On a trip last year from Montana to Mendocino, I was shocked by the nightly room prices of most of the motels. At nearly 70 years old now though, I find the comforts of a decent bed and a shower are more important than they used to be. That said, I am in the planning stages of a ride/camp trip for next year and hope to get to some places that I've long wanted to see and experience. I don't know about Ohio, but one consideration for me (and my hunter friends chide me on this) are the four-legged critters out here in the Northwestern states, specifically bears. Until I rode to Alaska in 2017, I had never seen a bear in the wild. On that trip, and in spite of the fact that I had every bit of camping kit imaginable, we never camped once. I would say however, if one is going to remote or sparsely populated areas, it's a good idea to be prepared. With respect to the social and political environment, I would agree that it is almost a necessity to "unplug" from time to time and get out for a connection with Mother Nature. The political $hit show is only going to get worse, so let's enjoy our two wheels and get out there and ride! I tried (and I think successfully) to get out more this year than in previous years. I've chronicled most of it on my KZbin channel as well. Fuzzy side up... Rubber side down!
@charmontravelАй бұрын
Probably just more RV campers! Wouldn't it be cool if more campgrounds let you ride to walk-to-sites or had designated spots for motorcycle campers? In NE Ohio and NW PA, these state campgrounds are straight-up parking lots! It's like tailgating for a the big game, except there's no game. I guess you could play pin the tail on the toy dog, trip over bicycles in the dark or count the gennies at 2AM. Fifty bucks a night to stay at a trailer park is hard for me.

I already have my first moto-camping trip planned for 2025 in SW Texas. To Jess's point though.... I challenge anyone driving on an interstate at night pull into a Rest Stop. They are filled with people sleeping in their cars and trucks.. why? Because as Jess stated, the cost of a hotel/motel has exploded. And I confess, I've even been on my motorcycle and pulled into a rest stop and just thrown my sleeping bag on a picnic table... So yup, Jess has got this prediction nailed. It is a bit primitive but fun. And I'm 73, hardly a kid. But moto camping is as good as it gets.
@Jaysonic3423Ай бұрын
All my long distance trips have been rest stop sleepovers. No issues at all. I only sleep 4 hrs a night, so, I don't see the need to pay for a hotel/motel room just for 4 hrs of sleep.

I camped from a 4x4 truck/Bronco/Jeep for 50 years starting with my parents. By far the biggest reason I've transitioned to bike camping and traveling is fuel costs. I currently have a 99TJ on 35s, locker, winch etc. It can go way farther off road than I can on my ADV, but! My Jeep is now over 40 cents per km, my V-Strom fully loaded is 11 cents /km in Canada, and 6 cents /km on my trip through New York. My last trip was ~2500kms, around $150 on my bike, it would have been over $1,000 in my Jeep. It would have been warmer, and I wouldn't have lost the 3 hours I did waiting for the roads to thaw one morning, but 3 hours and some comfort isn't worth $850.

I completely agree. We would normally do a 2 week ride every year and stay in hotels. But at an average of around a $100 a night, it gets expensive real quick. So we purchased a small motorcycle camper called a Minimate. So on a 2 week trip, we save at. least a $1,000 in lodging. 5 trips and the camper pays for itself. We usually stay in state parks with electric and water at around $35-$45 a night. Only takes around 3 minutes to set up and we are out of the elements. Another plus, is we get much more storage space inside the camper. Win win!

Two sleeping bags, air mattress, dome tent etc. Little things like a towel and toiletries if you want to get crazy and take a shower, plus change of clothes. No room for a cooler, and having to run to a store for food or a restaurant to eat. Now my idea of roughing it would be Motel 6.

So I bought a a 2003 BMW F650CS with cash. A simple bike that checked my boxes of fuel injection, ABS, and belt drive (no chain to maintain). I know I have been wanting to do more of this, just would like to have a different moto to do it on. Currently both my motos are not really the best for long haul trips. I did do a 5200 mile trip from chicago to sanfran to la back to chicago on the V-rod muscle, however it was not the best... no windshield, cheap onesize fits all saddle bags, no 6th gear, and found out what I don't like about the seat LOL.. and the new moto is an RC51 - definitely not meant for long haul tips. So hoping to get an ADV style moto in a year or so and then take my 2 week vacations on the road. keep up the fun vids and then maybe I will see ya out an about while traveling. cheers.

Right about camping getting more expensive. Also getting harder. Pulling up to a site and putting money in an envelope is quickly being replaced with having to “reserve and pay” online and in advance, or having to deal with things like 2 night minimum stays (South Carolina, looking at you!)
@STho205Ай бұрын
Yep... If they aren't going to pick up the money, do they really need it. The USFS has outsourced trash pickup and toilet clean at several remote grounds and rangers never appear. So you stay a night...and can't pay less than 2 days, so the price has doubled for moto campers that move daily. You also can't reserve at many sites that are located in dead zones...but want to use an app instead of the drop box. Find free dispersed sites, bring water or a filter and a trowel. Most of my camping now is dispersed spots.

Its about $70 after fees, but its fantastic!

I live in AZ and moto-camp in AZ, UT, WY, NV, CO. I like to stay in a hotel about half way through a 7 day trip, just to shower. But you can always stop at a Pilot or Flying J truck stop and pay for shower. As many have responded, hotel prices are through the roof. Even what has been considered low end chain hotels in America, that a few years ago could get for $75-100/n, they now run $100-150/n, depending location and season.
@HerTwoWheelsАй бұрын

In the 90s and 00s, motels were $35 to $60 plus 11% tax so 40 to 65. That is pretty much long gone. Grungy motels are now $100..and good chains are 150. That shoots the whole purpose of motor touring in nature. Camping minimalist is best. Pop tent and pocket stove can be bought for less than one night in a sketchy motel. As it is now, I keep a clip and clamp tent and air mattress in my car when I travel. If I need to just sleep 6 hrs...I ain't paying $99+tax to bug out at dawn. There are a lot of dispersed FREE campsites if you desire. There's an app to locate them. Eastern USFS and TVA offer tent camping at about 10 to 15 a night (water and toilet only)...however many of these sites have gone to online reservation only and minimum 2 day 1st stay. Fun when you arrive at a site with no cell service for miles that requires an app and venmo.

Been bike camping for 50 years. Started for economic reasons as even in 1970 £20 a week wages didn't go far . Ended preferring the freedom as hotel to hotel is just a journey from point a to b with zero real exploring So, I learned bush craft and did survival courses. Done the big criuser and sports bike thing along with Trials riding for a few years. Now I'm retired and bought a 350 Royal Enfield classic. Only ever owned one bike at a time. One on each foot just never worked for me.😂 Journey time doesn't bother me, so it's all back road wandering Nothing beats waking up in a tent, having breakfast, and listening to the world . The difference is that it's all solo only . It's probably a crowded UK thing on my part Always hated group ride outs and mass gatherings of camshaft comparing boozers. Book, music, or listening to the sea or birds is the only company I need. Happy camp riding guys. One thing. Dont over spend on camp gear 3000HH waterproofing is enough on any tent for a 3 season tent

Awfully heavy for the low power on gravel. The Himalayan is probably a best fit in that RE budget line. I do go into deep woods campsites with a vintage CB250 but it weighs under 300lbs and has about the same motor power as the India 350 single. You can do it on a RE350, but the gravel should be hard packed with few washouts or creek crossings as you'll be submerging a hot motor.
