As a custom coffee roaster for over 20 years with dozens of five star Google reviews I’d like to add my two cents worth. The best coffee is going to be from a local small roaster that you can find during your travels. The coffee will probably be a day or two from roasting and anyone in the micro roasting business will be more interested in quality than saving a few cents with cheaper beans. You’ll have superb coffee and support someone local. Brewing method is up to your preference but you must start with high-quality fresh beans.

I agree. My brother has a coffee roasting business in Atlantic Canada. The quality of freshly custom roasted coffee is superior to big batch commercial roaster. The quality control on each small batch roast us superb. Even when I can’t have his coffee, I will almost always go with a small, local custom coffee roaster - it’s coffee that just can’t be beat ☕️

We're both decaf drinkers. The wife likes her Dunkin Donuts Decaf, also the Joe's Decaf from Trader Joes. I like something darker, typically the decaf from Costco or the Trader Joe's decaf French Roast. At home we use a Ninja, it adjusts to make a short cup, 16 oz cup, half carafe 20 oz of 40 oz full carafe, and can do a classic brew (water goes right through), rich brew (a bit of water goes in to bloom the coffee, then the rest) and it has an ice coffee setting, which runs less water through if you're brewing over ice. Since we like different coffees and different strengths, we typically use our travel mugs. When we go camping, I use a pour through and the wife has an older 4 cup Starbucks Barista coffeemaker that makes 4 cups into a 20 oz carafe.

At home we have 4 coffee makers on our kitchen counter. My husband likes his coffee, LOL. For travel, however, we prefer a simple pour through. I even pack in my suitcase when I travel by plane. On Amazon you'll find (1) an awesome collapsable small hot water kettle. Heats in a minute. (2) silicone collapsable pour through cones. We have 2 so we just brew 2 mugs at the same time. Heat the water. Set the silicone filter with a brown disposable paper filter on top of your mug. Spoon in coffee. Pour a little water in to let grounds bloom. Wait about a minute, then finish pouring in water. Enjoy your hot smooth coffee. Clean up super easy, toss paper filter, let everything dry. Collape all to store. Purified/filtered water at temp just before boiling and freshly ground good quality coffee all matter. Love the methods in your video, results are awesome but for camping/travel ... Nespresso - great taste, love the crema you get, but pods are expensive. Machine needs to be cleaned/decalsified regularly or will slow down brewing time significantly. French Press - too "putsy" and cleaning out grounds in filter cumbersome when traveling LOVE all your videos, been following you guys for years! Thank you!!

My vote is a cold brew, it can be done with zero energy (no electric, no propane). I set it up the morning before, just add coffee, water and sweetener into the cold brew jug and it is ready 24 hours later each day. Simple, delicious and boondocking approved.

We love our Nespresso machine and we also use water from our Berkey (beats buying bottled water any day!). Nespresso has a very large variety of high quality coffees...anything from light roasts to dark roasts and from various countries. We used to love stopping at Starbucks and other coffee shops, but they don’t compare to our Nespresso, so we tend to just skip those places now.

I believe good coffee starts with freshly roasted whole beans ground right before brewing. Ensuring you have the right grind for the type of brewing method is also important. Then good quality water brought to the right temperature. We prefer course grind in a french press. We get our beans from Old Bisbee Roasters in Bisbee, Arizona. We get it 2 days after roasting. I am not a Barista but have been making our morning coffee (total 4 cups) every morning for 40 years or 58,400 cups of coffee. With all that said to each their own. Oh and don’t forget the right water temp in the 202-205 range for french press coffee brewing. And the appropriate amount of coffee to water ratio. I use 66 grams for 40 oz RO water.

I am a French press drinker. There are different size presses. I use a 20 ounce glass and metal one for home and a stainless steel thermal 12 ounce for the road. Both are Bodem brand. I've never scooped out my bloom. I let it sit while making my breakfast, plunge the coffee and enjoy!.

Grind your whole beans right before you brew... there are several small manual grinders that make the job quick and easy. Or, you can use some of the precious electricity and get an electric grinder. I use the Aeropress for brewing, which makes a nice strong, but very smooth cup of joe. Once you try the Aeropress with freshly ground beans, you won't go back!

My favorite is a good pour over using a chemex filter. I use a berkey, fresh ground coffee and put it in a wet chemex filter. Definitely bloom the coffee. With a Chemex, the filter is thick and will give more of a clean, lighter and sweeter taste. Unlike metal filters, a paper Chemex filter will remove more of the cafestol in your grind, which is a molecule found in unfiltered coffee. It just makes a beautiful coffee that taste great.

I would love to test out that Berkey water filter in WY. It tests at 915 unfiltered. We were going through a Zero Water filter a week. I found a place that has water (reverse osmosis) only 5 miles away. This was after my husband, the dogs and myself got sick because I wasn’t aware how we the water was.

All three (or 4)! and have the French Press, Nespresso, and replaced the drip with Keurig when it died. Got hooked on Nespresso as visited daughter in Switzerland where that is all they drink - and is owned by the Swiss company, Nestles. Obviously had to get one and Nestles does control all coffee blends for consistency plus free shipping recycling bag. Only issue is $0.70+ per pod so difficult to justify and now relegated to my afternoon cup. On re-orders, generally overnight shipping from distribution centers around the US, and now limited selection of pods at retailers. Morning cups, used a drip machine on timer, roll out of bed and there it was! When it finally gave up, obtained a Keurig with reservoir (unlike my son's) so easy in the morning and far less expensive at $0.30-.40 per pod. Also, can run a cup through without the pod for hot water - tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal packet, etc. Have the French press reserved for special occasions - and probably the best. Downside is the prep time, 2 cup limit, and messy cleanup. Also, best with course ground for brewing (and less press seepage past the screen) which can be difficult to find unless grinding beans as needed. While everyone should have a French press to experience the fine coffee, the Keurig pods can be recycled - cut the top to remove the grounds for compost/garden and the plastic remains go in the recycling bin.

The method of coffee making depends on how we’re camping & how many I’m making coffee for. I’m the first 2 methods I use small batch custom roasted coffee. I have my favourites but I also enjoy supporting small local craft roasters - they usually roast the best coffee beans. If we’re boondocking, I’ll make good old fashioned stovetop percolated coffee for everyone. If I’m just making it for myself I have a single serve pour over that I love. If we’re “plugged in, I cheat and use a small Keurig coffee maker either with a pre-made k cup or I use my own coffee in a reusable pod I drink coffee probably more than anything except water. I’ll frequently even have a cup before bed. Good quality beans, custom small batch roasted are the key, then good water - it makes all the difference.

I use the Stanley French Press for my travel coffee. It is easy to use and makes just enough coffee for me each morning. It is easy to use and easy to clean. The outside is metal but the filter press is plastic with a replaceable filter. I find it easy to clean with a wipe out. I love it.

Costco has a Blue Mountain blend whole bean coffee that is tremendous if you like a smooth coffee. You can’t make great coffee unless you use whole beans and grind them just before brewing.

I use a ADIRchef personal coffee maker (w/insulated mug), under $30 but works great and Dunkin coffee. I do use a No. 2 coffee filter too, but you don't need to (but to me makes smoother cup of coffee, and makes dumping the grounds super easy). I used to get the bagged Cracker Barrel coffee, but then couldn't get it. The Dunkin just as good to me and I really like it. Sometimes they have a deal going "buy 2 bags, get 1 free". I also have my ADIRchef plugged into a power module I can turn on from my phone or with Alexa....so I can set up the coffee maker and turn it on and start making the coffee while I'm getting dressed in the morning.
