I totally forgot about them. That is how much they bother me...and I just recently washed and waxed the car and didnb't even noticed them. Haven't actually even thought of them for several years now, well until this video. LOL

hahaha I hate them. It's the first thing I see on every other MX5 :D Specially on cars with the OEM wheel and tire setup

They don’t bother me. They likely help keep dirt and rocks from hitting the side of the car.

They bothered me a lot 🤣 and I don’t think they help at all for rocks being thrown to the side to be honest

I'm gonna try this. I have the same wheel size as you. It seems like my wheels need to come out about 10mm. That means I have to remove the axles to install longer studs for a flat spacer. The smallest bolt on spacers I can find are 15mm and I think that would be too much. I'll remove the ears for some temporary relief until someone starts making 10mm bolt on spacers.
@Themazcorner2 жыл бұрын
I have since replaced the wheels I now have 17x8 ET35 (Advan TC-4) they sit much nicer compared to 17x8 ET45 without spacers. Removing the "ears" will actually visual make the wheels look if they are sitting closer to the fenders, so that alone is an improvement

I used oscillating power tool to remove the small flap. It only took five minutes. Looks so much cleaner. Especially because I have installed mud flaps.

How can the car pass the next technical inspection after such a modification? Sweden is in the EU, so you must have the same regulations like the rest of the EU countries. And I saw you use the Cup 2 tires with an non-approved size 215/45 ZR17, is it so simple to get an individual request a for specific tire/wheel size passed in Sweden?
@Themazcorner3 жыл бұрын
I am 99% sure they won't even notice that they are not there. Also not sure if they are even needed in Sweden. Worst case I can just put back the new ones on. Also the same with regards to the tires it will in almost in all cases pass. It is not as as strict as e.g in Germany. Maybe if it would have been something extreme they would have something to say about it.
@mareknemeckay17513 жыл бұрын
@@Themazcorner Thanks for the reply, following your channel form the beginning, you've great conditions there in Sweden, love it. We've to have all the parts certified by the state (so called TÜV) for all the modification, which have to be also vey well documented in the car's registration and are being reviewed during the inspection.

You think they know about every detail of every car? Anyway if anything goes wrong he can just replace it for new ones or just put 50€ on the dash (if you want to throw out money) during the next attempt at a technical inspection... if 20 year old TDi octavia thats barely holding on from falling apart or 30 year old BMWs that push out black smoke can pass technical and emission inspections I can assure you an MX5 with 1x10cm plastic piece missing will pass it easily. (that skoda octavia 1.9TDi is a personal experience :D bought one for 500€ because one guy couldnt get it through inspections, solved it by putting 20€ on the dash..then the guy working there told me to work on the brakes and suspension if Im not planning on killing myself or other people on the road....but it did pass :D also the catalytic converter or whatever you call it in english was trashed so it wasnt really worth the money save in the end)

Nice video Maz but I wouldn't do it on my MX-5. It would feel a bit naked! Don't know... just my feeling. However I don't disagree with you those fender ears are ugly so I vinyl rap them to match my glossy black diffuser color and the look is much more nice.

These spats have a few of beneficial effects. They are not mud guards, they create a Venturi effect for air exiting the wheel arch, reducing drag, the effect most prized by car makers today being improving fuel economy.
@Themazcorner2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the do anything for the aerodynamics either. I think it's the fact that the bumper tapers so much so a to large portion of the rear wheels poke out to much and there are regulations on how much a wheel/tire can poke in relation to the car/fender
@dougiequick12 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...hardly even notice these on my black ND...they look just fine but I sort of get the offense on your pumpkin edition which btw I was drawn to buying that edition but my wife is extremely anti pumpkin so I opted for black instead ....have discovered since then (I was rear ended) that orange is the least accident prone vs black being significantly more likely to be the target of a collision....my car was actually totaled as a result but I retained ownership netting me a basically free car as I got nearly $10k more than I originally even paid! Which is plenty enough to "buy back" car ($4400 salvage value) and by then by shopping ebay used parts etc and doing the labor myself I get basically a free ND....albeit one perhaps not exactly OEM perfect anymore ...and now of course having the shame of a "salvage title" vehicle.....still will drive like new ! That is once I replace the brittle aluminum motor mounts which broke due to collsion I did not even initialy realize but finally discovered...btw al l ND owners should periodically eyeball your top engine brackets which can easily be seen looking down the sides of the motor ...these OE aluminum mounts are so weak/brittle that any significant jolt can crack me! Maybe even a good size pothole! There is only one company I can find that makes heavy steel aftermarket motor mounts for ND and that is AWR racing....but they are prohibitably too expensive if you ask me! If one were to buy the upper and lowers separately? Believe it or not over $800! for MIATA motor mounts!! Now for older Miata they are much more reasonable as multiple companies make em this completion drove prices down.....but sadly not so for our NDs!

@@Themazcorner They actually do perform a function. And are placed there to meet DOT requirements.
@Themazcorner2 жыл бұрын
@Iamadroid it's some regulatory crap, as the fender is so tapered the percentage of the tire sticking out from the fender become to "much" according to the rules. The ET on the OEM wheel is so high and the tires are sitting so tucked in the extenders do not provide any more function than just extended the fender to meet the ratio between fender and wheel
