The mind-f**k that goes on when you’re doing intervals is real. I swear 6 intervals may as well be 66 and you feel like death, but THE SECOND you get to cooldown it feels like you could have gone more 😂

I try to time my "half way" so that I am also physically turning back toward home (like on an out-and-back). So I can then tell myself: "Just gotta get home." It's usually a massive psychological boost for me when I hit that point!

I am definitely going to try this one! Busy training for the Two Oceans Half Marathon in April. I always break my workouts up in chucks in my mind, ie. quarter way, one 3rd, halfway, etc. Jess, I can't believe you were still talking to us on those under reps.😯 Respect!!

Way to go Jess! I've only done over/unders for 10k training (shorter reps obvs), but towards the end I feel like a getting a piggyback as well!

Loving the workout series. I look forward to hitting that half way point. No matter what the distance it's such a psychological boost for me. In fact the longer the distance the bigger the boost. Might try this workout on Sunday. I'm marathon training and have a 32k long run planned.😱

One of the things I've found with the bigger interval sessions is the mental strength they build. I started being coached by Phily last spring and some of the early workouts defeated me mentally, not so much physically. I'm now able to grind more out in each session than I could. This has carried over into races and we'll see how much in Lisbon in 2 weeks! 16 x 400m is still horrible though!

Oooh, tough question! I do get a boost of "half way", but then it immediately follows with "now all of this again". Phew! :D Respect on your pace, Jess, so good!
@kritan8411 ай бұрын
I do not particularly enjoy the halfway mark, but as soon as it is less it feels great! For example in a hard 15k run, at 7.5k left I need to bring out the "This is hard, but I do hard things!" mentality, as soon as I hit 7k left it feels like a breeze and I can just happily tick down the kilometers left since more than half is done!

second half is always shorter than the first half because even tho youre running the same distance/time, the expectation is very different. in the first half i think "i have to do this half and then another half this is so much" in the second half i think "i already did one half, i only have to do one more half and then i can go home and eat" :)

Definitely. I found that you get to 21k and think “another 21k 😐” but once you get to 30k it feels like you’re nearly there.

I’m familiar with over-unders as a well known cycling workout but haven’t tried them running. On the bike you ride to a power number but harder to judge the paces for running - I’d consider it as treadmill session though

Is that some workout you would suggest as a Long Run of 25-32km while in a Marathon build up plan or more of a once in a while tempo training?
@kevinodonovan159311 ай бұрын
I bet Rose wasn't trying to talk through most of her workout 😉 On my approach, I try not to think about I still have X miles/KMs left but if I'm a bit tired or something I like to think about how much I've done, e.g. I've MORE than 10% done or MORE than 30% done or whatever, kinda celebrate what I've done vs dread what I have left. Have you kept doing it since, and are you seeing an improvement?

@MyFatAdaptedLife11 ай бұрын
@@runningchannel From Coach Ron Warhurst at the University of Michigan: Basically, you’re alternating between sections at marathon pace and sections at 5k pace. The first 2 miles at marathon pace and 1 mile at 5k pace won’t be too hard. However, by the second or third (depending on your experience level), you’re going to have to convince yourself you can go pick up the pace again. Not only is this workout a great lactate clearance session, it also trains your mind to let go of its preconceptions about what it can do. You’ll inevitably hit that second or third pick up and think “I can’t go any faster”, just like you would during a race. Now is the time to teach yourself how to overcome this doubt. Usually, you’ll end up running faster than you thought you could. Yes, it will hurt, but you’ll surprise yourself and you’ll begin chipping away at what your mind believes it can and cannot do. Even if you’re a little off pace, you’re still teaching yourself to face that self doubt and at least try to push the pace. Now, on race day when you reach that critical juncture and it’s time to push or back off, you’ll be better prepared to fight through it.

It's a good video but how is this helpful to the everyday runner? I'm much slower and this is not a practical workout for most.
@conordempsey885411 ай бұрын
It's practical for anybody training for a marathon where you're going to be doing a lot of structured sessions over a 2-4 month period. If you're running much slower then your intervals will be much slower but they'll be appropriate for you because they're relative to your marathon pace.
@emmarunyeard683210 ай бұрын
Because many different runners of all abilities sub to this channel and for some people this is totally apt plus anybody can adapt this for any race.. Even if you like me are a lot less speedy it can still be converted.. For me my marathon pace is 11.38 which is not fast by anybodies standards but I can totally use this too x
