Hey! I live in Klamath Falls! Thanks for showing everyone some of Oregon's beauty! Normally, in November the park has too much snow to allow travel through the whole park, that's why the roads are closed. Yes, the little island is called Ghost Ship. If you look really close at the lake, you might even spot the old man, which is a tree that fell into the lake years ago and is still floating around, vertically, not horizontal like you would think.

We were at Crater Lake on April 29, 2018 and of course it had lots of snow everywhere. We hiked and snowshoed in the opposite direction that you did for an hour or so. Great time and not a huge amount of people then especially as we got away from the parking lot. We took in some falls and a place called Avenue of the Boulders in Prospect near where we were camping for 2 nights, also some other stops along the Roque River.

We're from England and we visited Crater Lake in 2015. It is amazing and the colour is staggeringly beautiful. We hiked it in June and had to hike through snow near the summit. Apparently the colour is because nothing drains into it and all the water is from precipitation. Oregon is an amazingly beautiful and diverse state. Looking forward to returning.

Had a nice visit at Crater Lake late this summer, a "calendar" day with lots of nice white clouds to add the scene and my pictures. I am heading past it today on the way to Medford, I will enjoy the snow and perhaps stop for lunch at Diamond Lake if its open. The drive from Central Oregon to Medford is beautiful any time of the year. After 50 yrs in the area, it my first winter time travel. Enjoy you work, I am past the hiking age, so thanks for taking us along.

Enjoy your drive my friend! A beautiful area indeed, I would suggest if you get a chance in summer to drive to the Fremont Point viewpoint above Summer Lake and Paisley. I went to Crater Lake NP in August of 2019 and had a totally unexpected experience. I thought I was going to camp in the park's campground and spend the next day exploring the park but it was not to be. Upon first entering the park I drove through some scenic meadows, very pretty, but once through those the experience got darker. The rocks were huge, jagged and forbidding. The road switchbacked with steep drops in places. Now I've been on plenty of roads like this but the scenery somehow made it more of a tense experience. Then I came to the lake. The lake is at the bottom of a caldera with almost perpendicular sides that are several hundred feet high. Not a normal lakeshore by any stretch of the imagination. By now I'm just not enjoying myself. I feel like I'm not on the planet earth anymore, more like on the moon. I think your comment about feeling like you were on Mt. Doom in Mordor during your hike was right on the mark. Long story short- I took a few pictures of the lake and got the heck out of there. Luckily there was a national forest just north of the park and I found a nice campsite on a nice friendly lake with ospreys and fish and had a fine time. Stayed there for 3-4 days. I doubt I'll ever go to Crater Lake again.

I worked up there this last summer looking at the lake for 2.5 months. It truly is an amazing place and count myself very fortunate . Some days the lake is super super blue and other days not so much. The lake is so blue because there in no inlet for water and no outlet. All the water comes from snow fall and rain. The water level of the lake only varies by a couple of feet a year. They can get upwards of twenty feet of snow at the rim.
