Is this the best dust collection system for a scroll saw?

I have the older version and I have had problems with the bottom tube clogging up when I do fret work . The small pieces tend to clog the tube. Very informative video thanks Steve.

I can see that could be a problem. I have not experienced it but I wonder if a small piece of window screen would prevent the large pieces and still allow the dust to get through. Just a thought.

Thanks Steve. Great demo. I've been using a small aluminum cyclone to do the same task but I like the smallness of all the hoses. Not a bad price for the person who just wants something quick.

Thanks Steve. It's funny, cause I was looking to buy something like this and was looking for reviews on you-tube and saw your review of an earlier version. It seemed like you liked the earlier product but I could not get it at this time. I ended up ordering this newer version the next day without seeing this review. Somehow I came across this video (after) I purchased it. And you made me feel better about my purchase. So that is a good thing. I'm not quite sure why this video wasn't part of the video lists when I searched originally. None the less I found it and you answered some of the questions I had on it. So thanks

For those who are looking for a quiet vacuum another way to make one quiet is to place it somewhere else. You could leave it running and use PVC for the lengthy run. Or run a low voltage wire with the PVC and wire it to a relay. They also have wireless controllers for Large Dust Collectors that would work. The basic idea is to move it far enough from you that it isn't annoying anymore.

I do recognise the effective dustcollection. I use a blower to keep my cut clean which spreads dust in the air, therefore I use a halfface mask. My problem is the noise which comes with the vacuum. I will look into it more closely for the results are very good (!)

Hi Nico. Noise is the number one issue with dust collection on the scroll saw. I have tried several solutions with limited results. I think it will always be a trade off between the inconvenience of the noise and the health benefits of dust collection.

I have not found a vacuum that has a reasonable price and is low noise. The Scrollnado does not need a powerful vacuum so any 2hp vacuum will work fine. I have had to resolve myself to wear headphones and get used to the noise. For the most part, I have.

Question by ex16 dust collection....my lower clamp thumb screw knocks into bottom of table when I try to adjust angle to anything over about 30 degrees. Solutions? Thoughts?

Hi Steve Good job as usual. Looks very promising, but like others are saying the ability to find a vacuum that is quiet enough for several hours of use is my problem. I do use music head phones (at lower levels) and it helps some. But I am almost deaf, and fear this level of noise will further damage what little hearing I have left. Finding a quiet vacuum will be key, or better yet, a way to connect to my larger 4 inch dust collection that is located far away would be even better. However I wonder if it would still be effective when connected to that large of a pipe (4 inch ) ? Thanks for the demo and keep up the great job you are a real asset to us!

I use the Shark Lift Around portable vacuum with bungee cord holding the vacuum hose above the scrollsaw table and another below. I also use headphones and it's not loud without headphones. I don't think the Lift Around is available similar to Shark Lift Away that comes apart that I have for house use.

Hi Steve, Nice video and neat idea. Has your opinion of the Wen LL2156 changed since your review? I'm debating between this and the Delta. It looks like the tensioning knob goes almost all the way when tightening the blade. Does it apply enough tension? Thanks.

Hi Mahlen. I am still pleased with the WEN LL2156. I have received two emails from people who purchased the saw. They both had a noise and rattle problem. The first had a very good experience with WEN support and they sent a new saw. The second person is also getting a replacement saw but I have not heard any information on how their experience was with support. I have not seen any issues with the tension lever. It works fine. The choice between the Delta and the WEN is pretty even as far as quality. They both are nice saws. When the Delta is selling at a reasonable price I like the value. Sometimes when their supply is low it gets too expensive. Currently, Amazon has it for $$466. That's not a bad price. I have seen it jump to close to $800 and that is not a reasonable price for that saw.

Hello Sir,... Hope you won't mind a quick question.... The flexible light came off, it's connected like a ball and a socket, but so hard to push it back in. Do you have any idea in how to reattach it back? Or any recommendations in how to get it back in. Thank you for your time

Loc-line sells a 'pliers' to connect and disconnect those articulated ball hose thingy's. I have one and it makes it easier, but you should be able to do it by hand. If warming it up doesn't work and you can't do it by hand, then buy the tool. There are different sizes so measure yours but it most likely is the 1/4"

I have not noticed any interference. Plus it is flexible enough that it moves out of the way easily. I normally have the dust blower even closer than this extraction hose and it never gets in the way.

You always do excellent reviews Steve! Thanks for doing this one. Looks like something I should get but wonder if I could stand listening to a vacuum the whole time I'm scrolling. I have a Shop-Vac brand vacuum the same size and it's so loud that I hate to use it for more than a few minutes. Do you know of a small vacuum that isn't too loud?

Hi Lori. I resisted using dust collection on my scroll saw for years because of the noise. When we moved last year I ended up in a basement workshop, sharing space with the furnace. I now have to be much more careful with dust to protect the furnace. It took me several weeks to get used to the noise but I have learned to live with it. I wear ear muffs which helps. I have tried several vacuums and I can't say that any of them are quiet enough. There are a few vacs that claim to be low noise but they are very expensive. The Festool574930 claims 71db but cost $765 amzn.to/3dRvYhr. Too steep for my blood.

Hello Steve. I pruchased the Scroolnado from Amazon and I must say that I was truly disappointed in the perforamnce. I followed your instructions to the letter and I even returned to your web page to certify that I installed it correctly. I disaembled the unit twice and with care falowed your directions. I even went as for as using my big shop vac still without any success. I retern the uit for a full refund. There was absolutley no suction at all.

You think by moving the Upper Memory Tube closer to the back side of the scroll saw blade, that it would also help in reducing the blade's temperature during cutting and pick up more dust?

Hi Bill. The closer you get the tube to the blade the more efficient the dust collection will be but I don't know how much. It is already pretty efficient. As far as temperature goes it would be a total guess on my part. My guess is that it would not make much difference.

Hi Berta. I can not see any problem using the scrollnado as a top feeder. It is not much different than having the air blower close to the work piece.

Couldn't somebody just attach a vacuum hose to the saw's dust port and pull the dust out that way? I mean, the manufacturer had the decency to put a dust port on the saw, so you might as well *try* using that before resorting to aftermarket solutions.

Dust collection on a scroll saw is difficult. The included dust port does not do a good job of collecting the dust above the table. That is where aftermarket solutions come in handy. Wood dust can be a serious health issue for some folks so having options is good.

@@stevegood3224 I'm not arguing against aftermarket solutions; I'm arguing that this particular video is useless if you think about it for but a moment: * The saw can cut wood with or without the vaccuum and/or aftermarket device. * The vaccuum can collect dust with or without the aftermarket device, but can't collect dust if there's no dust being produced, thereby needing the saw. * The aftermarket device needs both the saw *and* the vaccuum. These dependencies immediately show that the vaccuum functions as an accessory for the saw, as does the aftermarket device for the vaccuum. Because the aftermarket device is an accessory for the vaccuum, the proper test would consist of a comparison between a vaccuum collecting dust from the saw *without* using the aftermarket device, and the same vaccuum collecting dust from the same saw *with* the aftermarket device. Instead, the author only provides us with the most obvious piece of information; that having *some* form of vaccuum-based dust-collection for the saw is better than running the saw by itself. Again, I'm not at all a fan of dusty environments, and were I to consider my saw to be unpleasantly dusty, you'd soon find me attaching various pieces of spare PVC tubing to it until the issue is successfully remedied. I'm simply arguing that the video's author failed to actually test the aftermarket device in a scientific manner.
