Hilarious all the people calling for Trump & the feds to overturn California’s regulations. What happened to the “STATES RIGHTS” argument they used to justify taking away women’s rights? Either we let states decide things that non residents like or don’t like, or we make all decisions federal. Is the RV ban overreach? Maybe. But unquestionably CARB regs have turned around the horrendous smog California had in the 1970’s.

What about weak sales due to poor quality and lack of customer service. The RVIA has been useless and clearly does nothing for consumers! These new regulations are ridiculous. Zero emission vehicles don’t exist for these applications! And customers do not want them! Residents will eventually register in other states and change their residence. Massachusetts has idiots in its DOT and campers will move to NH!

A great opportunity for RV rental companies to sell off units after 7500 miles. Maybe new business opportunity for Newmar to rent. Then, they can actually deliver fully tested products.

COMMENT. I'm proud of my diesel engine and hate to see them retire this way. If the RV manufactures were doing their part, they wouldn't be in this fix. If they were making smaller Class B and C EV RV's, they would have credits to continue selling the larger Class A diesels. Your comment that the technology isn't there yet to power the large motor homes is incorrect. And that the tires and framework would be so huge that it would damage the roadway is also incorrect. My brother drives a school bus. He said the school district recently purchased 2 large EV buses. He said they have 2 batteries - one on each side between the front and back wheels about where the fuel tank would be. He said the batteries weigh about 1000 lbs which is about the same as the 110 gal fuel tank on his bus which weighs about 900 lbs when full of fuel (anf no heavy diesel engine). He said the drivers love them. They are a lot more powerful than the diesels. At the end of a 100 mile day their batteries are still about 3/4 full. He said they have infarred heaters under the windows along each side which run from the front of the bus to the back. He said when they turn the heaters on, it is instantly warm in there and the kids love the heat. The average weight of a school bus is 25,000 to 36,000 lbs, so very comparable to an RV. The most accurate point you make is that the industry is not ready for them. Imagine driving into a campground and plugging into a 50 amp electrical pedistal to run your 3 air conditioners on your RV. Now, where are you going to plug your vehicle into to charge your vehicle batteries, especially if you are only there for a 1 night stay. And to make matters worse, most of the RV's in the campground are EV's too. The campground doesn't have the electrical capacity or infrastructure. 5th wheel manufacturers like Keystone and Grand Design have been converting to solar power with panels on the roof. If a Class A had 4 or more solar panels on the roof, maybe it could recharge the EV batteries.

I went to episode 422, November 2022, that you reference in your report on the California MH ban, but found nothing about this in that episode. Did you misspeak?
@hbjtf21 сағат бұрын
I’m concerned that misinformation is being generated by multiple sources. I looked up the regulation and while concerning it’s not as being suggested. A direct quite from State of CA website is: The regulation applies to trucks performing drayage operations at seaports and railyards, fleets owned by State, local, and federal government agencies, and high priority fleets. High priority fleets are those entities that own, operate, or direct at least one vehicle in California, and that have either $50 million or more in gross annual revenue, or that own, operate, or have common ownership or control of a total of 50 or more vehicles. The regulation affects medium- and heavy-duty on-road vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 8,500 pounds, off-road yard tractors, and light-duty mail and package delivery vehicles. 😢 RVIA has concerns but their beef is with Freightliner, as a primary supplier of chassis to large motor homes, as it appears Freightliner assumed everything would work out and perhaps they did not prepare as aggressively as they might otherwise have. Maybe it’s impossible to meet the regulation. I don’t know. However, if you breathe polluted air in several spots of CA you applaud the direction being taken by CARB. If you don’t live in the Inland Empire of CA, for example, you might be interested in knowing those two counties have almost 6 million people. That’s bigger almost half of all states.

There is a easy Fix. The law says you must sell 11% electric vehicles over 8,600 pounds GVWR. So if Newmar buys 11 of the Rivian built Amazon vans, then sells those to Amazon, they can then sell 89 of the motorhomes and still meet their regulations. Amazon is buying well over 110 of the electric vans, so that is good enough for 890 RV sales.

My career is in environmental work in California. I'm non-partisan. This is ridiculous. While I appreciate clean air in California, there is NO WAY there are enough charging stations to convert to EVs only. And really, I won't RV in an EV at this time. Not enough infrastructure, and I'm not waiting a half hour to charge. And, there ARE no EV RVs to my knowledge. They would have been better off having passenger cars going to a majority hybrid, which I can get behind. Our gas is $2/gallon more than in Kansas, for example. They are adding a minimum of likely 60 cents/gallon. I love my state. It's biologically, geographically, and culturally diverse. But this is not the time to do this. Everyday people are feeling the pressure in this economy. I pity the state workers who will have to implement this; it's the politicians, not the staff, to blame. And lobbyists.

@buckdashe2571Күн бұрын
There is no “motorhome ban.” A system of credits allows manufacturers who can’t meet the requirements to buy credits from those that do, giving them “the flexibility needed to sell as many internal combustion engines as is needed to meet market demands.” (Quoted from CARB.) This new rule is primarily directed at diesel powered units but yeah, some gas powered RVs could be affected. Leave it to KZbinrs to generate hyperbole.
@JamesBrown-ux9dsКүн бұрын
I think this is not completly true? The change in regulation first and foremost could be meant to enforce a change of the equivalent motorhomes at offer and sold in California? I think there are a great number of possible solutions, downsizing of petrolengines for instance plus use of electric assistance - called hybrid drivetrain?(1) Would come with a lot of benefits for the owners too, like up 30 to 40% less consumption while traveling? Or build in onboard battery for stationary use too? 1 - Mercedes Benz for instance years ago went from 6.3 liter naturaly aspirated to 5.5 liter biturbo low boost to 4.0 liter turbo high boost - and increased mileage signifikant with every step. And now hybrid and full EV of course - USA is just the child no left behind. (A turbo just harvests the otherwise unused temperatur and kinetic energy in the exhaust fumes )
