Yes it does lose quite a lot, quite fast due to the heat transmitted over to the cold cup so the temp check wasn't accurate. You should have checked the temp directly in the kettle. It matters not when you're prepping a tea but when you want to "fact check" the manufacturer, it does.

Hey Marc and Jamie! Thanks for the review on the Breville kettle. Beautiful kettle! A few days ago l purchased a Chefman True Temp Gooseneck Kettle. I paid the sale price of $59 rather than $79. I purchased the kettle because of its gooseneck design which l use for the pour over coffee technique with my Hario V60. I also make allot of teas like matcha green tea and other medicinal herbal teas. When l saw that your all of the temperatures were off in the review that sparked an immediate concern. I did try my kettle yet so l was concerned about the temperatures not being accurate as well. In which case l would return the kettle. The water temperature is really important in the proper extraction of the coffee beans l grind and use. The temperature l use is based on the kind of roast l grind up and the brewing method l use. This goes for teas as well. Some teas require a certain temperature of water for proper extraction. When l'm making medicinal chaga mushroom tea, l'm actually using a slow cooker on low for a total of 24 hours. Back to my kettle, l decided to take it out of the box and do my own test run to check for temperature accuracy. I filled the kettle to the max line and ran through each of the 5 presets. Now here's what l did compared to how you tested for temperature. Once the kettle beeped to tell me it had reached the proper temperature, I placed my digital thermometer into the kettle. I did not transfer the water to a cup and then measure the temperature. In conclusion, all of the temperature readings from all 5 presets were dead on. Even the extra Keep Warm preset kept the temperature within 5 degrees of the original temperature. If the temperature did dip lower than 5 degrees, the kettle would go into heat up mode and bring the water back up to the preset temperature. My suggestion to you would be that you do an update video. This time around try taking the water temperature from the kettle rather than a cup. Transferring the water to a cold cup will definitely reduce the temperature a bit. I know this from experience from brewing coffee by means of different processes. It doesn't take much time for water temperature to drop several degrees. Hope this helps. I'm glad my kettle is working properly, therefore l will not be returning it. I pretty sure the True Temp feature has something to do with the accuracy. I'm not sure what kind of technology Breville uses but l'm sure if you redo the test it will come up with better results. A kettle at that price range should perform with excellent accuracy. Cheers! 🇨🇦

Thanks for the wonderful comment! As you and others have pointed out, transferring to the cup lowers the temperature. I think our thought process at the time was: you would be pouring it into a cup to enjoy the tea, therefore in a real world scenario, what is the temperature of the water once your tea is made and/or steeping. I almost spit out my water at that price..wowzers! I'll happily use my $20.00 Chefman for my un-sophisticated Bigelow teas 😂 I only drink tea in the "fall" and winter months. Kids use it for Ramen and the like. But another great first impression video.

We have got the non deluxe Sage version. It's just called Smart in the UK and it costs £100. I think the difference I see with the luxe model (given Sage and Breville are the same thing) is the handle? But we really like ours.

Thanks for a new video , love you guys ! The Ninja one is a third of the price (or cheaper) and functions pretty much the same. As others said, the loss of temperature due to the heat exchange is normal. You can also see it when it stops actively boiling (reaches 212F / 100C and beeps), it will stop bubbling almost immediately. i'll stick with my cheaper ninja hehe. Cheers !

It looks like this kettle has plastic in contact with the water? No plastic in my kettle is my preference, getting harder to find for quality and UL or ETL Listing (fire safety). Edit: Your water temp should be read INSIDE THE KETTLE because pouring off ALWAYS looses some heat, usually minus 10 degrees F / maybe 3-4 C loss. I think I will have to go with the Fellow Corvo for tea temp and no plastic, but I am still watching reviews for the best solution out there currently. I expect prices to go through the roof after January 20!

@@TheAverageKitchen Right! If one wants a specific temp to hit the leaves, one must compensate in the water temp, hitting just a few degrees higher, as they do in places like Japanese tea houses. There they bring just to boil and then cool for a specific time, perhaps a minute for example, as part of the ceremony. It is a bit of a beautiful art form!

You should have pre-heated the mug to the desired temperature as well. Otherwise you’re going to transmit a lot of heat to the cold ceramic.
