It's sad that a few bad apples ruin it for everyone. Lawmakers similarly are destroying the scooter hobby by imposing ridiculous 15mph speed limits. Seriously, a pedal bicycle goes 35+mph. I wish people would ride responsibly on the roads. If they want to go crazy that's fine I totally get that, but do it off-road. Lawmakers don't ban all motorcycles because a few idiots like to weave through traffic unsafely, or go above the speed limit, they just give them a ticket for reckless driving or speeding. Lawmakers need to do the same with PEV's (both scooters and EUC's.) PEV's can be ridden both safely and unsafely just like any other vehicle. It's not fair to punish everyone for the actions of those that think the law doesn't apply to them. I use my PEV's as a replacement for my car. When I'm on the road I ride responsibly, obey the speed limit, and slow down to a reasonable relative speed when passing other bicycles in the bicycle lane (or pedestrians on the sidewalk.) If I want to have fun, and 35mph just won't cut it (that's pretty rare honestly) then I take it off road for the added challenge.
@jeffs4483 Жыл бұрын
I told you they would get banned. Only reason it's taking so long is because the general public favors electric vehicle technology over ICE and they are relatively quiet and small. Just look at the electric bike market. Groups riding around on electric dirt bikes (Surons) going 40mph.

I guarantee most of the community when they watch this will have so much input with their minds going. The crux of it is that the EUC is still a new transport. When cars came on the scene drivers had to step out of their vehicle and honk their handheld horn to make sure the cars presence was known. It was horse versus scary cars. Now, we have the vested interest and are charged with evangelizing the benefits including safety. People always react that I must be crazy until I explain going over the handlebar on a bike or scooter. But if we can’t prove the safety and make people feel comfortable we become rogue. As an aside In AZ (where I live) my unicycle has carte blanch categorized as pedestrian until I go over 17mph. I can even just ride it in front of the police on the crosswalk.
@submijiru Жыл бұрын
When cars first came, there weren't any rules other than asking city dwellers to remain on the sidewalk, as the roads were reserved for carriage traffic. You and your car were on common land, and if you crossed paths with someone else, you were supposed to negotiate your way around each other as if gentlemen participating in foot traffic. -"No, you go, sir. I'm in no rush." -"Oh, no but you go, kind man. The air is quite pleasant where I'm standing." Except you weren't both gentlemen.. one of you could afford a Ford automobile, and the other one was an unruly child let loose to play on the streets with sticks by some peasant. And to argue that a car would be at fault in a tragic accident, for silly reasons like travelling faster than a gallop (who can tell really?) or for not having properly listened to the salesman's brief instructions on how to operate such a vehicle, or for god forbid not yielding to a pedestrian pauper crossing the street on foot like some deranged madman, well, that would be some sort of communist attempt at class warfare by a disgruntled worker that lost maybe one or two of their five children that week. The only reason a driver would be at fault, was when he failed to pay five shillings for his license, but that rule would be introduced much later.

A few weeks back there was a e-scoot that spontaneously combusted in the chief anesthesiologists room. The damn hospital floor was emptied and emergency services came in, the hospital was ventilated to evacuate the gases etc. All the while my V8F was downstairs in my locker :D There must be 0% risk of battery fires. No exceptions. I'd much rather ride an EUC with 25km range and 25kmh top speed and nil risk of fires than one with 90kmh top speed and 200km range.

Is battery fires even a problem on EUC anymore? Hasn't it been more than 2 years since wheels with faulty packs were sold? I don't think I hear about any fires on moderns EUCs now, unless the packs have been damaged somehow and people are ignoring the damage and keep riding and charging? Also you mentioned that electric cars have the most fires, but even so, they have less fires than ICE cars. Besides, there is new battery tech 'just around the corner' now, that poses no fire hazard, so it's only a matter of time before we see packs made from those elements in our EUCs or people might even just buy those elements from china and make their own packs.

About the batteries, I would love to see a good alternative. For example, there is a serious possibility that sodium batteries will replace lithium batteries for some applications. Small electric vehicule could be one. I don't mind having a bit less range and a wheel a bit heavier if the chances of my home going in smoke is now close to 0. Sodium batteries is still new/in development though. But it's just an example.
@Dennymolv Жыл бұрын
I agree there needs to be a battery solution but I am 100% a range guy. If batteries get heavier it reduces range even more. A good BMS on EVERY PEV would go a very long way towards significantly reducing the issues we currently face without increasing weight or reducing range.

The battery issue is the main thing to keep an eye on to avoid a ban outright. If you can't get renters insurance because they're worried your EUC is gonna burn the place down, that'll be the end of them. Otherwise it's a respect thing. If people are constantly crashing during big group ride events, that's not a good look and stands a good chance to get these things restricted at least.

Every time I've commented saying we should be pushing for registration and regulations I get shut down by people who think burying your head in the sand and singing la la la is going to make it go away. These devices were never really legal, just flying under the radar. With fires, accidents, etc, flying under the radar was never going to last forever. If we want PEV's to work, we should be pushing to work with lawmakers for eveyones safety. Advocating for basic safety regulations (like proper batter protections) and very basic accountability (like moped style 1-time registration) would go a long way to securing a safer future for the hobby instead of being illegal on the streets hoping to be ignored by police. If we don't work with and push for regulation, they will do the easy solution, a blanket ban.

@kmg501 Жыл бұрын
@@OWGAC Yes they really are aiming to kick people out. I have first hand knowledge here. You have to remember that there are many people with rent controlled leases so there isn't a free market effect here. A given landlord can have a very strong incentive to bring action against people for just this reason, because if they can get them out they can typically get market rates for the unit which translates to a four times (minimum) increase. So any attorney fees will be quickly negated.

Imo, the biggest danger to EUCs is that they are not manufactured locally and triggerhappy legislators might want to regulate anything other than e-bikes out of existence. Iirc, in the EU we currently have a 65% custom duty on e-bikes from China (and this is before VAT.) I honestly don't understand how there isn't any real competition yet in the EUC market. You'd think the advantage China has would be it's huge lithium industry, but it not because EUCs have no use for massive LiFoS batteries. It's just rapid hardware innovation Elon style ("The best waterproofing, is no water") incubating start-ups and throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Making Shanghai as the hardware version of Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, we have advantages that China doesn't have like technology start-ups developing supercapacitors, and other cool tech that's just itching to revolutionize micro-mobility. But the problem the West has-even though software development is the Wild West and tech companies can cook up all kinds of new ways to rob people from their money, data, mental wellbeing, or all three at once-nobody wants to invest into manufacturing because you can't get permission or an insurance policy for things that don't exist yet.

Exactly. I keep harping on that as well, as the only thing government officials value more than their laws is money, and we definitely need several western EUC manufacturers in order to achieve hard enough economic consequences if they are being banned or regulated too hard. It's very strange that there aren't any manufacturers still, especially as the climate reports keeps getting worse and worse; you would think they would look up lighter alternatives and not just go all in on EV cars.

They seem to have passed something already in NYC, haven't they? They adopted the ebike rules. And since the EUC is mostly not speed limited to under 30 they need to be registered with the DMV, which would be impossible. They could confiscate it. The UL question: everything needs certified, not just the batteries. How are they going to certify the EUC? I don't know how.

The humble EUC should get praise for being the smallest foot print vehicle to move a person around town. The fun aspect is just a bonus. Nothing else can take you work, let you carry groceries in both hands, cruise at wlking speed while visiting with friends, rip a mnt bike trail (or jump a cayon gap of your shibby). Accomodate riders any damn near any age from 3yrs old to firmly retired (my dad is 72 and loves to ride on amd off road) all while being portable enough to fit under your desk. The only barrier to entry is the learning curve, and the growing cost of the new crop of amazing wheels. I dont think an outright ban is plausible anymore, but i do see regulation coming, just like the 28mph limit to ebikes. EUCs that can go highway speed outta the box will be viewed like group B rally in the future. My advise is to get these beast wheels while you can, if the powers that be limit them to 28 mph, or possible even ad low as 20 mph this hobby is going to get a lot less fun. In my opinion everyone whos able should have an EUC, but im a bit bias....just a little 😂 Thank you for waisting another 15min of my life, its always worth it!

With regard to laws that impact the EUC community negatively: I saw a sign at a restaurant in Arizona that said "careful on the path you can fall." WOW, who ever thought that people could ever fall when walking. Same here, a complete misunderstanding of what wonder an EUC really is and though people can try to stir up emotional (read that as ignorant) responses in favor of banning the PEV or EUC... these same people are worried about a plane dumping blue ice on them LOL.

Regulating batteries to some degree would be good for a lot of reasons. Fire safety top 1 or 2 on that list. Or at least mandatory voluntary reporting of safety and construction on a regular basis. Dude, I don't care if it's EUC or bicycle, the videos you posted are of total assholes set on ruining it for everyone else. Riding like that in traffic just makes you the prick. It's like the idiots splitting lanes on motorcycles at 70 or shutting down traffic to stunt in the middle of the street. Gives us motorcyclists a bad image even though 99% of us would never do it.

We need some reputable compagnies to make reliable products with good and tough build. I’m amazed that no canadian or us compagnies made some yet. I have a Esk8 (LoneStar Supersport) and a s22. Both decent products with smart bsm (witch i think should be a requirement for every pev) and am careful with the charging cycles. Over 20k km(12.5k miles) done so far and countless gallons of gas saved. I can’t imagine going back to only using my car like before. In the long run, electric light weight transportation modes are definitely the way to go. I really dont need to drag a 1.5 tone vehicle 30km every morning to go to work when i can do it with a 90lbs one. It’s just a total waist of energy.
@YeeLeeHaw Жыл бұрын
_"We need some reputable compagnies to make reliable products with good and tough build. "_ Absolutely, what we need is western manufacturers more than anything else, as the governments will have a very easy time banning the sales of niche Chinese products. It's always harder to put laws in place on already established and popular products, and the EUC world is about to move from the safety of being obscure enough to go under the radar to being popular enough to be seen by the mainstream; and when that happens the government will start ruin the party. _"In the long run, electric light weight transportation modes are definitely the way to go. "_ Unfortunately our governments and lawmakers are completely incompetent and detached from reality. I can only get worse when we speak of laws, even if in this case it means people will never ditch their climate heavy cars as an effect. If things get worse, consider moving to New Hampshire and help the libertarian movement there, just don't take any libby mindsets with you.

Just a hint: the one and ONLY reason why EUCs are banned in some of EU states is the reason that there is no crash insurance on them, which is a duty to have a insurance for every vehicle motorized. But Eucs, as they are not a car or motorbike, can not get an insurance. so, imagining i drive my EUC on a street and for example be resposible for a gigantic crash with cars, trucks, whatsoever, these other cars, trucks are left without ANY compensation. and NO, my private insurance for wrongdoing also will not take over as participating in traffic is NEVER included, only on bikes driven by leg power! i ask myself how this is handled in the US…..as certainly every car or motorbike will have insurance, or? And thats the -short- reason why in the EU we will NEVER get any Euc allowed(and so have the ability to insurance)…as it ONLY has regen braking….and NO redundancy whatsoever, not possible on a ONE wheel! Imagine a Tesla car having ONLY regen braking….it would NOT get a license in ANY country as when motor fails ,it just would be a rolling bomb, so i even understand Euc ban a bit! Some countries allow them under „bike law“ but not going faster than 18mph/25kmh…..(France for example). But when they CAN go faster…illegal, too, because of same reasons as written above…. Thats why we dont have so mich drivers/owners here, because when seriuosly crash, you are broke for the rest of your life…..

every new technology is initially perceived as a threat until it becomes a norm. Unicycles are no exception. However, it is important to understand that with the rise of any new technology comes the responsibility of the users to behave in a safe and respectful manner towards others sharing the same space. As drivers, we should all act like adults and prioritize safety over reckless behavior just to earn a few likes on social media. Driving a unicycle at a speed of 30mph between people on a crossway is not only dangerous but also tarnishes the reputation of responsible unicycle drivers. It's essential to recognize that with time and practice, every unicycle driver can become a traffic master and blend in with other modes of transportation on the streets. We need to ensure that we respect the rules of the road and the safety while riding our unicycles. Therefore, instead of banning unicycles altogether, it's crucial to promote responsible use of this technology by setting clear guidelines and enforcing them. Let's make sure that unicycles become a normal and accepted mode of transportation on our streets by respecting the rules of the road and the safety of others.
