Is this the best tabletop grill for RV living? - Pit Boss Tabletop Pellet Grill and Smoker

We have been using our Green Mountain Grills (Davey Crockett) grill for two years. It has performed well but is just heavy and hard to get in and out while traveling. We were looking for a lighter option and came across the ‪@PitBossGrills‬ tabletop pellet grill and smoker. In this video we unbox and setup the unit and it did not disappoint. I full time RV for work and bought this. It caught on fire and almost burned down my truck. It did this after fully shutting down on its own. It was the 4th time I used it. It was clean and operated properly. I've used pellet grills for 14 years and never had one do this. Pit Boss will not stand behind their products and should be avoided. I will be purchasing that GMG grill you showed. It seems to have great reviews.

Just wondering about the pellets you were using. I've seen a few videos that mention burn back issues with softwood pellets, and very dusty traeger pellets. Keep in mind with the tabletop grills, it's a very short auger so it wouldn't take much to burn back. Sorry, one more point, if you don't latch the hopper lid down, that will provide a path for air and heat and smoke to travel up the auger and cause issues, especially depending on wind direction and velocity.

@Scoopy2022 I was using the PitBoss brand pellets since they were readily available at almost any Walmart. You make a very good point about the auger length. The design should include provisions to prevent the burn back. The fact that burnback is such an issue is unsafe in itself. It would not take much engineering to design an inexpensive door/chute to prevent this from happening. As far as the lid gasket, I was told by their technical support to always start and stop the unit with the lid open. After the unit burned, the gasket was toast. Pitboss advised me it was not necessary, and I needed to "Get back to grilling". I tried the unit one other time and while trying to reverse sear a steak, the unit caught fire again when trying to increase the temp to 400 deg. I watched it through the whole process since it burned so badly the first time. These units should be re-called. The design is unsafe. I don't review many things at all and only hope to save someone from being hurt or worse. Be safe!

Me too haha how is it fueled tho gas or what. $140 I bought a same size smoke hollow grill for a bit more then that normal price and, it's neat, but I burnt tri tips at the river having fun. This I can imagine u can set like the rest of there line up to avoid expensive meat burning.

It uses wood pellets. You can get a temperature probe for it, to see what your meat temp is at, right on the built in screen, lol.

Iv bought his and had nothing but issues. Didnt work out of the box properly. Fan wouldn't engage. Returned it. With the new unit worked good for 2 times smoking with it. Then the fan started surging and would never get up to heat. Phoned pitboss they sent a replacement board. Worked good 1 time and its back to surging and not getting to heat.. i would not recommend.

I purchased this unit a few months ago and used it about five times cleaning it out after each use. I just used it to cook a pork butt and after about eight hour it over heated and damaged itself. Pit Boss will not stand behind their product to replace it. The customer service agent refused to transfer me to a supervisor. This is a terrible company with terrible customer service. This is not a safe grill.
