makes color loop banjo strings besides D'Addario

Is the resonator removable to play open back?
@BanjoAddict
@BanjoAddict 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it is.. but there will still be some bracketry around the pot that is used to hold the resonator on to the pot.

It's impossible to accurately judge an acoustic instrument via a KZbin video but... with that said, if I'm completely honest this banjo sounds quite bad to me. Can't say exactly what I feel is lacking, perhaps it's just personal preference. Sound pretty decent with the amp though.

Yea it’s definitely a low budget banjo but would work wonders for someone who doesn’t have the money to spend on a 500-1000 dollar “starter” banjo
