Worth mentioning that stability is not directly related to wheel size. Instead it has to do with rotational mass which is only correlated to wheel size. Understanding that rotational mass is what matters for stability leads the viewer to understand many other important things. Like how rim weight like on the V13 affects things. And also leads to the knowledge that if you could add and remove weight on the spinning part of the wheel you would be able to change the stability vs responsiveness without needing a different wheel. There is also the unmentioned fact that a larger wheel leads to a smoother ride over alot of non-smooth ground, since the larger wheel size dips less deep into divots in the surface. This fact is most obvious if you look at a tiny wheel like on scooters. Large wheels also need to deform less on smooth ground because the arch that touches the ground is more parallel which leads to more surface touching the ground and therefor more grip, especially important offroad, in the wet, or when riding over metal. The larger surface touching the road also leads to the higher likelyhood that you ride over divots instead of partially go down into them leading to a smoother ride aswell. Also because of the larger surface touching the ground the tire itself requires the ground to "displace" more air when you hit the flat ground from a jump... leading to a lower chance of bottoming out the tire and hitting the rim when landing on flat surfaces (So doesn't help when hitting a stair edge for example). Which means you can ride at a lower PSI while retaining the same threshold to bottom out from jumps and other drop-downs, leading to a smoother ride since lower PSI allows the tire to deform to the roads uneven surface more. Edit: A larger wheel also moves the axle up which results in the force you apply while accelerating being farther from the pivot point and therefor giving you more leverage, making it easier to pivot the EUC forward reletive to the wheel which is what you do to accelerate. Same applies to braking aswell. Imo a large wheel diameter with a minimized rotational mass and the ability to add rotational weight optionally if you want to have a more stable ride would be ideal since you get the best of all worlds. I do wish rotational mass was a part of the spec sheet for these EUCs.

Yes this makes sense - we should have a spec of the wheel inertia. It would change with tire change, but at least it could be compared on stock tires, and perhaps even recalculated if tire manufacturers gave it.🧐🤓 Was also wondering if a spoked rim would make bigger wheels have less inertia, then spoke weights could be added to increase inertia. 🤔🤓

I learned all about stability when riding in the night on a mountain road and I came upon a hairpin turn and it was so dark my headlamp was not able to show me where I was going. The moment I lost track of where I was going the wheel became unstable like I was a total beginner! I almost crashed! Even though I had plenty of room to roll. I immediately clicked on my handheld spotlight and as soon as my brain detected where I needed to go the wheel became stable again. That was a lesson to me as to how much you do to keep your wheel stable even though you don't think about it anymore.

Being on euc feels like being at the top of a mountain on skis. Any direction I point is downhill. Our thought patterns certainly are linked to our sensory inputs. Consider colloquialisms such as “I see what you’re saying” or “I won’t stand for that”. Those are both abstract metaphors derived from physical experiences.

I'll share my experience with the EUC search for stability. I started out in August of 2022 with the V11 (18" I think). I am 5'-10" weigh 180 lbs. It was difficult at the beginning, and it felt like a ton. But, looking back, it was an excellent wheel to learn on. It had perfect speed max for a beginner and great suspension- ok stability. It was the search for the right pads that I was after and the pedal adjustment and height, so I Impulsively acquired the Kingsong S22 (20" wheel). Stability excellent and good teacher for control. It felt like a monster, and it was wide girth, and I was actually very scared of it, but it taught me everything about taking on more euc weight and controlling the ride in many different positions, most importantly, it introduced me to off-road. I then decided to add the Begode Master (20" Wheel) to the fleet for more speed- it's like I was in stability heaven, but that didn't last longer than a few months... burned mother board and suspension very weak, still out of order. I felt something was there in the master, so I pursued that hunch and bought the Master Pro (22" WHEEL) THE BEST WHEEL for Stability, and the my dreams came true, so I had to lessen time for off-roading and stairs, jumps etc... but POWER and stability was MET! Then I was introduced to the Extreme Bull PRO- (20" wheel) - WOW!!!!! Stability Extreme. The master pro and the extreme are two different rides< but I tend to agree with Hsiang; Wheel Size is not the secret sauce for stability and control, neither is weight, size of euc or pads. They do help tremendously(Especially Pads-haha), but the secret sauce is definitely becoming one with the wheel, and for that you just have to search for the right one that fits your comfort zone and thinking abilities. .

Stability, yup. My first wheel was 14". I kissed the asphalt about once every 3 weeks. I miss the agility, but I crash much less frequently. I don't think I want a 20" wheel. It lacks the maneuverability i crave.

Not just wheel size but weight. 18" V11 is great on roads but I often find myself missing the much lighter 16" V8 because it's easier to weave through pedestrians on the sidewalk and simply just more manageable when running errands.

Agree with this. I am a fan of smaller wheels generally but I will stick with my S18 rather than get the Patton because of the weight. I am not a heavy rider by average standards and the more top-heavy a wheel is, the harder I find it to control finely enough for my own riding tastes.

My first was the Inmotion V8s. Its actually my only wheel. It took me two weeks to learn but after that gradually week to week, month to month I learned so much. Had a crash sent it for repair and they sent it back to me 3 months later. It only took another month for the side panel to break and a second to pop the tire. I ripped two inner tubes trying to replace that thing which explains why it took them 3 months for them to get it back to me lol. I am looking forward to the V14 Adventure. I almost have enough saved and there's no way im buying a car right now.

Today I rode my V12HT 60km/h and few km later just 20km/h thru some offorad in the forest. I it so amazing how stable is that wheel in high speeds and how nimble it is in low speed. I love it and I have no need to switch to bigger wheel.

On my first wheel, I thought that I would love a more stable wheel, but I now know that there wasn't a stability problem with the wheel - it was the rider! My first wheel was 18", when I bought a 16" wheel, I thought it was a lot less stable, after a few hundred kms of riding - it is plenty stable enough. My Sherman S is relaxing to ride because I don't need to think as quickly to correct any instabilities, but I'm sure someone new to riding would initially have trouble with balance and stability.

I learned this lesson after getting my V12. Coming from an 18" wheel and hearing how larger diameter wheels were commonly considered "more stable" initially caused me to regret getting the V12 when I was not immediately comfortable riding it. However, after several months I can now say I love how my V12 rides and I no longer feel any difference in stability. That being said, I was able to jump on a Master and feel comfortable on it much more quickly. So I think there's still a stepper learning curve with smaller wheels for reaching that feeling of "oneness" with the wheel.

Super video really, as always Hsiang by the way.👍 I use 4 different wheels, my starting wheel was a KS 16 X and I will not part for anything in the world. Today, my wheels are all part of my body, whether it’s the EX.N, the RS 19, or the KS S18, I don’t know if they’re there, they’ve just become an extension of my legs. But the KS 16 X has unparalleled agility and responsiveness, the torque is immediate and even if the speed is lower the sensations are greater. I will say that weight is also part of the equation, for this I prefer to stay on "light" wheels because less they are present in terms of size and weight, the more quickly and completely your brain assimilates them to a part of your body, the more intuitive everything becomes. No other vehicle has ever brought me so much pleasure, that of the total freedom of movement without anything coming between my brain and the ground, like a magic flying carpet! 👍

Hi, what do you think is more important for the stability and no wobbling on high speed: the weight of the euc or the wheel size? For example I felt that kingsong 16s was much more wobbly and not confident on speed then 18xl, but it was also lighter in weight. I wonder if in case of heavy wheels it works the same and for example Lynx would hold the speed more comfortable and stable then V14?

No doubt jumping on the T4 after some high speed runs on the ex30, the smaller T4 feels wonky twitchy & wobbly. However it also feels so much nimbler agile & most of all, light & tossable. To me, the T4 is awesome on gnarly technical mtb single tracks (& subsequently slow high pedestrain traffic areas) while the much heavier but way faster (& much easier to go faster) ex30. I'm unsure what this vid is trying to say but for sure, I'd want a 16"er for pure offroad fun & a 18-20" for everything else. & yes, the 18" ex is much more stable at anything >40mph

I’ve read of almost no one complaining about starting their learning process on a smaller wheel, whereas there are tons of dumb-asses who oversize for the coolness/newness factor who end up bloodied and bruised from attempting to learn on larger performance models. I learned on a 300Watt wheel an have zero regrets, and I’m a better rider than I would have been had I skipped the lessons that an underpowered wheel has to teach. Thanks for doing it right! 🎉

Begode Master, Begode Master Pro and just received my EX30. They all have their moments where they are more adapted to do a specific type of riding. The smoothness of the Master Pro is really just amazing.... But like you said it's really not as zippy than my Master for example.

As a pretty new rider, less than 50 miles so far. I definitely disagree on smaller wheels being easier to learn on. When I was learning on my KS18XL, responsiveness had 0 impact on learning to ride as it was already set to soft mode by default. What took time was unlearning certain natural reactions, like trying to counter lean when starting to fall over instead of using my legs to pivot the wheel in that direction. The larger tire worked way better in the less even sidewalks and cracked school blacktop I was learning on. It took about 3.5 miles over 3 hours spread over three days to really have it click. First day was just fighting my bodies reactions and responses causing lots of step downs, plenty of riding slowly next to a chainlink fence basically using my hand to bounce off it and being glad I had shinguards to tank the pedal hits, was holding way too tight with my feet early on with my ankles resting on the EUC. The next time a couple days later I could actually go a couple houses before I started wobbling to much mostly because I was still holding to tight. But as long as I had something to hold on to get started and a person to lean on, I was able to figure out basic stuff, though still couldn't mount up without something to hold onto to get my feet positioned right. Third day I took it to an elementary school and was able to go straight next to the chainlink fence without any issues if I wasn't trying to turn and had no issues decelerating. Then I basically spent half an hour just riding back and fourth between basketball poles. But doing tight circles around the poles made the twist rather than lean at low speed turning click in my head. I ended up doing 22 miles of riding that day, which was yesterday at a nearby park on paved bike trails with no real wipeouts but a couple step offs where other people were on the path and it was tight. Though my legs are tired enough to take a day off now. I am keeping the pedal tiltback at 18mph, with alarm at 14mph while I am still getting the feel for it and muscle memory. Though I was learning on it with just a neoprene sleeve on it to keep it from getting too messed up while I was learning/repeatedly bailing. Looking forward to getting some of the foam Clark Pads for the extra leverage when breaking and accelerating. Learning with a naked EUC with no power pads definitely forces you to focus more on fundamentals since going fast takes alot out of the stabilizer muscles in your feet. Glad I padded up though, helped me think a lot less about getting hurt while learning to do a forward trust fall with a machine.

I know this video is already a year old, but something you probably should’ve added to it. If not the main reason, it is definitely a contributing factor why 16 and 18 inch wheels are the most popular is because they cost less to make….. then for a bigger wheel. Parts are smaller materials are less, etc. This also ties into shipping cost. It weighs less. Smaller product for a company makes logistics easier.

Hsiang. Thanks for this vid. All of the info is really good. I just recently purchased a Nikola 2700 as my fourth wheel. My original wheel was a Ninebot One Z10. It was really really hard to turn and prone to wobble which I hated and triggered me to sell the wheel. I thought these issues were mainly due to the width of the tire on the Z10. But now I have the exact same issues with the Nikola 2700. It turns out that smaller wheel diameters don't allow me enough leverage to turn at speed. I am far more agile and much faster on 18+ inch wheels. I already sold my v11f and now am looking to sell both my 18xl and Nikola 2700 to fund a purchase of a newer suspension wheel (v13, Master, s22 pro). I would really like to know if you experience the difficulty of turning at high speeds with 16" wheels?

It may be just a matter of needing more experience, it does take more skills to maintain control and stability at speed on at 16", especially if it doesn't have suspension. But pads is a easy way to add contact surfaces which may help (if you aren't padded up already) but no it should be easier and not harder to turn on a smaller wheel

@@OWGAC it might be experience on the smaller diameter wheels. But honestly I have thousands of miles on wheels in total. Probably just hundreds on smaller diameter wheels. I have grizzla pads that I interchange on my wheels. Commute 3-4 days per week here in the mountains of Utah and trail ride. I really feel like the issues might be physics. The 16" wheels just feel like I'm muscling them to turn. I am like 235 lbs though so that might be playing a factor. It might just be easier for me to turn larger wheels. Again, appreciate your content. I've watched since day 1.

But, the deposit on a new wheel will probably go in this weekend. I'm planning a 80 mile euc camp trip in the mountains of Utah and a suspension wheel would be amazing for that.

No amount of EUC design can make up for a nutritional deficiency of magnesium, which is essential for fine muscle control. Always check your nutrition first, before blaming the wheel, especially if your wobbles are symptoms of all wheels that you ride.

All else being equal same battery size, same motor size, same weight, same voltage, etc, it's been said that an18-inch wheel will get better range than a 16-inch wheel because it has to turn less times to reach the same distance. What do you think?

With everything else equal the total revolving mass of the motor+rim+tire is the main factor for the range. Obviously 18" would be heavier to power through its mileage.

Just stick with it! Even if you practice getting on and getting off in your living room. Practice 20 minutes every day. Wake up the next day and notice very minor improvements. You will be so proud of yourself! I've only been riding for five months and I'm already learning how to ride backwards. I am 58 and it took me a couple of months to be able to ride with confidence. And the work out factor goes down as it gets easier.

I used to think in a somewhat similar way to some of the comments in this video. I now understand that there is a lot more going on. Prior to suspension wheels coming out, all wheels were extremely similar. You got a bigger diameter wheel, you also got more weight but everything else grew a little as well. Everything was a similar ratio to the wheel size. Pedal height, pedal size, case size, weight of the machine and contact patch of the tire all grew in a relatively even ratios. You bought a Monster v1 through v3 and you had a big wheel that reacted fairly slowly and offered less agile, more stable ride experience. You bought an Mten 3 and you got a tiny little wheel the darted quickly in any direction that pointed it, RIGHT NOW!. Small wheels required much quicker and smaller inputs to remain stable. This fact is what brings me to offer complete disagreement with one of the statements made during this video, smaller wheels are easier to learn on. I found this to be completely inaccurate. The slower reacting, larger and more stable wheels are actually easier for some people to learn on as long as the wheel size and weight aren't too big for the individual learning. In other words, in my experience, small wheels for small people and big wheels for big people return the best learning results. Small wheels for large people and big wheels for small people make the learning curve extremely difficult to handle. This all brings me to the next evolution in EUC design, suspension. I moved from a Monster V2 to an EX20. The EX20 is actually a smaller tire size in diameter. However, this wheel is so much larger and heavier that is actually acts like it's a bigger tire size in relation to the non-suspension wheels. It can be very resistant to sharp turns and quick direction changes. In fact, going back to the Monster, it now feels very small and agile in comparison. One important thing to note is that the tire width is similar if not slightly larger. Ultimately, unless you are running a bit higher tire pressure, the tire contact patches are very much alike. What this brings me to is that there are multiple metrics at work when we discuss stability. Tire size is only one of the factors. Contact patch size which is a function of tire size, tire pressure and rider weight. Size and weight of the machine itself. Pedal height and machine width. All of these things work together to determine overall stability vs agility of a wheel.

i learned to ride euc on the inmotionv12 ht and hs. I'm looking for a good suspension wheel and thinking of getting the COMMANDER PRO 134V. any other suggestions? I like to hit small jumps and have fun cruising on and off road.

Great topic. I personally lean more to 16” wheels for the agility. I find myself able to adjust quickly to those "oh shit" moments and worst case emergency eject, since it is smaller height wise. I never find stability a issue, but like you said I’m acclimated to my wheel. V12 & Tesla V2.

A larger wheel requires more torque, but not more power to achieve the same performance as a smaller wheel (it will need more torque but less rpm to produce the same power). If riding in a straight line on a reasonably smooth surface, at sufficient speed an EUC is self-stable, self-correcting (due to camber effect of tire), eliminating the need for the rider to make any balance corrections (absent external forces like a gusting crosswind). At higher speeds, the self-correcting response may end up getting into an over-correcting cycle, resulting in wobbles. A less responsive tire, like a knobby tire or a more narrow tire, is less prone to wobbles. Angular inertia and momentum can dampen out a tendency to wobble. As for motorcycles, the same steering geometry that turns the front tire into direction of lean will also cause a bike to auto-lean into a gusting crosswind. The sideways force steers the front tire downwind from under the center of mass, leaning the bike into the wind. There's a limit to this, and a very strong crosswind will require additional rider input to prevent the bike from turning downwind.

Got the T4. So far I am happy with my wheel! 1st wheel. Over 400 miles so far. I'm in a small town with a lot of hills. Didn't need speakers. And any extra electronics to go bad. (Inmotion) the only think is it would be nice to ride others so I can compare. Dunno when I will get another wheel. Really looking at the mten 4. Just cause u can throw it in a shopping cart. U know!? Lol!😂 it's tough to justify spending money on a wheel seeing how all wheels seem like they won't last more than one season with out replacing something. That's not a perishable item. Whether it's screws that come loose overtime, or crappy bearings from the manufacturer. Or linkage that is crap. Maybe it would be more justifiable if the retailers would include a 1 time free mail back rebate for repairs with warranty. Expecting users to work on there wheel is a bit off putting. Like if my car goes down, I can take it to a mechanic. Not so much for euc. I feel like i have to find a local mechanic that will be willing to work on the wheel if possible. They prollybwont tho. BUT overall, you can't replace the enjoyment you get from euc even if there are a lot of stipulations to having a long running euc!

I can't talk for suspension wheels. But non-suspension wheels are the most maintenance friendly powered transporters ever. I have the V8f. A tire change is a bit of work, but it's not bad once you've done it a few times. That leaves only the bearings. They are low quality from the factory. Change them to a good brand(watch out for fakes) and I can't really think of much more things to maintain. Yes, the battery will degrade but the motor could run for ages. Bikes and scooters have much more moving parts to maintain. They need cleaning, adjusting etc etc. I've been through a lot of mud and sand with my V8f. If I would have done that with a mtb I'd be looking at many many hours of cleaning and maintenance. It's not even necessary to clean out the mud because once all the nooks are filled with mud it will stop collecting mud since there's simply no place for it anymore. Oh and since there are so little parts there is almost no metal that will eventually rust.

After some v5 (14x2.125") i ride v11 (18x3") and i'm _not_ longing for more nimbleness. In fact, I'd like a v11 with 20".. Or S22 if it was somewhat slimmer. And i only ride sidewalks.

Thank you for very interesting video with many interesting ideas. They are very useful for me now. I have Kingsong KS-14S as my first EUC. As recommended I have bought this beginners wheel and I just love it!!!!!! But after 1500 km I just know that I need faster one with suspension. Almost whole my ride I am more braking than enjoying the ride. I am already capable more than this small toy is offering and it is beeping during straight way but also during cornering or practising some tricks. So my dream was from the beginning and maybe still is the Kingsong KS-S22. And if I am able, I would buy it this year and start to fly little faster and safer with the suspension. When the moment comes I check the offer of EUC's, but for sure something like this will be my next choice.

I suppose they keep them small to maintain wheel speed mind you the best off road motorcycles use 21 inch or 22 inch front tires the bigger the wheel the easier they keep rolling over obstacles in your path it would be great if they also utilize a 4.5 inch or 5 inch Fat tire unicycle to increase suspension softness

I love your take on this and think you are 100% correct. There is a reason seasoned EUC riders think the Mten3/4 is a terrible wheel to learn on. To them the very small diameter wheel feels unstable and sketchy. I have always felt that Mten is the perfect beginner wheel because it has such a low center of gravity and pedal height. My first EUC was an Mten3 and I ride an Mten4 almost every day. My main wheel is a Sherman S and while I do feel it is more comfortable I do not really notice a difference in stability because I ride them both so often.

Rim is 12inch, tire ranges from 16-18inch on the ‘16inch wheel class’ 20inch wheel class is 14inch rim. I think everyone should move to rim size…

Interesting video. You forgot one main thing . Try an emergency stop with a 100 lbs 22’’ vs an 70 lbs 18’’ wheel. Even your brain is alert , speed with more weight , results more inertia . That’s why heavy machines are way too dangerous for me

I don't fully agree. Feel is not everything. Despite the fact that you can adapt to a certain extent to a geometry and learn the behaviour, physics still exists... Systems stability is an objective concept that can be discribed with numerical values.

That would depend on which tire is installed. Some tires ala streets are much closer to the 16/18 while others ala knobbies are almost 2" wider. For standardization sake, its best to use 1 specific size for differenciation. IMO ofcos

My first real unicycle!(first one was a cheap plastic one as a kid kzbin.infoUgkx4e2fa6x27dF7shCelntq0ZIKt4N0jELI I never learned to ride)So, this is a true learner, and for a C note, exactly what was needed. After a few weeks, I'm able to easily ride up and down the street. The Good: Solid frame. Has absorbed numerous spills through learning and still solid. Look - great looks, after 6 weeks of bashing Weight - it's really all tire, but as I fall I can easily grab the seat so it doesn't slam the ground. Size - Very adjustable. I'm 6', 33" inseam. I put it mostly up, but could go a bit higher if I needed to. The Bad: Not sure if it's out of the norm, but seat got scraped up quickly. Pedals - they are a bit uncomfortable and I can't get the right feel on my feet. But, they are solid and haven't been damaged at all as I've seen in reviews on other cycle's.- To address one comment about the seat connection not straight. Huh? Seat is on a round pole, you just turn it and it's straight. Either of the bad I expected to replace once I improved. I'd recommend to anyone else in the learning phase.
