The Britannia bullion coin was designed by Philip Nathan and first introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987. It has since established itelf as the official bullion coin of Great Britain and depicts an enduring symbol of a nation, boldly standing beside a shield that bears the Union Jack flag, a symbol of strength, and holding an olive branch, representing peace. Security was of big importance but so was keeping the original beauty of its design. The new 2021 edition was designed by the same team who bought us the UK 12 sided £1 coin. Read 'The New £1 Coins - What are they really worth?' here.
The challenge for The Royal Mint with the new design was to establish something current and upgrade the design with features that would limit fakes and forgeries. Advancements in new technologies and laser etching have meant that new textures and lines in the design have now become security features in themselves. This new technology has been used to the best of its advantage in designing this new 2021 Britannia coin.
2021 New Features
The coin has some distinct and new features. In the lower left-hand of the design, there is a circular panel below Britannia’s flowing gown showing a trident. As the coin moves, this trident turns into a padlock. Additionally, there is now surface animation on the coin, with the movement of waves behind Britannia. Both of these additions represent her naval history.
The Union Jack flag on Britannia's shield has also been improved and is now accented with tincture lines, creating further depth to the perceived colours of the flag.
The micro-text that borders the design says 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN', which translates to 'an ornament and a safeguard'. The writing is very small would be hard to replicate. All of these new additions enhance the coin's previous design and upgrade its protection.

The lady Britannia is pretty. The rest is a ducking eyesore. I love the Canadian maples for example, then they go and put that ugly key 🔑 symbol on it.

What blew me away was that "holographic" security feature is on all sizes of Britannias - including the 1/25th ozt version. I used to stack 1/4 Maples and Eagles, but the Britannia is now my coin of choice - even over here in the Colonies! The fact that I can buy a 1/4 ozt Britannia for 40-50 dollars less than the Eagle is just gravy. Now, some will say the resale is less in the Britannia, but it will not be 40-50 USD less. Mint engraving is such a precise art - and we are seeing some very beautiful coins in our time,.

Picked up my first the 1oz Gold Britannia ever and it arrived 10/31/2020, it is my new favorite coin, mine arrived in flawless condition, I would almost say it is a MS-70 it is that perfect, it has a beautiful clean strike and lots of very fine detail which I truly like to see in a sovereign mint coin, love the new security features for 2021. I used a 7x loupe to inspect it and it has truly amazing clean precise detail. I will be definitely stacking many more of these Gold Britannia’s. No more Maples for me, I am done with them after getting this Britannia. I wish the Eagles had some of these security features incorporated into them. Can’t say enough about the Britannia design, it is right up there with Saint Gaudens Lady Liberty in my book. Thanks for the review!

Hi Sal. As you probably know, our friend Junius Maltby just did a video on the exceptional anti-forgery features on this lovely coin. Will look at yours. I am fortunate to own 2 of these at present but hope to increase on that this year. They have certainly set the benchmark with this one. The only ones I like better for design are the Queen's Beast's series for which I am lucky to have the full collections. As BB just covered in his latest, some QB Platinum ones might be my next move to diversify a little.

When I heard that "security measures" were being implemented into coins, I got scared because I thought they were talking about placing chips or some kind of weird sticker that would have ruined the feel or design of the overall coin. Seeing this, I feel a good amount of relief knowing that the design will not be ruined.

10/10 for the 2021 Britannia. Fantastic design and security features. I would prefer it to remain the same to keep it's recognition as with ASE, maple, etc. I'm sure the RM will release some special edition bullion in future along lines of Two Dragons, Oriental Borders; and we have Royal Arms and Valiant too. It would be great if the latter two came up to the new Britannia standard. Well done RM.

I bought one 1oz Britannia 2021 gold coin and also a mini jewellery binocular to check the four security points. It is fun. The Britannia shied fine lines, the sea waves, the trident when tilted changes to a padlock, and the Latin ‘Decus Et Tutamen’ to go around the inner circle, translated to ‘an ornament and a safeguard’ are absolutely beautiful. Probably the most secure and most beautiful coin in the world. The silver 1 oz Britannia 2021, same features but the prints are not as fine as the gold ones. The Britannia gold coins are both VAT and CGT free.

It is a nice coin, but after finding milk spots on 6 of the mint sealed tube of 10 (2021 QB Greyhound) coins, I'm finding it hard to give them any more money. You were fair and honest enough to mention it in this review, but it's well past time for the Royal Mint to resolve this issue.

Really? I got FirstStrikes for about $3.99 over spot. I payed a premium for the mint tube but the singles were pretty reasonable also I try to keep my cost average low enough to where I can splurge when something like these pop up.

Brittannias were already my weakness but they really boosted the appearance on this 2021 release without making it tacky or losing the traditional look. Thats a very tight rope to walk. I'll let you know what I think when they arrive. Bought a mint tube and 3 Mintdirect PCSG FirstStrikes just for the hell of it. Definitely going to scoop a 1/2 gold specimen too IF and when gold drops a bit.

@@BackyardBullion I've never had an issue with a Brittannia but I have with other coins. Perth Kangaroos mainly. It's crazy because I always hear people talking about milk spots and Brittannias and I've seen the evidence myself online..I got a load of them going back to 2015 that are all still hanging tough. I'm super OCD on storage so maybe Ive just delayed the inevitable by overdoing in regards to controlling the coins environment. I'll be sending positive non milk spot vibes to you!

I totally agree with you; this coin would be the coin of the year for 2021. However, we need to wait till we see the new design of the 2021 American Silver/Gold eagle coins, then we can decide which coin is 2021 coin of the year. I absolutely love the Britannia I live in Canada and bought the 1/4 oz coin from the royal mint and just received it I’ll be doing a KZbin video on it I also just ordered the 1/2 oz yesterday and hope to have the 1 ounce coin later on this year. I should also purchase the 1/10 oz and have a set. I am also going to collect all the queens virtues coins as well I think they are amazing as well. I already go the first one I believe the second one is coming out later this year.

It looks fantastic. But like you said and my biggest issue is the milk spotting. My beast collection is the best example of the unfortunate problem. I wish they would lower mintages on some series and go direct capsule out the door. I'd give the coin 7/10

I was let down by the 2021 US Eagles, but I am SUPER IMPRESSED by the 2021 Britannias, will probably be buying more of those than Eagles this year for the first time ever lol. Exceptional job updating the design and security even without altering the central figure. Would definitely be interested with a new design in 2022 with these new features as well! The Silver Brits will be even larger diameter and I'm excited for them the most.

What a fantastic looking version of Britannia ! At last, she seems to "jump out" off the face of the coin, as I always felt the design of the whole coin was a bit flat, with everything merged together and a little busy on the eye. Looks like 2021 will see my first purchase of gold Britannia now, I love it ! 👍

Wonderful coin, the detail is awesome. I also like the design very much, no need to change it. The silver 1 oz 2021 shows the same level of detail and security features and is a cheap way of getting a very nice coin.

Gutted I have a collection of unique designs 1/4oz gold Britannias and there doesn't appear to be one in that size on the royal mint website. Hoping it will be released later and they haven't stopped that size . The Britannia proofs are usually always new designs shame the bullion isn't the same
