Is this the best Chinese car in SA? Haval H2 Review

Haval is a brand new brand on South African roads and we were afforded an early opportunity to test their first product to market: the H2 crossover. The brand is the luxury arm of GWM and the cars will initially be sold through those dealerships.
In terms of size it slides into the market alongside cars such as the new Hyundai Creta and Suzuki Vitara, the current title holder of Compact Family Car in our annual Cars Awards - see www.carsawards.co.za for more info.
However in terms of price, the Haval comes in a fair bit cheaper than both of those cars, and offers significantly more features, especially in the top-of-the-range Luxury Auto model reviewed here.
In this video we take a detailed look at those features and the range pricing, as well as discuss the turbo petrol motor, boot space and warranty and service plans. Oh, and we take a good look through the official brochure...

I bought an H2 Lux a month ago and drive it daily, I was sceptical at first but must admit that I am pleasantly surprised at the quality, features, fuel consumption etc etc. Notwithstanding the excellent price in comparison to its rivals. I highly recommend a test drive of this vehicle before you make a final decision. Keep it up Haval. Very proud owner.

Wow love my new H2 Haval im the 4th owner in the SA and so proud of it. Me and my 2 daughters just drove 900km alone and wow what an awesome laxury style of a road trip. So light on fuel. Love my chinese red colour. Thank you Piet Gouws from Gwm Rustenburg. I went all the way from Richardsbay to Rustenburg to get my new baby. Live it.

Yes, test drove both H6 and H2 and was very impressed. I have owned an Audi A4, a BMW3 series and currently drive a MBenz E240 wagon. The Havel paint finish, build quality and driving dynamics are as good as any of the other mainstream brands. At the current price, they are a very good buy. Was so impressed I bought an H2 for my wife. We did a trip recently from Tamworth-Sydney-Tamworth and Found the car very comfortable and pleasant to drive. Other popular SUV models/brands, should be worried!

Update on our Haval H2. We’ve had it for two years now and it still looks brand new and we love it! Exceptional value for money and remarkably comfortable on a long trip. We took it in recently for a service at Berwick Haval in Melbourne, and I was not at all surprised, when one of the sales team told me Haval sales are doing very well, and gaining in volume.

Have owned our H2 for over a year now....we love it! Great on a long trip, very comfy...here in Aus it was awarded a 5 Star ANCAP safety rating....everything still works perfectly....it still looks brand new....as for being Chinese, if that worries you...German 6 speed gearbox which is very smooth, all electronics by Bosch....looking under the bonnet you would think it’s an Audi or BM!

No need to go for a Creta or Vitara which are expensive if we look at what the R309k can get you here compared to the two calprits anf you are quite right, its a good product, not for a Chinese product but just a good product, like Huawei and other qualitative ones compared to the rest of the world production. We need a mental shift so that theres a far reaching benefit as a reasult of what the Chinese are achieving with minimal cost to the consumer! Great and entertaining presentation as usual

Claude Tasquier Sorry but none of them can beat the quality of European cars nor reliability. European cars are reliable if maintained properly. They are not cheaply made using basic stuff like the Japanese and Koreans. They are always ahead in terms of technology and drivetrain technologies. New and advanced tech costs more and so will obviously cost more and will require the required PROPER maintenance.

SDav21 Agree. We drive European marquee and the technologies have long been in place. They are probably testing the market and see how it will appeal to the price-conscious entry-level middle class. The design is not on par unfortunately. Good effort though.

SDav21 We don't actually need all the fancy tech in our cars. Things like cameras, navigator, touch screen infotainment system, sensors etc are not necessary. You can navigate your way using a smartphone and a Bluetooth connectivity is enough.

Here in SA 5 years later I dont see any of this model anymore, where have they all gone? Now it's the new model so buy and use them new and make a plan to get out of the deal or keep getting the new model for life. That's my take. Great review

here in tunisia they're giving a 5 five years warranty which means they probably give around 7 years in europe. so they're confident of the reliability. and tbf they can't afford to make a non reliable cars because this brand has just been launched and they have to establish a good reputation first otherwise they'll perish

Its an awsome SUV all round. Only thing is the fuel consumption is high in the 1.5T auto. The fuel range in inaccurate as well.

We saw these cars at the mall here in South Africa. I'm an American whose been living here now for over 10 years. The ANC government is not keeping the roads up and hence....a car with a high wheel base is needed. I was much impressed with the little Haval H1. We just might throw caution to the wind and buy one of these little beauties. My only concern is aftercare...
